Though the car never really made Tesla Motors any money, the Tesla Roadster helped establish the EV maker as a serious contender to the established auto industry. While the next-generation Tesla Roadster won’t debut for some time, Tesla execs say that the Model R, as it will likely be called, is going to “push the envelope beyond what anyone else is doing.”
That is Tesla’s George Blankenship, Vice President of Sales and Ownership Experience talking to Britain’s AutoCar magazine. The goal for the next Tesla Roadster is to exceed the impressive performance of the original car, which went out of production in 2011. The Tesla Roadster had a 200+ mile driving range per charge, and could go from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Blankenship says that the Model R will meet or exceed those numbers,
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has already said that an all-electric supercar could be in the works, but only after the automaker has established at least a three-model lineup. The Tesla Model S is already selling well, though production of the Model X SUV has been delayed so the company can focus on Model S production.
After the Model X, Musk has talked about a BMW 3-series contender, which would make it about half the price of the Model S, which starts at $62,500 before tax credits. Personally, I’d rather they make the next Roadster model more affordable than faster. Know what I am saying?
