All-New 2014 Toyota Corolla Aims for 40 MPG

Despite being one of the oldest models for sale today, the Toyota Corolla remains a perrenial favorite among new car buyers. Even if Toyota didn’t update the Corolla for another five years, people would keep buying them out of habit. Thankfully, Toyota has just dropped an all-new Corolla for the 2014 model year, with an Eco version aiming to hit 40 mpg highway.
The 2014 Toyota Corolla sports a new exterior look, stepped-up interior quality, and an all-new 1.8 liter all-aluminum 132 horsepower four-cylinder engine backed by an automatic CVT transmission ( a first for the Corolla).Toyota is aiming to keep the Corolla on top of the compact car market. But to do so, they’ve had to step up their game, especially with fuel economy.
40 mpg is the new standard for compacts, and to help the Corolla achieve that, the LE Eco model will utilize Valvetronic, a North American-first that allows for variable valve timing and lift. The CVT transmission also gets an Eco driving mode that allows for smoother acceleration to improve fuel economy as well. Toyota is expecting a 40 mpg rating…and they had better hope they can get it.
Cars like the Ford Focus SFE and the Chevy Cruze Eco, already offer 40 mpg or more to drivers, and the Corolla risks falling behind if it can’t hit that magic number. But Toyota always finds a way, and the new Corolla is sure to do just fine once it hits dealerships.
