Here is a cool curiosity, a prototype of three-wheeler introduced by VW in 1986. Powered by a 90hp 1.4l engine it was able to reach 220kph, with a weight of only 635kg and a drag coefficient of 0.25, the VW Scooter which could accommodate two people was efficient before the era of microcars.
Since then, VW introduced evolution of this concept with new technologies such as the XL1 and more recently the concept NILS, but the Scooter from 1986 is the pioneer, then let’s have a closer look to this collector.
The headlights, though a little aged now, recall the design of the brand’s last concepts, mostly the XL1 while the K2000 rear lights (or second series of the Pontiac Trans Am 1982-1992 for the amateurs) dive us into the eighties.
Totally futuristic, the VW Scooter surprised in its time and still intrigues today with butterfly doors and sports car height (1.22m).
As wide as a Smart with 1.5m and 20cm longer than a Toyota iQ with (3.17m) the concept Scooter was designed to sneak into town and even features a trunk that could welcome a suitcase.
HP Baxxter German Star of the group Scooter accepted to participate in a photo for a meeting of the Third Kind...
The 1986 VW Scooter is now exhibited in the VW Museum in Wolfsburg
More recently the name of scooter was reused in a more appropriate model, the e-Scooter, presented earlier this year at the Shanghai Motor Show, a prototype that will soon lead to a production model with a particular use in "scooter-sharing" schemes in China.
