BYD Electric Buses Are Here – We Tour the Factory

As the first Chinese auto manufacturing plant in the US, the opening of the BYD bus and coach factory, as it’s officially known, was a big win for Southern California, bringing 300 new jobs — which are split between their US headquarters in Los Angeles and their Lancaster electric bus factory. On top of that, BYD has an aggressive plan that it built with the City of Lancaster to bring even more jobs … and electric vehicles to the States with the total BYD staff expected to be over 625 by 2018. This bodes well for the area (yay, cleantech jobs!) and for the electrification of US transportation. It’s evident that BYD has a great partnership with the City of Lancaster, whom they worked with closely to develop not only the plan to stand up the factory but on a full growth plan spanning 5 years of substantial growth. There was also quite a bit of support from former Governor Arnold Swarzenegger and current Governor Jerry Brown to court BYD and woo them into coming to California.
Lancaster is just 75 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California, which puts its factory in close proximity to the Los Angeles Metropolitan area while leaving enough distance to stay out of the expensive real estate that is much of the greater Los Angeles Area. They are also very centrally located in a key state that’s driving aggressive anti-climate change policy, which I’m certain is no accident.

We have covered many of the new contracts and innovations related to BYD’s buses on CleanTechnica, but what sets them apart? One thing is their insane range – their stated range is 150 miles per charge but a recent 24-hour stress test in the Antelope Valley proved that they are capable of cranking out 240–270 miles per charge (386–434 kms). As if that weren’t impressive enough, they then charged the buses back up (they can fully charge the bus in as fast as 1 hour!) and ran them again until they were empty over and over for a full 24 hours for a total of 746 miles.
If those impressive stats aren’t enough, BYD’s electric buses are also capable of on-route charging. This means that they can charge at bus stops or at a bus depot while the driver takes their mandated break, etc, with a goal of being able to run continuously. This has already been approved in forward-thinking Washington as part of a recently announced contract. While BYD has determined that 100 kW wireless charging seems to be the sweet spot in balancing high speed and minimal wear on the battery, they have proven 200 kW speeds at a 12″ air gap while working with wireless charging technology companies like Momentum Dynamics to continue to drive improvements in their implementation of wireless inductive charging.
With wireless charging, a big concern is efficiency, as power is lost just transferring the power to the vehicle — BYD shared that the efficiency is in the high 90s, which sounds like a good start. If I were looking for a set of electric buses with wireless charging, I would want a more specific number, as the wireless charging efficiency has a direct impact on the cost to charge these high-usage vehicles as all power lost just pushing the power to the bus is non-value add overhead (tl;dr — higher efficiency = lower cost to run the buses).
BYD goes all-in when it comes to its buses. The company seems to have thought through every detail and optimized every part of the equation. This is evident when popping the (rear) hood. Standing front and center are the charge controller and charger… which are both onboard. They are flanked by two inverters to either side which are key to what BYD is doing with the hardware back there: Building the charging infrastructure and inverters into each bus means buyers don’t have to pay for expensive (upwards of $250,000 each) stationary chargers and infrastructure on top of the buses. All of the high-tech charging equipment is always on board, which allows the stationary electrical vehicle service equipment (EVSE) that is also included in the purchase of each bus is merely a straight pass-through of AC power from the grid (AC) to the bus. This is a massive advantage, as it allows buyers to install many more of the inexpensive EVSEs than needed to offer more flexibility for their fleet.

One innovation that really leverages those on-board inverters and, in my opinion, takes BYD’s buses to the next level in a completely new way is a breakthrough project they’re working on with a few federal agencies here in the US to use their buses as a HUGE, distributed grid-scale battery (GSB). Imagine a fleet of 20 or 40 electric buses that are just running their normal routes (with 500 kWh worth of batteries in each) and a hurricane hits, taking out power to the city. City officials can then take their normal city bus fleet, school bus fleet, and local long-distance buses (because they’re all BYD electric buses, right?) and, using the aforementioned on-board inverters, plug them directly into the city’s AC power grid at a predetermined location (hence the advance federal emergency response planning requirement) and restore power to select portions of the city grid for emergency response activities, running off of the juice stored in the buses. This has the potential to not only marry emergency preparedness and city transit, but really takes emergency preparedness to the next level.
Another great feature that showcases the flexibility of electric drive buses, BYD is able to throttle govern their transit buses for safety. Some gas-mobiles are regulated with a governor that ensures the driver doesn’t exceed a speed limit set by the company, agency, or area. That makes sense… so why does BYD throttle govern their buses?
It starts with instant torque in a bus with HUGE motors designed to carry a full load of 60 adults. Let’s remove 59 of those adults and “accidentally” pound the throttle to the floor. Did you feel those front wheels lift off the ground a bit? Yeah, I didn’t either, but you probably did see that single passenger get thrown from his seat to the back of the bus as you peeled rubber away from that stop sign (in a bus!). You get the point. Their buses are insanely powerful, and to ensure that their buses are safe at any speed with any load, they are throttle governed. Phew, that was a mouthful.

Building a BYD Electric Bus

As with most transit bus builds, BYD’s buses are custom jobs from the ground up. There are a few base models, then options upon options to choose from, such as passenger capacity, range, colors, integrated fire suppression, paint jobs, etc. We were able to see quite a few of the variants BYD offers as we walked around the factory.
After the buses are wired up, they move on to the paint booth where they can get decked out with whatever designs the customer spec’d out. We saw a lot of white buses on the assembly line and a few LA metro buses that had more exciting color patterns running around the factory as well.
At this point, the buses look ready to go but are missing the drive mechanics and batteries. The buses are lined up in an assembly line format and these components are added. Batteries used to take up more room in the interior of the buses but recent improvements in battery storage density have allowed BYD to get rid of one of the large battery cabinets, providing more room for passengers and less overall weight. What’s neat here is that the exterior of their buses look almost identical to ‘normal’ city buses. There’s no extra hump or raised floor or much of anything that would give away to passengers that they’re on a cutting edge electric bus generating no emissions … which is exactly the point! These buses look like and run like normal buses…minus all the diesel exhaust, high fuel costs, high maintenance costs and frequent breakdowns.

After the buses are fully assembled, they are run through BYD’s test line where their charging system is tested, then they go for a spin on the in-house dynamometer and are tested for leaks and sound mechanics. From there, they are ready to hit the road.
It’s obvious from seeing the US factory that BYD has put in a ton of effort to perfect their buses and to bring their buses to North America. Where are they going? They have quite a few things going on that I can’t share, so I’ll just leave a few last comments here for you to ponder from what they have already announced:
  1. BYD has announced an aggressive growth strategy for it Lancaster factory over the next 3 years.
  2. BYD has previously announced that it is building electric trucks in China and wants to bring them to America.
  3. BYD’s North American President Stella Li has shared that, as battery prices come down, BYD will be ready to move into the consumer car market in America.

BYD Buses Win Washington Electric Bus Contract

Never heard of BYD? You’re not alone. The Chinese company is big in its home country but less well know elsewhere, especially in the United States. But Warren Buffett is a major stockholder and BYD has built more electric buses than any company in history. It also operates a fleet of electric crossovers in selected US cities as part of local carsharing services, including 200 in Chicago used by Uber drivers.
The Department of Transportation in Washington wrapped up a bid proposal for up to 800 electric buses in 12 different categories in August. BYD buses has been awarded the contract in 10 of those categories. The contract has the potential to be the biggest in US history, since it includes buses from 30 to 60 feet in length for both highway and intra-city applications, as well as long- and short-range on-route charging configurations.
According to Electric Cars Report, BYD is the only bus manufacturer with wireless on-route charging as an option approved by the Washington DOT. This is seen as a visionary move by the state of Washington State, one that clearly establishes it as one of the most environmentally conscious states in the nation. Any transit agency or public institution in Washington, as well as the state of Oregon, is now able to procure electric buses from the RFP, which will greatly simplify the procurement process.
BYD employs more than 15,000 R&D engineers. It has developed a proprietary iron-phosphate battery which boasts the only 12-year battery warranty in the industry. Combined with BYD’s own in-wheel hub motors and regenerative braking system, the BYD battery electric bus reportedly offers the lowest lifecycle cost of ownership. It is very quiet and ensures a comfortable ride without vibrations, jerks, or the noise associated with conventional buses and combustion engines. The bus can also drive for more than 155 miles even in heavy city traffic on a single charge.
As of April 1st, 2015, BYD bus fleets have completed more than 50 million miles of “in revenue service” and have been evaluated by more than 150 cities in 36 countries around the world.
Barcelona’s transit agency director told Gas2 director Zachary Shahan in 2013 that BYD electric buses seemed to have the same lifecycle cost of a conventional diesel bus… but without all of the health and climate problems.

BYD E5 EV Spotted, Claims 150 Mile Range

Several years ago Chinese automaker Build Your Dreams (BYD) committed wholly to green vehicles, specifically EVs and plug-in hybrids. Sales haven’t taken off as fast as the company hoped, but battery technology may have caught up with BYD’s ambitions, with spy shots revealing a vehicle a vehicle that promises 150 miles of driving range per charge.
ChinaCarNews caught these shots of the BYD E5, an all-electric sedan that may look rather boring, but when it debuts in April at the Shanghai Auto Show, it will supposedly offer a driving range of 150 miles per charge at an extremely affordable price. That’s about twice the driving range of cars like the Nissan LEAF, and while its 107 horsepower motor isn’t going to draw any comparisons to the Tesla P85D, it will be good enough for a top speed of around 100 MPH. Plus, it is expected to only cost around $22,000, though whether that’s before or after China’s many generous subsidies and tax breaks, the article doesn’t specify.
China is going all-in with electric cars in an effort to clean up its filthy air. While the BYD E5 may not be a sexy EV like those from more established automakers, it can go farther, and for less money, than many competitors from the likes of Nissan, BMW and GM. The Toyota Prius isn’t particularly pretty either, but it sells better than any other hybrid out there. Looks matter, but so do things like efficiency, and of course price. GM is promising 200 miles of driving range for $30,000 with the Bolt EV, but for almost $10,000 less, the E5 sacrifices just 50 miles of range. Some people would surely save the extra money and go with the cheaper car.

BYD Gets Record Setting Order Of EVs

BYD, maker of electric cars, buses, and taxis, has received a company record order of 3,000 EVs from Hangzhou, a Chinese city with a population of some 2.5 million people.
Hangzhou is located 110 miles southwest of Shanghai, and its 2.5 million peoplewill certainly make good use of the EVs supplied by BYD. China has been moving to increase ownership of EVs due to serious environmental concerns over sun-hiding smog that is causing a huge number of health problems.
BYD Auto was founded in 2003 and began production of their fully electric vehicles in 2008. The decision to dip into the EV market was initially a good choice for BYD, attracting a $230 million invest by none other thanWarren Buffet. By 2009 the six year old company had already sold over 448,400 cars in China and began exporting cars to Africa, South American, and the Middle East.
In its home market, however, BYD has faced a skeptical Chinese public kept at bay by high costs and a lack of charging infrastructure. Increased benefits from the government and investment by private enterprisescould tip the tide in favor of EVs though. China would certainly benefit from some zero emissions vehicles.

BYD Delivers First Buses In California

With the delivery of two electric buses to the Antelope Valley Transit Authority, BYD has become the first Chinese automaker to build a vehicle in America. That’s a big milestone, and all the bigger because those vehicles are all-electric buses vying for big transit contracts from coast to coast.
Rated at 155 miles per charge, the BYD electric buses are quiet-running and zero emissions, two great selling for taxpayers. Municipal governments, meanwhile, could stand to save big bucks on costly diesel fuel that mosts buses currently use, which is why Los Angeles has already signed a contract to take delivery of up to 25 of the electric buses. BYD had a $12.1 million with Long Beach, but it was canceled over a contract clause, forcing BYD to re-submit its bid.
A minor setback which hasn’t slowed the Chinese automaker’s efforts to start building vehicles in America, and while the initial workforce consists of just 60 people, BYD hopes to employ 200 people by the end of 2015. Destined for service in the Antelope Valley Transit Authority, mostly in the city of Lancaster just north of L.A.
It was many moons ago that BYD first announced its American ambitions, and they’ve been delayed time and again, so imagine the collective sigh of relief at the delivery of these first buses. Whether consumers are ready for Chinese-built electric vehicles remains to be seen, but for now at least, EV buses are on the menu.

BYD electric bus in service trial in Rio de Janeiro

Fetranspor and Rio Bus, the public transportation companies for the state and city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and BYD launched a BYD battery-electric bus into service this week. This is the first pure-electric bus to launch in Rio and is running now on line 249 (Water-Santa Carioca) operated by Matias, the leader of the Consortium Internorte.
The partnership, which aims to test the bus on a regular line for one month, has the support from the City Government through the City Department of Transportation, and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (a network of megacities committed to taking actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions) and is currently chaired by Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes.
Rio is one of the three cities in Brazil to test the BYD electric buses from BYD (São Paulo and Salvador have done successful tests already).
Companies in Rio have tested other alternative fuel buses including hybrids, diesel from sugar cane, biodiesel, also CNG buses.
Besides Brazil, the BYD electric bus has been tested since 2011 in several cities around the world such as Los Angeles and New York (USA), Bogota (COL), London (GB), Copenhagen (DEN) and Oranjestad (Aruba). BYD is testing the buses under different traffic and road conditions, terrain, elevations and temperatures to improve bus design.
The BYD K9 model uses BYD’s lithium iron phosphate battery. The batteries are contained in three areas: on the roof, besides the back axles and over the front wheels of the vehicle. The electric motors are built into the wheels of the rear axle, making it more efficient for passenger loading since the floor height can be dropped lower than where conventional bus axles are. The configuration allows recovering energy when braking.
According to BYD, its energy consumption is equivalent to 1.2-1.4 kWh/km, which is around 75% more efficient than conventional buses, making it a lower operating and maintenance costs. The bus holds up to 80 passengers, 29 seated and 50 standing besides the placeholder for wheelchair users, equal to conventional buses.
