Electric Domination: Nissan Leaf sales hit 1,708, Chevy Volt at 561 in June
In the battle for plug-in vehicle sales supremacy, the electric-only Nissan Leaf has emerged on top for the month of June, beating the Chevrolet Volt for three consecutive months (April, May and June).
Nissan is proud to make known that it sold 1,708 Leafs in the U.S. in June, a sizable increase over the 1,142 electric hatchbacks the Japanese automaker sold in May and nearly three times the 573 Leafs sold in April. Overall, 2011 sales of the Leaf now total 3,875 in the U.S., compared to 2,745 Chevy Volts.
On the flip side, General Motors has announced that U.S. sales of the plug-in hybrid Volt rang in at 561 in June. If you recall, back in early March, GM told us that a decline in Volt sales was imminent due to the automaker shipping some 300 Volts to dealers to use as demo vehicles. That's why Volt sales slipped from 608 in March to 493 in April. This time 'round – despite extensive retooling at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant – sales of the Volt in June increased by 80 units, compared to the 481 The General sold in May.
Notice a trend? Will the Leaf retain its spot as the U.S.' best-selling plug-in vehicle for the month of July? Or will it be the Volt that rises back to the top? We reckon that, come this time next month, the Leaf will still reign supreme. What's your guess?
