The all-new 2013 Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid has already sold out in Europe, making the Volvo hybrid one of the brand’s most popular new car launches ever. It is the world’s first production diesel plug-in hybrid car, and Volvo’s first production hybrid. Volvo has been working on various hybrid and electric vehicle designs, but they were skittish about launching them. Maybe now they’ll change their mind!
Volvo kept citing a lack of demand, but they finally decided to release the V60 plug-in hybrid, and it ended up as one of three nominees for the 2013 Green Car of the Year, which the Tesla Model S won. But even being nominated is a worthy accomplishment.
The 2013 Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid is sold in Europe for $74,000. It can travel 31 miles per charge using only electricity. It is equipped with a 212 HP, 2.4 litre diesel engine, which is assisted by a 69 HP electric motor. The diesel engine turns the front wheels, and the electric motor turns the rear wheels. It can accelerate from zerto to sixty MPH (0 to almost 100 km/h) in 5.8 seconds.
The Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid has a top speed of 143 MPH, while the top speed in electric mode is 78 MPH .The battery pack is 11.2 kWh, but only 8 kWh is used; this practice extends the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. While it has a curb weight of over 4,400 pounds, the Volvo V60 still achieves a fuel efficiency rating of 130 MPG (1.8 liters per 100 kilometers) on the European NEDC test cycle.
