Volkswagen showcases “Think blue. Factory.” sustainable production concepts at Hannover Messe

At Hannover Messe 2011, Volkswagen is focusing on the link between ecologically sustainable mobility and resource-efficient production processes, and is presenting its “Think Blue. Factory.” concept to make production more efficient and conserve resources more effectively.

VW gathers efficient, low-emission technologies and powertrains under the BlueMotionTechnologies label. The “Think Blue.” principle presented in 2010 transfers this approach to other areas of the company and everyday situations and is intended to provide employees and customers with motivation to act in an environmentally responsible way.

Responsible mobility goes hand in hand with environmentally compatible production. This is why Volkswagen is forging ahead with its “Think blue. Factory.” concept. Our aim is to significantly enhance energy efficiency in production at the same time as markedly reducing emissions and the use of resources.

To achieve this aim, Volkswagen will implement additional efficiency measures in all production units. These include new press technology with energy savings of up to 40%, improved insulation for plant buildings, programs to shut advanced robot systems down during breaks and the use of high-efficiency motors.

In addition, Volkswagen is placing greater emphasis on diversified energy supplies. The latest examples of action being taken around the world include participation in the construction of offshore wind farms off the North Sea coast and a new Volkswagen hydropower plant in Brazil that will cover about 18% of the energy demand for Volkswagen plants in the country.

At the Volkswagen stand at Hannover Messe, trade fair visitors can take an interactive virtual tour of a car production plant and explore the principle of ecologically sustainable production. The mode of operation of a flexible production line for vehicles with different drive systems ranging from internal combustion engines to electric motors is also being demonstrated.

Volkswagen is also featuring the new Bulli, an electric-powered compact car study making its German premiere in Hannover. The electric motor receives its power from a 40 kWh lithium ion battery, allowing a range of up to 300 kilometers.

Hitachi resumes battery production for Buick LaCrosse, Regal eAssist models

Three Hitachi Automotive factories, including a plant that makes lithium-ion batteries for General Motors Co., have resumed output after being damaged in Japan's March 11 earthquake.

The three factories are:

•Hitachi Vehicle Energy Ltd. in Ibaraki Prefecture, the supplier of lithiom-ion batteries for General Motors Co. Hitachi makes the batteries for the 2012 Buick LaCrosse and Regal, said GM spokesman Kevin Kelly. The batteries will run the eAssist mild hybrid technology.

The eAssist system uses stop-start technology and an electric motor boost to help the car accelerate. GM says the system will provide 25 percent better fuel economy than the 2011 models.

•Hitachi Automotive Systems' Sawa Works in Ibaraki Prefecture, which makes engine control and fuel system components, as well as motors and inverters for hybrid vehicles.

•Hitachi Automotive Systems' Fukushima Works in Fukushima Prefecture, previously known as Tokico, which makes suspension components.

"The assembly lines have started, but it's not to 100 percent," said Hitachi America spokesman Mickey Takeuchi. "They have electricity and water and gas."

Atsushi Konno, a spokesman for Hitachi in Tokyo, said the plants are running at 70 percent capacity this week as quality assurance checks are conducted.

The plants should be at full capacity next week, Konno said. He declined to give any information regarding Hitachi's customers but did say the Fukushima plant mostly provides for the Japanese auto industry, while Sawa supplies automakers around the world.

Pinnacle Engines Introduces its Ultra-Efficient Combustion Engine

Pinnacle Engines today unveiled plans to commercialize a breakthrough ultra-efficient engine by 2013. The new engine design enables significant reductions in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions without increasing vehicle cost. Pinnacle also announced it has raised $13.5 million in venture funding from NEA, Bessemer Venture Partners and Infield Capital.

Advancing the Internal Combustion Engine
While electrification of the worldwide vehicle fleet presents a promising long-term solution, the costs of wide-scale deployment are high. As a result, the global vehicle fleet in 2050 is expected to rely mostly on the internal combustion engine as its prime mover.

Leveraging years of research and development and more than 500 hours of dynamometer testing, Pinnacle Engines' ultra-efficient engine is based on a four-stroke, spark-ignited (SI), opposed-piston, sleeve-valve architecture. It achieves 30 – 50% better fuel economy in various drive cycle comparisons without the large cost penalty normally associated with dramatic fuel economy improvement. The performance of the Pinnacle Engines design has been independently verified by FEV, Inc., a globally recognized leader in engine development and a Pinnacle Engines development partner.

The core of Pinnacle's technology resides in its unique engine architecture and its Cleeves Cycle. The Cleeves Cycle operates on the Otto cycle (constant volume combustion) or Diesel cycle (constant pressure combustion) depending on operating conditions. Additional efficiency improvements will be realized through incorporation of variable valve timing, direct injection, turbocharging, and Pinnacle's own low-cost variable compression ratio mechanism. The result is a fundamentally more fuel efficient and scalable engine design, and one that is compatible with most fuels including gasoline, diesel, natural gas, propane and their biofuel replacements (e.g., ethanol).

The patented Pinnacle Engines architecture and the innovative Cleeves Cycle are the culmination of over 100 years of combustion engine design, and forty years of research and innovation by founder and CTO Monty Cleeves – a long-time innovator in multiple fields, and a dedicated student of engine design. Global Opportunity
The company is in the process of commercializing its technology through a joint development and licensing agreement with an Asian vehicle OEM. Production is slated to commence in Q1 2013. Further developments, including plans for expansion into the global automotive market, will be revealed later this year.
