Chevy Volt continues to lead plug-in sales in US in July

The Chevrolet Volt led US plug-in vehicle sales among the largest automakers again in July, posting 1,849 units, up from 125 units in July 2011. So far this calendar year, GM has sold 10,666 units of the Volt, up from the 2,870 units sold during the same period of 2011.

Toyota came in second place for plug-in sales in July, with 688 Prius plug-ins sold (representing 4.1% of the 16,643 Prius family vehicles sold in the month. Toyota has now sold 5,035 PHEVs so far this year (3.5% of the 143,297 Prius family vehicles sold so far this year).

Nissan sold 395 units of the LEAF in July 2012, down 57.6% from July 2011’s 931 units. Year to date, Nissan has sold 3,543 LEAFs, down 26.3% from the 4,806 units sold during the same period in 2011.

Ford sold 38 units of the Focus Electric in July, a 57% drop from the 89 units sold in June. Ford has sold 135 units of the EV so far this calendar year, with total of 143 sold since introduction.

Honda, which just began sales of the Fit EV, sold 7 units in July.
