Surviving a disaster of any kind- natural, medical, or human-powered- requires preparation, toughness, and intelligence. Most people who plan for these events do so at home, but home isn’t always the best place to be when the s#!7 hits the fan. That’s where the “bug out” vehicle comes in to play, and choosing the right bug out vehicle could be critical to you and your family’s survival.
So, what car should you buy to escape the zombie apocalypse next major crisis to hit your hometown? Today, we’d like you to consider the first-generation Honda CR-V.
Built between 1995 and 2001, the first generation Honda CR-V was one of the first “cute utes” to hit the market after the wildly successful (and still popular) Jeep Cherokee. Unlike the Cherokee, however, most of the examples that survive in good health today have led relatively sedate, suburban lives. The Honda’s also tend to be less prone to rust, and- because they share many components with the ubiquitous Honda Civic- parts are more readily available.
There’s another factor to consider, as well: because the “hot” SUV market was so new in the early 90s, most of the manufacturers who entered it at the time believed that real off-road abilities were essential to sales success. As such, vehicles like the first-gen Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mercedes ML have off road chops in spades, especially when compared to their 2015 cousins.
So, check out the video, think it over, then let us know what you think about an early Honda CR-V as a budget bug out beater in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!
