What has two electric motors, almost 800 horsepower, and gets 78 mpg? Just one car, the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid, and just yesterday the brochure from this uber hybrid leaked onto the internet. There are a lot of revelations about the world’s most expensive and kickass hybrid, including just how that horsepower gets divided up and our first looks at the futuristic interior.
The leaked brochure shows that the Porsche 918 Spyder utilizes two electric motors, which combined add 215 horsepower on their own, a majority of that going to the rear wheels. That leaves the high-revving V8 engine to make 580 horsepower, for a combined output of 795 horsepower. That makes the $845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder the most powerful, and expensive, hybrid you can buy from a car dealer.Spy pics and Porsche executives peg the release date for the Porsche 918 Spyder sometime next year.
The leaked brochure also reveals some other facts about this upcoming performance hybrid, including 14 different color options. Among these are two classic livery paint schemes from Martini Racing and Salzburg Racing, classic Porsche racing teams.
Alas, for all the info included in these brochures, some key tidbits are still missing. Among them is the EV-only driving range, charge time, and battery capacity of the hybrid system. If the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid really delivers 100 km of driving on just 3 liters of (super ultra premium) gasoline, that would translate to 78 mpg. That’s a truly staggering number, one that will almost certainly come down under EPA testing methods.
Still, this is for green car fans the ultimate hybrid, a car that most of us want but few of us can afford. With hybrids like this on the market, perhaps the haters will start to come around and realize that these cars are here to stay…and they don’t have to be boring.
