The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is EPA rated at 47 miles per gallon, and has been on sale since October of 2013- but the Americans who want to buy them are having trouble finding them. In fact, over the first 10 months since its release, Honda has sold a mere 979 Accord Hybrids – out of 366,678 Accords of all models sold in 2013. To put that into perspective, the Accord Hybrid was outsold almost eight-to-one by the 7,719 Civic Hybrids delivered, of a total of 336,180 Civics.
What gives?
With an MPG rating that rivals smaller hybrids like the Toyota Prius, a starting price tag around $30,000, fun to drive handling characteristics, and being a four door mid-sized sedan, the Accord offers plenty of attractive features. Plus, it’s a Honda, so you can expect it to drive forever.
So, where’s the car? Honda claims that the company has suffered “component supply constraints” on the Made-in-the-USA Honda Accord Hybrids. Which, basically, means that they don’t have enough of the needed parts to meet US demand- a good problem to have!
There’s also been speculation that a version of the US-market Honda Accord Hybrid is being targeted at Japan, due to the heavy gov’t incentives offered to companies that are providing green options in Japan.
