Tesla Pitching Lower Priced Model S To Model 3 Reservation Holders

Last week, Tesla announced it is bringing back the 60 kWh version of its Model S. The new version will cost $4,000 less than the old Model S 60, but will still have all the goodness of the Model S baked in. Buyers can elect several upgrades if they wish. Things like dual motors, larger battery capacity, and Autopilot can add $16,000 to the base price. But the car as it comes is still a Tesla and a pretty awesome car.

The Tesla Model 3 is still about 18 months away from production. With almost 400,000 reservations pending, someone who reserves a Model 3 today may not see a car in the driveway until 2019. Then there is the issue of the federal tax credit. It is still available today, but may not be once Model 3 production kicks into high gear.
Someone who bought a Model S 60 today would have the car in the garage in a few weeks for a net cost of $58,500 after the tax credit is figured in. Many observers think the typical Model 3 with options like dual motors, larger battery, Supercharger access, and a few other goodies could sell for between $45,000 and $50,000.
So the question becomes, is it better to have a real, full size Tesla today for $58,500 or wait two years for a smaller car fully equipped for $50,000? Tesla has asked itself the same question and come up with a clever marketing campaign. It has begun sending an e-mail to selected Model 3 reservation holders inviting them to come test drive a Model S. Here’s the note that Tesla Motors Club userTravelSD80 posted on its website:
