Mercedes AMG, Cigarette Racing Build Most Powerful Electric Boat Ever

“The Best or Nothing” is a bold slogan, one only a brand like Mercedes-Benz can pull off. The Germans are constantly striving to out-engineer the competition, resulting in cutting edge technology and cars that constantly push the envelope of what’s possible. In-house tuning division AMG produces some of the fastest and most-expensive performance cars in the world, including an all-electric version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS supercar. Apparently AMG has a thing for boats as well, teaming up with Cigarette Racing to build the world’s most powerful pure-electric boat.
It’s a match that makes a lot of sense, as anybody wealthy enough to afford the $570,000 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive can probably afford cigarette boat as well. AMG’s partnership with Cigarette Racing gave birth to a 2,200 horsepower pure-electric race boat called the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept. The Germans could use a bit more creativity when it comes to names, but with designs like this, who are we to argue?
The electric race boat has a pair of motors, each producing about 1,100 horsepower. The motors produce a combined peak output of 2,212 ft-lbs of torque as well. That’s about three times as much power as the SLS AMG Electric Drive makes on the road. You’d think with that kind of power the boat would be able to go faster than 99 mph, but alas, it cannot. Charging the lithium-ion batteries (borrowed from an AMG SLS Electric Drive) takes between three and seven hours, depending on how many of the four on-board chargers are used.
Is there a future for EV boats? Perhaps, though Mercedes fails to mention how long a charge is good for…probably because this electric boat can only last an hour or so at most, even with its big battery pack. Still, the concept is cool, and Mercedes remains on the cutting edge of EV performance technology…for now.
