Smart Autonomous Car Concept To Debut In Frankfurt

Daimler revealed a new electric concept car this past week by introducing the Smart vision EQ fortwo, a car that combines familiar Smart design elements with some forward-thinking technology. Unsurprisingly, self-driving is front and centre of this concept, demonstrating Daimler’s commitment to its own car2go service, and asserting its intention to be a key player in the future of urban mobility.
Indeed, car2go was specifically called out in the announcement of this concept vehicle, which cited 2.6 million global users renting a car with the service every 1.4 seconds. What do car2go’s existing users have to do with a concept car? Even a passing look at the Smart vision EQ’s features shows how this could be a terrific step forward in the landscape of urban carsharing.
The concept is focused around a swarm intelligence software. This technology would base an algorithm on existing user data, allowing the car to make itself available in high-demand areas. Users would then book a vehicle that would come to them, rather than seek an available vehicle nearby in the app. Second, the onboard battery, just 30 kWh, is designed for automatic charging between trips at power stations and inductive charging docks.
The most striking design feature of the Smart vision EQ are the large glass doors, which not only offer an incredible view for passengers, but also become interior and exterior facing displays — perhaps to provide traffic and weather updates, or to act as digital advertising billboards. An additional two exterior LED displays positioned in the registration plate positions at the front and rear of the vehicle provide user information, including the availability of the vehicle in question, or the name of the user who booked it.
The Smart vision EQ fortwo is just a concept, but for those who can’t wait to ditch diesel, Daimler’s Smart fortwo electric is the cheapest electric car in the US. You can also see how it compares by reading our other electric car reviews.
Concept vehicles such as this raise some interesting questions. Will anyone living in a city actually own their own car in the near future? Or will we all be driving the sharing economy, ordering a car that will arrive at our location, on demand? With the Smart vision EQ fortwo, it certainly seems that Daimler has a commitment to smoothing out some of the technological bumps in the road for shared, self-driving electric vehicles. It’s not unreasonable to say that this future will soon become reality in cities around the world.

Kia Fastback Concept Will Star At Frankfurt Auto Show

The world of automobiles is about to get turned on its ear when the Kia fastback concept is unveiledat the Frankfurt auto show on September 12. The trend in car design today is to provide the convenience of a hatchback and the utility of a crossover all wrapped in a body that exudes speed and power. The car, which was designed at Kia’s European studio in Frankfurt, does all that and more.
Cars with long hoods and curvaceous cabins fire the imagination and stoke the emotions. The Bugatti Atlantic coupe may have been the first (we will leave the purists to argue over that). Certainly the iconic Mercedes 300 SL coupe qualifies as a head turner. No less a personage than Enzo Ferrari called the Jaguar XK-Ecoupe the most beautiful production car ever made. General Motors and Ford have sold millions of fastback Mustangs and Camaros. The latest Mazda Visionconcept pays homage to the theme, although sadly it is unlikely to ever see production.
The Kia fastback concept takes all that history, brings it forward, and uses if to make a bold design statement that hits the sweet spot of what car buyers crave today. Few details are available in advance of the Frankfurt show but it appears the car will be part of the C’eed model lineup. Similar to the Elantra sold in North America, the C’eed is a Europe specific car built in  Zilina, Slovakia.
“The extended hot hatch styling retains the athleticism of the current Pro_cee’d model, while combining its striking visual presence with a dash of real-world versatility,” Kia said in a statement. “Reworked and reimagined for a new generation of driver, it puts forward a bold vision for a potential member of the next-generation Cee’d family.”
The concept is such a departure from anything else in the market in the price range Kia caters to, it may be sold separately. “We don’t make concept cars for no good reason,” a Kia source told Automotive News Europe. “It’s up for very serious consideration as a standalone model.”
What sort of powertrain the Kia fastback concept will have when and if it goes into production is a matter of conjecture at the moment. Norway’s ABC Hyneter speculates it may be available as a plug-in hybrid, which would put it in direct competition with the Kia Niro PHEV. The C’eed models are not sold in North America, which suggests the concept, whatever its production equivalent is called, won’t be either. Still, that doesn’t mean the styling elements that make the Kia fastback concept so appealing won’t find their way into other Kia offerings in the future.

Future Of Electric Cars Depends On China, Says Nissan CEO Ghosn



China is the future of the electric car.
At least, that's what Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn believes.
Speaking to the Associated Press at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, he said the car industry is carefully watching China to see how it decides to reduce emissions.
When the Chinese do make their move, it will bring on "the explosion of the electriccar," Ghosn said. (His words, not ours.)

While no one wants exploding electric cars, it's not surprising that Ghosn is hoping for an increase in demand from China.
Both Renault and Nissan have bet heavily on electricity as the ultimate alternative to fossil fuels.
Together, Renault and Nissan have sold over 100,000 electric cars, the majority of them Nissan Leafs.
Nissan sold 2,420 Leafs in the United States last month, a new high for the model, and will have sold about 80,000 globally by the end of this month.
Will China keep Renault-Nissan's electric car sales streak alive?
A vast fleet of electric cars is one of the main goals of the Chinese government's "new energy vehicle" policy, although how it will actually boost sales remains a bit of a mystery.
"New energy vehicle" originally meant electric cars, but the government revised the standard in 2011, shifting the focus to hybrids and other technologies that could potentially boost fuel efficiency.

At the time, the Chinese government set a goal of having one million new energy vehicles on the road by 2015. The bar waslowered to 500,000 vehicles in a revised version of the policy released last year.
While China has continually revised its goals to bring them more in line with reality, it hasn't given up on electrification altogether.
Just recently, it added new incentives on electric cars while largely ignoring hybrids.
Ghosn undoubtedly hopes things stay that way.

Frankfurt 2013: Twike Trots Out the 4XP Human Powered Hybrid

Nestled away in a small corner of this year’s Frankfurt auto show, the tiny Twike company rolled out its nearly production-ready, X-Prize contending 4XP plug-in hybrid. The sci-fi inspired, jet-fighter cockpit-styled Twike isn’t what you might think it is, though. It’s a hybrid, in that it combines the power of its electric motor with a more conventional power plant – in this case: a human power plant.
That’s right! The Twike is, essentially, a pedal-assist covered bicycle that’s intended primarily as low-impact, zero-emission urban transport. If the batteries go low, you can pedal them up. If you’re going downhill, you can use a form of regenerative braking to charge the batteries. If it’s raining, you won’t get wet. The best part, to me, is that you can use the electric motor more on the way to work and avoid showing up sweaty and stinky, and then pedal more on the way home as part of your cardio/workout routine.
The other best thing about the Twike, though, is that it really can replace a small car – especially with the upgraded battery packs and electric motor with a 45 mph top speed and decent, 50+ mile range as a pure EV at 35-ish mph – which was good enough for a trip around the world, two years ago.
SO, while the Twike might not be perfect for everyone, of course, but if you’re in the market for a small, 2-seat commuter with a proven track record of sales (Twikes have been around, in Europe, for almost a decade), manufacturing know-how (again: decade), and safety (the Twikes have been crash-tested and reportedly meet stringent TÜV standards), the Twike 4XP might be just thing.
Here’s hoping some enterprising American company has the sense to bring one of these over to the ‘States as an NEV, then. We’ll keep you posted. Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE concept improves mpg numbers to 118 mpg, loses AC



Before the Frankfurt Motor ShowPeugeot was saying that its Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE Concept would emit just 49 grams of CO2 per kilometer. That's the equivalent of 111 miles per gallon (US) and it was an impressive enough number for the automaker to plaster it all over the side of the show car displayed on the stand. There's just one problem: the car is actually more efficient.

Peugeot issued a short press release during the show (available below) that explains that the clean hatch actually emits just 46 grams of CO2/km. That means the Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE Concept's true number is 118 mpg (still in US gallons, but this is using Europe's lenient NEDC European Drive Cycle Combined fuel efficiency test). Whether the problem stemmed from incorrect or incomplete testing before the show or from someone writing the six upside down, we don't know.

Aside from a frugal sense of consumption, the 208 HYbrid FE has a bit of punch. It goes 0-62 miles per hour in eight seconds, which isn't going to set records but does reveal a bit of the car's racing roots from the Peugeot Sport department. That history may also explain why Peugeot took out the air conditioning system, citing, "its impact on fuel consumption." Perhaps it's a good thing this concept is destined just for the auto show circuit.

Ford’s New Concept Another Step Towards Self-Driving Cars

This week sees the opening of the Frankfurt Auto Show, but Ford Motor Company got a jump start on news week with the unveiling of a new concept car at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, Germany this week. While the car itself is not new, the technology on board is a big step towards cars that eventually drive themselves.
Based on a Ford S-Max minivan-ish car, the concept was introduced by Ford CEO Alan Mulally himself at the IFA show. The concept hosts a suite of technologies aimed at automating many driving features.
The heart of this system is a wireless car-to-car communications system using various WiFi networks that communicates road dangers to other vehicles further back.  Also on board is an innovative camera and radar system can automatically apply the brakes if it senses a pedestrian. A self-parking system that can maneuver the car into both perpendicular and parallel parking spots, and unpark itself as well, stealing a lot of work from body shops that rely on bad drivers.
As proof that Big Brother watching isn’t always a bad thing, a heart-rate monitor can share important information about your health while driving with your doctor, should you allow it. Ford has demonstrated similar technology in the past, like an alert system that can monitor sleepy drivers and suggest they pull over and get some sleep.

These technologies do not allow the Ford concept to drive by itself, unlike the Google car. Mulally was also careful to not mention any sort of timeline for automated vehicles, candidly explaining how difficult this technology is to develop. The long-term benefits are immense though, and some analysts think self-driving cars can be a trillion (with a T) dollar industry.
For alt-fuel fans like ourselves, self-driving cars can also introduce new ways to utilize new and existing energy resources in the most efficient way possible. But if you ask me, automated cars are still decades away from dealership lots, and could even become a moving goal post, much like hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
One thing’s for sure though; many automakers are suddenly very keen on the idea of self-driving cars. Is the public as well?

Frankfurt 2013: BMW C Evolultion Electric Scooter

The Frankfurt auto show is usually the beginning of a model year’s auto show season, and this year is no exception with a host of 2014 models being shown for the first time. BMW is starting us off with a bit of 2 wheeled news this morning, having recently announced that the company’s C Evolution electric scooter will be officially available for sale after its September 10th showing at Frankfurt.
BMW’s been teasing us with the C evolution since the “sleek, pointy” concept version broke cover in 2011. More recently, the gas-powered versions of the C maxi-scoot have gotten rave reviews as fast, practical, sexy long-distance tourers and capable city-dwellers, as well.
The new BMW C Evolution uses the same “energy storage modules” that BMW’s i division is using in their recently announced i3 and i8 machines, so performance is expected to be solid, with final specs (power, range, load capacity, etc.) to be revealed on the 10th. Stay tuned!

Electric InEco Concept Weighs Less Than A Ton

The Frankfurt Motor Show is here, and major automakers are duking it out for a lion’s share of the attention with their latest concept cars. But there are smaller outfits there too, including a German university that rolled out the InEco Concept. It’s a small, all-electric car with the same driving range as many mass market EVs, but manages to weigh less than 2,000 pounds.
A product of the Dresden Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology, the InEco concept undeniably resembles a cross between the Hyundai Veloster. But more than looks, it’s a product meant to demonstrate the new materials and methods of shaving weight from electric vehicles.
Working with industrial partners like Leichtbau-Zentrum Sachsen GmbH and ThyssenKrupp AG, researchers and students built an electric car that, including its battery pack, weighs just 1,984 pounds, or around 900 kilograms. Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, steel-hybrid composites, and intelligent design keeps the curb weight down, eliminating a major roadblock to electric car range increases; the heavy, heavy battery.
While Tesla Motors has simply brute-forced its way to a solution by using a large 85 kWh battery, most electric cars settle for battery packs between 20 and 30 kWh to achieve around 80 to 90 miles of range per charge. But the InEco Concept makes due with just a 15 kWh battery pack and a 122 horsepower electric motor, which allows it to go as far as 87 miles between charges. Even better, acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes just 7.5 seconds, with a top speed of around 100 mph.
Lightweight composite material technology is working its way into mainstream automobiles more and more, from supercar concepts to production model hoods. if anything is a preview of the future of electric cars, it’s the lightweight body panels of the InEco Concept.

BMW i8 headed to Frankfurt



According to EdmundsBMW will reveal its production i8 hybrid sports car at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. The i8 is the second vehicle to come from the automaker's new "i" initiative, following the debut of the smaller i3 hatchback last month.

The BMW i8 makes its debut nearly four years after the original Vision EfficientDynamics concept bowed at the Frankfurt expo in 2009. The production car is expected to use a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that drives the rear wheels, coupled to an electric motor that drives the front wheels. Combined output is said to be something like 393 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, based on our earlier reports. The i8 is also expected to be very light, with curb weight coming in somewhere around 3,125 pounds. Finally, the i8 is said to have a pure electric range of 20 miles, and should be able to hit 62 miles per hour in just under five seconds.

Other publications had the chance to ride along in the i8 (in prototype form) and came away impressed. We're hoping we'll feel the same when the car officially goes on sale sometime in early 2014. Stay tuned for more at the i8's official unveiling in just a few weeks.

Rimac Concept_One shows up in Monaco with $980k sticker price

It takes a lot to stand apart at an exposition as jam-packed with glitzy treasure as the Frankfurt Motor Show and impress the hordes of automotive journalists there assembled, but we were suitably impressed when we laid eyes upon the Rimac Concept_One at the Messe this past September. The Croatian upstart put together a supercar of (figurative, if not literal) Bugatti proportions, but instead of building it around a fossil-guzzling conventional powerplant, Rimac designed its hypercar with the equivalent of 1,088 horsepower worth of electric motors.

With a 92-kWh battery powering the electric motors at each wheel, the Rimac is said to be capable of rocketing to 62 from a standstill in just 2.8 seconds while traveling as far as 372 miles on a single charge. The team of former Pininfarina designers penned an attractive shape to go with it, the Bulgarian leathercrafters extraordinaires at Vilner were brought in to work on the interior, HRE developed a unique set of monoblock alloys and Vredestein debuted its new Ultrac Vorti tires designed by Giugiaro all for the Concept_One.

Impressive specs, all, but what's most impressive is that the Concept_One is no mere concept – you can actually buy it, assuming you've got the scratch. Upon showcasing the electric supercar at the Top Marques show in Monaco, Rimac announced a limited run of 88 examples will be built, each fetching $980,000 – a price as princely as the regent who was on hand to check it out in Monte Carlo. Which only goes to prove that you can, indeed, have your cake and eat it too, but it'll cost you dearly.

2012 Volkswagen UP!

Big old Volkswagen is back to thinking small, and it's finally doing it right. After two frankly awful attempts at supplying the rest of the world with cheap tin boxes called Fox and Lupo, company bosses have done some soul searching and this is the result: a tiny road warrior that's absolutely worthy of the 6.3-inch wide emblem on its grill.

It might seem like only yesterday, but the Up! was first shown as a concept back in the pre-crisis days of 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Talk about fortuitous timing, because this 2+2 three-door minicar is exactly the sort of car that much of economically stunned Europe is craving nowadays. We all, Euro or Yank, want as much premium feel in our cars as cheaply as possible, and this is exactly why the little Up! is destined to clobber The Continent's vast field of city cars.

We've just spent 12 days in a top-trim Up! White Edition driving around in what certainly will be one of the car's major markets: the piratical, everyone-for-themselves streets of Milan, Italy. With our American brainset, at first we thought, "Yeah, it's really cute and useful, well built and all, but..." That qualifying "but" was just because the Up! is so small in every dimension save front seat room. As we would come to learn over our dozen days, with an all-new 1.0-liter, 74-horsepower three-cylinder and a serviceable five-speed manual, this little bugger can be a little roll-y in tight curves taken with any spirit, but she sure is fun.

After a day of using the Up! to drive around the Lombard capitol, however, our concerns all but evaporated. We quickly came to love the way this tiny hatch sliced and diced through Italy's notoriously heinous traffic while rewarding us with truly premium quality steering and over-the-road feel. The cabin was surprisingly purr-quiet and throttling and braking was accomplished with far more aplomb than any of its competitors – including the Fiat 500. The 500 provides an almost spot-on comparison to the Up! in our fancier trim, though the Marchionne special would absolutely suffer a loss when comparing cabins. As for the Smart ForTwo, the Up! destroys it handily, and you can bet that Daimler's suits are extremely concerned. Italian cities are by far the ForTwo's best markets, and it was impossible not to notice how many bystanders ogled our extremely white VW. Every time we stopped, we were bombarded with questions and nothing but positive comments.

Riding atop VW's latest front-engine, front-wheel-drive small car architecture dubbed MQB, VW's stated wet but unloaded weight for our Up! is a scant 2,072 pounds. Before you start with the "death trap" comments, let it be known that this thing just passed the toughest Euro NCAP crash tests with a full five-star rating, so it's one Mighty Mouse. The transversely mounted naturally aspirated triple-cylinder engine is capable of regularly returning 50 miles per gallon without trying too hard, either.

Space up front for two passengers is nothing short of huge, with seats that can slide way back to accommodate the leggiest of basketball stars. Another big plus is the crystal-clear visibility all around through the car's acoustically optimized five-layer glass. Those easy-access doors are a whopping 51.2 inches long and they can open wide to around an 80-degree angle. Some body twisting is necessary in tight parking conditions, but at the curb, it's an easy step up and out as though you're exiting a Rolls-Royce. The rearview mirror – an often underappreciated appendage – is big and rectangular to let the driver see out of the big and rectangular rear glass. How nice.

This is the first application of the three-cylinder member of VW's new EA211 engine clan in any real volume, and it's utterly quiet – even under stiffer throttle. Both two-cylinder and three-cylinder engines tend to have a surprisingly civilized sound to them when done properly, and this all-aluminum unit emits a soothing baritone note while cruising; when you hit the gas, the sound grows like there's a big strong guy curled up under the hood.

We mentioned a little roll in the hard corners. The suspension here is McPherson struts in front and a solid beam in back. Not particularly sophisticated, but it's well-tuned for this very light car and its intended uses. The dampers are long-travel monotube units that never once bottomed out through all of Milan's daffily imperfect streets. Besides a five-speed manual transmission, a single-clutch automatic is in the works for mid-2012, and there will also be an available sport suspension setup that lowers the whole car by some six-tenths of an inch. We suspect it'll teach cars like the larger Honda Fit Sport a thing or two.

Combining good ride comfort with slinky smooth electromechanical power steering (lock-to-lock in almost 3.0 turns) made driving through the Italian city's many impromptu obstacles almost feel like sport. Besides the high sideview mirrors, the Up! is no wider at any point than your outer door panel, so it's easy to know whether the car will make it through an opening in the traffic mayhem or not. The Up! is also an expert at adapting to the many occasions in Italy where a street that is indicated as two lanes suddenly becomes a three-wide affair.


While all of the VW's dimensions and mechanicals effortlessly showed the world around us how a minicar should be built, our White Edition benefited from top-of-the-line 16-inch alloys and Continental ContiPremiumContact2 treads – 185/50 R16 81T all around. All four contact patches worked overtime to nail every line we chose through busy northern Italy. Of course, if this Up! White Edition does make it to the States, it will probably cost somewhere just north of $13,000. But, as ever, you pay for what you get, right?

Our tester carried the current top power specification available for the three-cylinder, meaning 74 hp at its 6,200-rpm redline and 70 pound-feet of torque from 3,000 rpm. You'll find 60 mph in around 13.0 seconds flat and a 107 mph top speed – typical figures for cars of this ilk. That might seem slow, but as we hinted earlier, once our American smoky burnout-mindset cooled its jets and we drove more like a real Up! owner might, the real glory of the VW became clear. In truth, this is the first actual premium A-segment car that completely convinces us. The Fiat 500 may be cuter, but the material quality choices throughout just can't compare to a similarly priced Up!

The VW's rear seats are nigh on useless but for the wee ones, though there is huge headroom and shoulder room in back – something else that cannot be said of the 500. Baggage space with all seats up is just 8.9 cubic feet, becoming 12.0 or so when removing the rear floor panel and dropping it down. Folding the rear seatbacks is a cinch and they lay flat to help create an eminently usable 33.6 cubic feet.

Of course, the only manner in which Volkswagen – or anyone – can make money on smallies like the Up! is to build them in countries that can produce high volumes with less overhead, and the Up! is indeed built at VW's state-of-the-art facility in Bratislava, Slovakia – the same facility that makes not only the larger Polo, but also the Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7 and the Porsche Cayenne trio.

Will the Up! ever get over to the USA and Canada to start a small battle with the ForTwo and 500? We thought about that every day we zipped through the city, and we have to say that it'd be really tough to justify the business case, especially considering how those two vehicles are(n't) selling in the States. Given that VW never even brought the Polo over, why would they leapfrog down a notch and bring over this car? If, however, this were to happen sometime, the powertrain would be probably need to be a turbocharged version of the three-cylinder inspired by the Up! GT concept shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show – hopefully good for more power than the Stateside Fiat 500's 101 hp and 98 lb-ft of torque. Plus, the four-door Up! we saw as the Cross Up! Concept in Frankfurt has already been confirmed, and that model would seemingly help build a U.S. business case a bit.

The Up! starts deliveries in Europe in late February. Two Volkswagen subsidiaries, SEAT in Spain and Škoda in the Czech Republic, will be building sister cars along this identical theme – the Mii and the Citigo, respectively.

If Fiat could afford to put together something more along the lines of the quality substance levels we find in this stylish Up!, maybe more Americans would be buying the Italian mouse that isn't roaring like Turin thought it would. Barring that, we're hoping that VW considers the Up! as an opportunity to rekindle its reputation for (very) small car excellence here in the U.S.
