Acura NSX Type-R In The Works?

The new Acura NSX was just revealed at the Detroit auto show last month, but already there is talk of a more powerful Type-R variant in the works.
The new car is an advanced hybrid featuring three electric motors — one for each of the front wheels and one boosting power from the twin turbo V-6 gasoline engine to the rear wheels. Acura says the electric motors give the car “zero-delay launch performance,” aided by quick-shifts from the 9-speed dual clutch transmission.
“The NSX delivers pinnacle supercar performance, with zero-delay acceleration and exhilarating, confidence-inspiring driving dynamics,” Ted Klaus, chief engineer and global development leader of the new NSX told the UK’s AutoExpress. Asked about the rumored Acura NSX Type R, Klaus said, “The Type R offers drivers what no other manufacturer can: the nimble performance capabilities, look and feel of a hand-crafted racer available in a ready-to-drive package.”
Klaus says that too much is never enough for Acura and its customers. “I think everyone who loves cars wants to see a version that we say is pure red,” said Klaus. “The NSX has always been silver first, moving towards red later. Someone asked me, ‘when will you be satisfied?’ Probably never. What you do today, you can improve on tomorrow.”
Tomorrow, in this case, may be somewhat in the future. The standard NSX, which will offer supercar performance in its own right, goes on sale later this year as a 2016 model. It is typical for higher performance models to follow about a year after the introduction of the regular spec car. In other words, a NSX Type-R might not be too far away after all.
