The Volkswagen Golf is one of the most popular cars in the world, and the most likely candidate to lead Vdub’s charge into the field of electric vehicles. Ahead of the L.A. Auto Show, Volkswagen has released more images and info on the upcoming 2015 Volkswagen E-Golf, including a standard on-board fast charger that can deliver an 80% charge in as little as 30 minutes.
Here in America the Volkswagen E-Golf will compete with the likes of the Chevy Spark EV, the Ford Focus Electric, and of course the Nissan Leaf. Expect pricing to be in the same $25,000 to $30,000 range, and a 24.2 kWh battery developed in-house by Volkswagen will deliver between 70 and 90 miles of driving range in the real world, a lot less than Volkswagen’s other concept can get on a single tank of gas.
So far pretty par for course, right? But where Volkswagen hopes the E-Golf will stand out is the standard on-board fast charging unit, using the new Combined Charging Standard (CCS) plug backed by the SAE. While there are few stations currently available, it is the charging standard most likely to take hold in North America thanks to the backing of most American and European carmakers.
The Volkswagen E-Golf will be fitted with LED lights standard, and come with three driving modes depending on how frugal you want to be with your battery life. The E-Golf also gets a few special aerodynamic features, like a different roof spoiler and air vanes, as well as a flat underbody panel to reduce drag. Details on pricing and official range ratings closer to its spring 2014 release.
