Lime Rock race track first opened in 1957, helped along by the efforts of one John Fitch, father of the Corvair Monza Sprint. In order to get along with its neighbors in the charming town next door, not a single race engine fires up on Sundays so the townspeople can go about their devotions in peace. Instead, the track offers such non-racing activities as car shows and antique fairs.
For the past 5 years, the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend has been devoted to the Royals Car Show, which drew more than 130 entries this year. The cars were lined up along the Sam Posey straight and stretched around Big Bend into the esses. The weather was beautiful, the fans were happy and the car owners were congenial.
Perhaps the star of the show was the all original 1956 Mercury Monterey NASCAR racer driven by Russ Truelove. He still owns the car and was on hand to be interviewed and answer questions.
The organizers asked the spectators to vote on their favorite car of the show. My selection was an absolutely stunning bright red Corvette split window coupe. Bet you can’t guess what year is was made!
There were lots and lots of current edition Mustangs and Camaros on hand. One in particular caught my eye. Here’s a fellow who is teaching his kid the love of automobiles early.
There weren’t a lot of really old cars on hand, but there was this superbly restored Stutz Black Hawk. What a gorgeous car!
There was also an REO, precursor to the Oldsmobile.
This year’s Chutzpah Award goes to the young lady who entered her 1978, unrestored Yugo and wasn’t embarrassed about her decision in the slightest. Hey, it still runs, which is something you can’t say about a lot of cars of that era.
Below, in no particular order, are several more cars I thought worth of preserving with my Brownie camera. Please enjoy all of them!
