The future of the automobile Mirai has arrived in Europe.
On August 8 in Bristol, UK and August 10 in Zeebrugge, Belgium,Toyota unloaded first batch of Mirai, the world’s first “mass produced” hydrogen fuel cell sedan.
First 5 cars (3 in UK) is roughly 10% of the total planned deliveries for Europe this year. In 2016, Toyota intends to double the pace by delivering 100 Mirai in Europe.
If the world some day turns to hydrogen fuel cell cars, then this first delivery date could be more important than the date of first deliveries of the hybrid Toyota Prius in Europe 15 years ago. But will the world ever turn to hydrogen?
“Prius means “to go before” – a precursor to a new era of electrified mobility. Today, the first production Toyota Mirai – meaning “the future” in Japanese – destined for the European market has arrived, and, like its elder, it is here to pioneer the next step in clean mobility, using hydrogen as fuel and emitting nothing but water vapour.”
Other markets where Mirai will be available from September in Europe are Germany and Denmark. Price is €66,000 + VAT (Germany). At 19% VAT in Germany, we get a final price of €78,540 ($87,000). For that kind of money, you can get entry levelTesla Model S 70 or even 70D.

EPA rates Toyota Mirai at 67 mpge with 312-mile range


The EPA certified the 2016 Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell sedan with a 312-mile driving range and 67 miles per gallon equivalent fuel economy both in the city and on the highway. Toyota has been clear for some time that it expected the Mirai to go at least 300 miles, but the Japanese automaker has remained more tight-lipped on the four-door's hydrogen economyOur earlier estimate of 60 mpge was low, but in the ballpark.

"Just as the Prius introduced hybrid-electric vehicles to millions of customers nearly 20 years ago, the Mirai is now poised to usher in a new era of efficient, hydrogen transportation," Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz said during the EPA figures' announcement at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado. The company touts the 312-mile range as the longest driving distance of any zero-emissions model currently in the US. It bests the Hyundai Tucson fuel cell's numbers of around 265 miles and 49-mpge city/50-mpge highway fuel economy. The Mirai also surpasses the 270 miles from the Model S 85D.

Toyota is also going into deeper detail about some of the perks of owning a Mirai. They come with three years or $15,000 of complimentary hydrogen and the company's Entune system with a refueling station finder. There's also no-cost scheduled maintenance for the initial three years or 35,000 miles and an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty on the fuel cell components. The hydrogen sedan goes on sale in California in October for $57,500 before incentives or $499 a month to lease one for 36 months, with $3,649 due at signing. An eventual launch in the Northeast is also planned for later.

The new Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle will offer an EPA-estimated 67 miles per gallon equivalent (mpge) city/highway/combined when it hits dealerships in California this fall, and an EPA-estimated driving range rating of 312 miles on a single fill of hydrogen.

Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz announced the EPA-estimated performance figures at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colorado. Mirai is the only zero emission electric vehicle on the market that tops the 300 mile range milestone.

"Toyota realized in the early 90's that electrification was key to the future of the automobile," said Lentz. "Just as the Prius introduced hybrid-electric vehicles to millions of customers nearly twenty years ago, the Mirai is now poised to usher in a new era of efficient, hydrogen transportation."

The world's first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, the Toyota Mirai is a four-door, mid-size sedan with performance that fully competes with traditional internal combustion engines – but uses no gasoline. Instead, Mirai creates electricity on demand using hydrogen, oxygen and a fuel cell, and emits nothing but water vapor in the process.

2015 Toyota Mirai review

The Mirai is Toyota's first stab at a UK production hydrogen fuel cell-powered car. What's it like to drive and does it make sense?


What is it?: 

There’s no doubt that the Mirai (Japanese for ‘future’) is as eye-opening in real life as it appears in photographs. The root of this extraordinary look lies in the two large (but very functional) nose-mounted air intakes which feed its fuel cell stack with oxygen.
This styling logic feeds through to the rear of the car where the front intakes are echoed by huge rear light clusters, which look like they might be extractors but aren’t.
The extended rear wheel arches, it seems, are meant to tie in with the huge frontal air intakes, relaying a sense of the air being sucked in and nothing but water being ejected from the tailpipe.
Whichever way you look at it, the Mirai doesn’t have the easy-on-the-eye futurism of Honda's hydrogen-powered FCX. The technology contained beneath, however, is no less impressive, but with its arrival on UK roads imminent, does the Mirai feel as though it'll fit in?

What's it like?: 

The interior is rather less extreme and in keeping with what you might expect from a hydrogen-powered car. The surface quality of the plastics seems higher than that which you'll find in the Prius and the large central touchscreen feels right when you're seated in the car, even if it looks odd in photographs.
Under the unusual skin, the Mirai has an equally unusual layout. It’s a pretty big car (4.9m long and 1.82m wide) and is fairly typical in that it is front-wheel drive with MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbone suspension at the rear. However, that’s where the similarities with conventional cars end.
In the engine bay is the electric motor, mounted transversely, with the power control unit sitting on top of it. Toyota's new, compact Fuel Cell Stack sits under the front seats and the fuel cell booster is attached to its forward end, effectively sitting between the front seats.
The Fuel Cell Stack is a matter of great pride for Toyota engineers. Compared with the company’s previous attempt from 2008, the new unit is claimed to have more than double the specific output (1.4kW/L compared to 3.1kW/L) and is a fraction over 50 per cent lighter.
It uses an all-new ‘3D mesh’ cell design, which, in simple terms, clears the waste water away from its surface, in turn improving the the flow of oxygen to the catalyst layer. The stack can also start in temperatures as low as -30deg C and is said to have the same lifespan as that of a conventional internal combustion engine.
There are two hydrogen tanks, one mounted under the front seat and the other behind the rear seat. The nickel-metal hydride battery pack sits on top of the second tank. Underneath, the car has a full-length undertray, something that’s possible because there’s no hot engine or exhaust pipe to deal with.
When you look at a cutaway picture of the Mirai, it's clear that an awful lot of tech has been packaged within what is otherwise a pretty conventional structure. However, although the rear overhang isn’t ridiculously long, the boot space is more than a token effort.
As you might expect with an electric car, there’s not much more to do than press the start button, push the short gear lever into drive and hum away.
For a keen driver that is the problem with many of the new breed of electrically driven cars. Unsurprisingly, they all have a similar character.
They all have very smooth and almost silent drivetrains, a substantial chunk of torque from standstill and pretty brisk acceleration up to the 50-60mph mark. It’s not that these cars are characterless, more that they are all surprisingly similar to pilot.
The Mirai is no different. On the brief drive we had in a production version of the car, it was everything mentioned above. It did, perhaps, feel its weight a little (the torque and power figures are on the low side for a car weighing over 1.8 tonnes), but it felt well pinned down and rode well on Japanese roads.
The low-down weight (the Mirai is well-balanced front-to-rear) does give the car a little bit more agility than you might expect and it is keen to respond to inputs at the wheel.

Should I buy one?: 

Taken as a large, front-wheel-drive, saloon the Mirai would be nothing more than competent. But this is a huge technological achievement. It's a practical, useable series-production hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle.
The Mirai reaches Europe this September and first year production has already been hiked from 400 to 700 units, with Toyota expecting to sell 3000 in 2017. It's a small start for the long-promised hydrogen revolution, but the energy density of the gas and ability to refuel at quickly means this technology has much going for it.

Toyota Mirai Hydrogen FCV Gets Official Introduction By CEO


Ahead of its official launch at the Los Angeles Auto Show, CEO Akio Toyoda has officially introducedthe Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle as the car that will change the way we think about transportation. Toyota has bet big on hydrogen over electric vehicles; is the Mirai the car that can change the way we think about green transportation?
With 300 miles of driving range on a full tank of hydrogen fuel, the Toyota Mirai will purportedly offer all the advantages of electric cars, like instant torque and quiet driving, without the limited range or long recharge times. Just how green turning natural gas or other fossil fuels into compressed hydrogen remains a subject of debate, but in an ideal world hydrogen could be produced en masse from a wide variety of renewable sources, whether that be solar power or decaying garbage.
In Japanese, Mirai means “future”, which is what Toyota thinks hydrogen fuel represents. This is every bit as big as a gambit as Nissan’s focus on electric vehicles. The Toyota Mirai will wear rally colors in a bid to prove its reliable and fun to drive, and Toyota is planning to fund a new hydrogen highway in the Northeast to facilitate sales outside of SoCal. Toyota will work with Air Liqude to build the first stations in five Northeast states, forming the basis for a network that it hopes will stretch up and down the East Coast.
The first Toyota Mirai FCVs are slated to go into production next month, though the Hyundai Tuscon Fuel Cell has been available for lease since late summer. On the other hand, the Honda FCV has been delayed until 2016 for unspecified reasons. While that might seem to give Toyota the upper hand, Toyota is facing what some analysts call the “first-mover disadvantage” due to the lack of supporting infrastructure and the high cost of their cars.
Is the world ready for Toyota’s vision of a zero-emissions future? Is hydrogen ready for the world? We’ll find out in 2015.

Toyota FCV to Compete in Japanese Rally Championship

The upcoming hydrogen fuel-cell powered Toyota FCV is almost ready for prime-time, and, while Toyota believes it’s ready for public consumption, they’ve decided to prove the point by entering the car in he Japanese Rally Championship. (!)
Details are scarce, but it seems clear that the standard Toyota FCV (Toyota Mirai?) chassis will be used, upgraded with blue, silver and black graphics, mud flaps, and lightweight alloy wheels at the very least. Roll cage, fire suppression, beefier suspension components, and brake upgrades are also expected, but it’s not entirely certain that Toyota will fiddle with the standard production FCV power unit.
We’ll know soon enough, however. The Shinshiro Rally kicks off tomorrow, November 1st. If the Toyota FCV rally racer hits 60 MPH in less than 10 seconds, we’ll know it’s been upgraded. It should be a fantastic durability and performance test for hydrogen fuel cell cars!

Toyota: Hydrogen Fuel Will Be Costly

Toyota is one of the most outspoken proponents of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, even ditching its partnership with Tesla Motors to focus on the Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. But even with generous incentives, fueling hydrogen fuel cell vehicles won’t be cheap, with a full tank of the clean-burning fuel costing around $50, reports Ecomento.
That’s what Toyota’s Senior VP of North America Bob Carter said at the recent JP Morgan Auto Conference, claiming that cost estimate comes directly from the Department of Energy. He says the cost will eventually fall to about $30, which is about on par with the cost to fuel many high-mileage compact cars. For example, my 2012 Chevy Sonic 1.4T costs on average about $35 to fill, and gives me 300 miles of driving range, which is what the Toyota Mirai is claiming.
From the onset though, hydrogen fuel will remain nearly twice as expensive as gasoline it seems, though the Department of Energy is funding research to accelerate price parity with gasoline. But from the onset, filling up a hydrogen fuel cell car is going to be costly, moreso than even gasoline.
Then again, you could just buy a car like the Tesla Model S, which can go 265 miles on a full charge which will cost you (depending on where you live) less than $10 to fully charge. If you hook up to a Tesla Supercharger though, that fuel is free. The initial batch of Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell buyers will also get free fuel, though from a limited (though growing) number of hydrogen fueling stations across SoCal.
Toyota’s admission though makes it clear that even if you do buy a hydrogen car, it won’t save you a dime on fuel costs. Meanwhile, electric vehicles continue to increase in range and decrease in cost, and by 2017 the Tesla Model III aims to offer a 200-mile driving range per charge in a $35,000 sedan, half the price of the $70,000 Toyota Mirai, which begins production at the end of this year.
Sounds like yet another advantage goes to EVs, but Toyota doesn’t want to hear it.
