At the 24 Hours of LeMans races, there are various different types of prototype vehicles, including diesel and hybrid-electric ones. The Le Mans-winning Audi R18 e-tron Quattro is shown here during testing at the Monza race track, reaching speeds of up to 210 mph! It exhibits a highly unique sound resembling that of a jet engine and uses a KERS hybrid system to beat out the competition. It is also loud (for those which enjoy that).
Hybrids, and any propulsion systems that are even partially electrified still have a reputation for not being terribly fast, but many motorsports, including Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship, now utilize hybrid systems to provide bursts of speed. This technology is making it into road cars like thePorsche 918 Spyder as well. The Audi R18 e-tron Quattro is also serving as inspiration for a turbidiesel hybrid supercar from Audi itself.
This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans race will be held on the 22nd and 23rd of June, and Audi will be back to defending its long-standing title against competitors like Toyota. There will also be other altnerative fuel rides at this year’s Le Mans race, including the hydrogen powered Green GT and the pint-sized DeltaWing. But will they be able to keep up with the 340 kph/210 mph Audi?
Who knows. For now, let’s gawk at this gorgeous Audi race car as it makes going green look and sound like so much fun.
