Volkswagen CrossBlue Plug-In SUV Approved

One of the more practical concept cars to come out of Germany in recent years has been the Volkswagen CrossBlue concepts, specifically the plug-in  SUV. The plug-in SUV offers an electric driving range of about 14 miles, and Volkswagen claimed 35 MPG combined gas mileage. That would make this mid-size SUV as efficient as many mid-size cars.
Volkswagen has approved production of a CrossBlue-based SUV at its Chattanooga, Tennessee production plant, which has been mired in a controversial union battle. The $900 million investment will bring some 2,000 jobs to the area, as well as a much-needed plug-in SUV to Vdub’s lineup.
The CrossBlue-inspired SUV will use the new Volkswagen MQB architecture, which is set to underpin much of the German brand’s lineup in the coming decade. This will give it a lot of powertrain options, from conventional gas and diesel engines, to the plug-in drivetrain of the concept, and possibly even an all-electric model to rival the Tesla Model X (though that will likely be reserved for Audi instead).
Volkswagen is also bringing a new National Research & Development and Planning Center of the Volkswagen Group of America to the areain an effort to better determine the wants and needs of U.S. customers. Volkswagen sales have doubled in the past four years, but their aging fleet of models is in dire need of upgrade, with sales down about 13% in the first half of 2014.
The CrossBlue SUV will offer a 7-passgenger SUV to American customers for the first time, and an efficient one at that without any current rivals. With the completely-redesigned 2015 Volkswagen Golf debuting the MQB architecture in America soon, the brand is hoping sales rebound in a big way as it continues on its quest to become the world’s largest automaker.
Production will take place in unused portions of the factory, and separately, the UAW is looking to form a local auto union, after the narrow defeat of a unionization effort earlier this year.

Volkswagen CrossBlue Concept



Volkswagen is still very much dead-set on meeting its goal of selling 800,000 vehicles in the United States by 2018. And while the company has said on several occasions that it will not be expanding its lineup to models smaller than the Golf, there's certainly room for expansion elsewhere in its portfolio. At the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen debuted its CrossBlue concept – a three-row, midsize crossover designed specifically with the US market in mind. And during a roundtable discussion at the Frankfurt Motor Showearlier this month, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America Jonathan Browning told us that a midsize CUV is the company's "top priority" in the US.

But let's be clear: The CrossBlue is not a replacement for the Touareg, or any other vehicle in the company's US lineup (except maybe the Chrysler-supplied Routan minivan). This will be an all-new offering built on Volkswagen's scalable MQB architecture – the same platform that underpins the Mk7 Golf, among other products. To give us a better idea of exactly what's in store for the new CrossBlue, Volkswagen flew us out to Germany's Siegerland Airport the day before the Frankfurt show to give us an up-close-and-personal look at its all-important new crossover.

During our time in Germany, Browning said on several occasions that a midsize crossover is a natural fit for Volkswagen in the US, and the CrossBlue, though still purely a concept at this point, gives a proper glimpse at what we can expect from an entry in this highly competitive segment. It's still hard to discern what the final design will look like, but we don't expect the shape to differ too much from what you see here, with nice, handsome proportions and clean lines – it'll look right at home with the other VW products in the showroom.

The CrossBlue measures in at 196.3 inches long, 79.3 inches wide and 62.2 inches tall. Compared to the Touareg, the concept is longer and wider, though is a full six inches shorter in height – more appropriate dimensions for a true seven-seat crossover. Volkswagen has fitted the CrossBlue with 21-inch alloy wheels at all four corners, wrapped in 235/45-series tires, though we're sure smaller rollers will be offered on base models when the production vehicle is launched.

Inside, there isn't anything remarkable in terms of design or packaging, with a modern, forward-thinking cabin that incorporates all of the basic infotainment and driver convenience functions into an airy, spacious cockpit. The sloping center stack features control knobs that are flush with the main surfacing, and raise up when the vehicle is started – just like the gear selector on modern Jaguar products.

All of the necessary infotainment data is housed inside of a prominent 10.2-inch touchscreen interface in the middle of the dash, with a clean design that also displays hybrid drive information. Volkswagen says that there's a new three-dimensional feature, where, for example, the landscape actually rotates in the navigation function.

The CrossBlue concept uses a six-seat configuration, with two chairs in the second row and a split-folding third row. If the CrossBlue enters production, both six- and seven-passenger options will be available, with a full, three-person bench fitted in the second row instead of the two individual chairs. With both rows folded, up to 77.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity is available, and on the concept, Volkswagen has incorporated iPad Mini rear seat entertainment systems mounted into the back of the front seat headrests.

For the purposes of this concept, VW engineered the CrossBlue to be a plug-in diesel hybrid, mating two electric motors to the company's new EA288 oil-burning engine. The diesel engine on its own is good for 188 horsepower, but combined with the two e-motors – a 40-kilowatt unit up front, 80-kw motor out back – total system output is estimated to be around 302 horsepower and 517 pound-feet of torque, running to all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Because of the scalable MQB architecture, though, Volkswagen engineers told us that the CrossBlue could be offered with a variety of powertrains, including a more conventional gasoline-only V6, or smaller mills like the company's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, based on market demand. In the case of this plug-in hybrid system, Volkswagen estimates that, in hybrid mode, the CrossBlue will achieve roughly 35 miles per gallon. If the electric mode is utilized – with a 14 miles of electric range before the gasoline engine kicks in – that number could rise to 89 mpge (miles per gallon equivalent) combined.

We were promised some drive time in the CrossBlue during our time at Siegerland, and while we did get some, it wasn't exactly what we expected. Due to heavy rain and colder-than-usual weather, we were only allowed to drive the CrossBlue in a small circle around an airport hangar, and your author maxed out at a blistering top speed of 11 miles per hour. So as for drive impressions, we don't really have any. But as far as concept cars go, the CrossBlue was hardly a fragile machine, and other members of the media reported being allowed to drive the vehicle as fast as – wait for it – 20 mph on an open runway. Volkswagen tells us that the CrossBlue can actually top out at a maximum speed of 127 mph, and the run to 60 mph will take seven seconds flat. That latter number sounds pretty impressive, but considering the massive torque thrust available, it's not all that surprising.

When the vehicle is first started, it acts as a traditional hybrid, where the electric motors provide assist whenever possible, but the diesel engine kicks on shortly after launch to provide maximum power. If the driver selects E-mode, however, the diesel engine is shut off and the CrossBlue is powered solely by the rear, 80-kW motor for up to the aforementioned 14 miles. Other interesting factors in the CrossBlue experience involve a coasting mode; when the accelerator is released the engine and electric motors are decoupled from the drivetrain, assuming the battery is sufficiently charged. Furthermore, Volkswagen has detailed a "boosting mode," where the e-motors work with the TDI engine to provide maximum power to all four wheels. Finally, when an off-road mode is selected, the front electric motor gets its power from the TDI engine, and the power is then sent to the rear e-motor. As VW explains it, "Since the energy for driving the rear wheels flows by wire and not mechanically, this is referred to as 'propshaft by wire'."

Another neat feature about the CrossBlue system is that the vehicle can actually act as an auxiliary electrical generator. Behind the fuel door on the driver's side, there are two sockets – one to charge the lithium-ion battery, and the second one can be used to connect electrical devices such as coolers or lighting for camping.

A firm decision still has not been made on whether the vehicle will get the green light.
But despite the CrossBlue being at the top of the list for Volkswagen's product plans in the US, a firm decision still has not been made on whether the vehicle will get the green light. Last we heard, the final decision will likely come early next year, with the company's Chattanooga, TN plant as the production site for this vehicle.

Our takeaway from this encounter with the CrossBlue is that Volkswagen has a very solid plan laid out for a three-row crossover, designed specifically with the US market in mind. And with the death of the Routan leaving a seven-passenger hole in the company's lineup, a decision can't some soon enough. Volkswagen stands to gain a lot of traction in the US with an entry into this highly competitive class, making its 800,000-unit goal not seem quite as lofty.

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupé plug-in makes its European debut; showcasing the MQB

Volkswagen brought the new CrossBlue Coupé plug-in hybrid sporty mid-size SUV show car, introduced in April at Auto Shanghai 2013 (earlier post), to a media event in Berlin for its European premiere.
The CrossBlue Coupé—based off the Volkswagen Group’s MQB architecture (the Group’s modular assembly kit for vehicles with transverse-mounted engines)—features a transverse-mounted turbocharged direct-injection (TSI) 220 kW (295 hp) 3.0L V6 gasoline engine (EA 390) and six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission with 40 kW electric motor (DQ 400 E) in the engine compartment. The DQ 400 E hybrid transmission is also being applied in the upcoming Audi A3 plug-in hybrid. (Earlier post.)

The MQB is the Volkswagen Group’s assembly kit for vehicles with transverse-mounted engines and transmissions and front-wheel and/or all-wheel drive. (The CrossBlue Coupé is a sportier, gasoline-engined version of the diesel-engined CrossBlue SUV concept introduced at this year’s Detroit auto show. Earlier post. Although equipped with a different engine, the CrossBlue SUV also uses the DQ 400 E hybrid transmission and rear-axle motor as the Coupé.)
The power electronics unit is integrated in the front engine compartment above the DSG unit and operates at a voltage level of around 375 V. A DC/DC converter supplies the body electrical system with the 12 Volt electrical power it requires.
A 9.8 kWh Li-ion battery is housed in the center tunnel, and the rear axle features an 85 kW electric traction motor connected to the front via an “electric propshaft”.
The electric motors contribute 180 N·m (133 lb-ft) (front) and 270 N·m (199 lb-ft) (rear). In boosting—i.e., when the full power potentials of the engine and electric motors are combined, as in Sport mode—the drive system can produce a total system torque of up to 700 N·m (516 lb-ft).
The CrossBlue Coupé can deliver as much as 415 hp (309 kW). With acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, and a top speed of 147 mph (237 km/h), the CrossBlue Coupé has a combined fuel consumption of 79 mpg (3.0 l/100 km) in the new European driving cycle (NEDC).

In hybrid mode fuel consumption (sub-cycle of the European ECE-R101 standard with discharged battery powered by just the TSI drive), the SUV consumes 6.9 l/100 km (34 mpg US) of fuel. This value enables a theoretical range of around 1,190 kilometers (739 miles) with a fuel tank capacity of 80 liters (21 gallons US).
The basic family elements of the MQB are electrics/electronics; powertrain; chassis; and body & trim. While certain aspects of the MQB vehicles, such as the orientation of all the engines, are uniform, there is considerable scope for variation in dimensions such as the wheelbase and track widths. The CrossBlue Coupé uses MQB front suspension and four-link rear suspension and electro-mechanical MQB steering.

All new MQB models are designed so that they can be built with natural gas, hybrid, or electric powertrains as well as diesel or gasoline engines. As an example, the powertrain of the CrossBlue Coupé could apply a smaller battery pack, do away with the rear traction motor and on-board charging electronics, and be delivered as a conventional hybrid variant.
The default drive program for the CrossBlue Coupé is “Eco” or hybrid mode; it optimally manages use of the drive sources. The electric motors are used for propulsive power as often as possible in this case. The driver can switch to the Sport mode by pressing a button; in this case, the vehicle exploits the maximum power of the drive system. There is also an Offroad mode (permanent all-wheel drive), EV mode (driving with zero emissions), and a Charge mode (battery charging).

The shifter for the six-speed transmission has very short throws, thanks to a new drive-by-wire logic. Like a joystick, the lever continually returns to its middle position; the “D”, “R” and “N” positions are activated by a short flick and “P” by a separate pushbutton that is integrated in the lever.
Arranged on the right side, next to the shift lever grip, are the buttons for ESC deactivation (used when driving in deep snow, for example) and for the drive modes: “Sport”, “Eco”, “Offroad”, “Charge”, and “EV” (electric driving).

In EV mode, the CrossBlue Coupé can cover a distance of up to 21 miles (34 km) in pure electric mode; top speed is limited to 75 mph (121 km/h). In EV mode, only the rear electric motor provides propulsion; the V6 TSI engine is decoupled from the drivetrain by opening the clutch, and the engine is shut off. As soon as there is a need for gasoline power—because of the battery charge or other parameters—it is coupled to the drivetrain again.
The driver can intentionally switch over to a charging mode by pressing another button on the center console. The TSI engine charges the battery while driving in order to store enough electrical energy for EV operation later in the journey.
Volkswagen is hosting Green Car Congress at the media event, which will also highlight the new Golf GTD (the first GTD built off the MQB components set), the XL1 and the MQB.

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept Needs To Be Built

Volkswagen has been gaining a lot of ground and credibility as a “green” automaker, but that hasn’t stopped them from offering vehicles with performance aspirations. Their latest concept, the Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe, is fast, sharp-looking, and can go up to 21 miles on electricity alone. What’s not to love?
An evolution of the original Volkswagen Cross Coupe concept, the CrossBlue Coupe utilizes two electric motors as well; one for the front wheels, and one for the back. A 9.8 kWh battery pack supplies electricity, though the four-cylinder turbodiesel engine was replaced by a gas-burning V6 with 295 horsepower. Less efficient, sure, but more powerful and fun.
Combined with the electric motors, total output is pegged at an impressive 415 horsepower, which allows the CrossBlue Coupe to scoot from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds. Top speed is 147 mph, and the electric motors can carry the Coupe up to 75 mph alone.
The all-electric range is about 21 miles, and Volkswagen claims a 79 mpg rating on the European testing cycle. Running the gas V6 alone, fuel economy falls by more than half, to just 34 mpg, though total range is pegged at about 720 miles per tank.
I for one really dig this take on a practical, sporty, and sharp-looking plug-in hybrid, and I’m sure I am not the only one hoping it shows up on dealership lots sooner rather than later.
