Latest Sales Results For Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt

In the battle for plug-in vehicle U.S. sales supremacy, the electric-only Nissan Leaf has emerged the victor once again, beating the Chevrolet Volt for the sixth consecutive month (April, May, June, July, August and now September). Its half-year reign as the plug-in champ has jolted the Leaf well ahead of the Volt in total U.S. sales.

Nissan
says it sold 1,031 Leafs in the U.S. in September 2011. That's a minor improvement over the 931 Leafs sold in July, but the Japanese automaker's 1,708 electric hatchbacks sold in June still stands as the high-water mark, with the 1,362 Leafs sold in August coming in second. Overall, 2011 sales of the Leaf now stand at 7,199 units in the U.S., compared to 3,895 units for the Chevy Volt. Your eyes haven't deceived you: Year-to-date Leaf sales still stand at nearly double the Volt's sold-in-2011 mark.

For the first time in a while, Volt sales are on an upward trend. General Motors announced that U.S. sales of the Chevy Volt rang in at 723 units in September. That's more than double the 302 Volts The General reported selling in August and a massive improvement over the meager 125 Volts GM sold in July.

Now, it's time for our usual monthly question: Will the Leaf retain its position as the U.S.' top-selling plug-in vehicle? Or will the Volt rise to the occasion and grab the number one spot in October? With the battle for plug-in supremacy getting tighter, next month could mark the first time since March of 2011 that the Volt outsells the Leaf. What do you think?
