BYD e6 EV will be sold in the US only to fleet buyers

It looks like those long curious to ride in a BYD battery-electric car in the US will only be able to do so from the back of a cab. The China-based company, which has for years been trumpeting a potential entry into the US light-vehicle market with the all-electric e6 sedan, will only sell the EV here to fleet buyers, Green Car Reports says. That means no private EV sales to Americans, at least for now.

The company, whose share price has dropped about 75 percent during the past three years because of lower-than-expected sales, said last month that it may eventually stop making gas-powered cars and limit light-duty vehicle production to just hybrids and plug-ins. BYD, which also makes an all-electric bus, moved about 1,700 plug-in vehicles last year. Since December, the company has reached municipal and taxi-cab sales agreements with its hometown of Shenzhen as well as with Bogota, Colombia.
