PICTURES SURFACE OF TESLA ROADSTER READY TO LAUNCH

When Elon Musk promised to launch “the silliest thing imaginable” into space on the first launch of Space X’ Falcon Heavy rocket back in April, nobody really took him seriously. When rumors surfaced that he’d be launching his personal Tesla Roadster into Mars orbit, even Musk laughed. When pictures surfaced on Reddit of the Midnight Cherry Tesla Roadster mounted on the Falcon’s payload pod last night, though, it signaled that things were about to get weird.

This new Falcon Heavy next-gen rocket should be capable of lifting more than a 140,00 pound payload into low Earth orbit, or a 37,000 payload all the way to Mars. As such, the thing is more than capable of blasting the Tesla into Martian orbit … but, really!?

… but I still don’t believe him. Of course, I have a long history of questioning Tesla’ motives. Despite being demonstrably wrong most of the time, though, I still can’t shake the feeling that this is all just a crazy PR stunt. Even if that’s all it is- I have to give Tesla that it’s an effective PR stunt, to be sure! What do you guys think? Do you think he’s actually going to do it? Tesla Roadster — In Depth

In 2005, rumors started to spread in the automotive world about an electric sports car powered by thousands of laptop batteries. The whole idea sounded preposterous. Who would build such a car? The batteries would weigh so much, the car would probably have only modest acceleration and handle more like a truck than a nimble two-seater with sporting pretensions.

Meet the Tesla Roadster

The Tesla Roadster is a Lotus Elise chassis married to a lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor driving the rear wheels through a one-speed transaxle. Tesla contracted with Lotus to provide a total of 2,500 cars manufactured without a drivetrain. Ultimately, a total of 2,450 Roadsters were sold between 2008 and 2012.
The battery pack — which Tesla calls the Energy Storage System — is comprised of 6,831 lithium-ion cells arranged into 11 sheets connected in series. Each sheet is made up of 9 bricks connected in series, and each “brick” contains 69 lithium-ion cells (“18650” lithium-ion cells) connected in parallel. An 18650 battery cell is cylindrical in shape, approximately 18 millimeters in diameter, and 65 millimeters in length.
The 18650 cells were selected because they were readily available and reasonably affordable.
The Tesla Roadster was shown to the public for the first time on July 19, 2006, in Santa Monica, California. It was an invitation event for 350 people held at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica airport. The car was also featured at the San Francisco auto show on November 18 that same year. It went on to be part of international auto shows in Los Angeles, Detroit, and Frankfurt, Germany.

Production Begins in 2008

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took delivery of the first production car in February 2008. That car had an AC induction motor rated at 248 horsepower, 200 lb-ft of torque, and a two speed transmission. Later in 2008, the Roadster 1.5 was offered with a single speed gearbox. In 2009, the Roadster 2.0 offered a motor with 288 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. A Sport version had the same horsepower but 295 lb-ft of torque. A Special Edition Roadster 2.5 was offered in 2011. Its specifications were the same but it featured special paint and trim as production drew to a close.
The Sport was the fastest Roadster of all. It galloped to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, 0.2 tenths faster than its siblings. According to the EPA, the Roadster had a range of 244 miles and was rated at 120 MPGe, meaning its efficiency was equivalent to a gasoline-powered car that got 120 miles per gallon.
Tesla’s contract with Lotus ended in December 2011. Production ended less than a month later due to a lack of chassis available for Tesla to convert. Sales in the US ended in August 2011, when regulations regarding two-stage air bags went into effect. The Lotus Elise was not engineered with the advanced airbags in mind and making the necessary modifications was deemed to be too expensive.

Origins of the Tesla Roadster

The car that came to be known as the Tesla Roadster actually traces its heritage back to 1994 and a company called AC Propulsion located in San Dimas, California, approximately 30 miles east of Los Angeles. It developed the AC-150, a 200 horsepower integrated drive system for compact to mid-size passenger cars. The key to the AC-150 powertrain was the use of an AC electric motor. It was the kind of device envisioned by Nikola Tesla before his death in 1943.
Motors that run on alternating current are lighter and less expensive to build than the direct current motors favored by manufacturers of subway cars and locomotives. They require an inverter, however. That is a device that converts the DC power stored in batteries to the AC current needed to operate the motor. Inverter technology in 1994 was rudimentary compared to what it is today.
In 1997, AC Propulsion fitted a Piontek Sportech kit car with its AC-150 system. The Sportech consisted of a fiberglass body mounted on a reinforced steel space frame with double wishbone independent suspension and rack and pinion steering. It called the car the tzero. In scientific circles, the lower case “t” is often used as a shorthand notation for time. “Zero” connotes a beginning. In other words, the tzero was intended to be the first real electric car and the first car in the electric car revolution. To say that AC Propulsion was ahead of its time is a gross understatement.

From Lead-Acid to Lithium-Ion Batteries

The original tzero used 26 lead-acid batteries. Although AC Propulsion intended to put the car into production, only three were ever built. The car was simply too expensive for mass production. In early 2003, Martin Eberhard approached AC Propulsion and requested they replace the lead-acid batteries with a battery pack made up of 6,800 lithium-ion laptop batteries.
Is it a coincidence that the Tesla Roadster used a battery pack with 6,832 lithium-ion batteries? No, it is not. Eberhard went on to become a co-founder of Tesla Motors in 2003, along with Marc Tarpenning. The conversion was carried out in the spring of 2003. When it was competed, the car weighed 500 lbs less and its top speed increased from 90 mph to 140 mph. Eberhard then borrowed the car to show it to potential investors in Tesla Motors.

Enter Elon Musk & JB Straubel

One of the people Eberhard showed the car to was JB Straubel. He in turn showed it to Elon Musk. Musk, who made his first fortune as the father of PayPal, decided to invest $7.4 million into Tesla Motors. He became heavily involved in the company and used the tzero to promote his dream of building premium electric cars.
Eberhard and Tarpenning envisioned starting with less expensive cars that mainstream buyers could afford but Musk was adamant that the best strategy was to start by building premium luxury cars that would appeal to wealthy opinion makers. Eventually, the two split with Musk over what direction the company should take. They cashed out their Tesla stock and went off to pursue other ventures. Musk took over as CEO and Straubel became CTO, positions they hold to this day.

Comparing the Tesla Roadster to the Lotus Elise

Although the Tesla Roadster is based on the Lotus Elise, only about 6% of the parts are interchangeable between the two cars. The Roadster is built on a chassis that has been lengthened by 2″. Only the windshield, airbags, some tires, some dashboard parts, and suspension components are common to both. The Roadster’s single-speed gearbox was made in Detroit to Tesla’s specifications by BorgWarner in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Brakes were made by Siemens in Germany.
Roadsters for the North America market were sent to Menlo Park, California, for final assembly. Cars for customers elsewhere were completed at a facility in Wymondham near the Lotus factory in Hethel.

The Top Gear Controversy

In late summer of 2008, the BBC show Top Gear tested two production versions of the Tesla Roadster at its test facility. The Roadster proved to be faster in a straight line than the standard Lotus Elise. At one point, Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear’s most notorious bad boy can be heard exclaiming, “God Almighty! Wave goodbye to the world of dial-up, and say hello to the world of broadband motoring!” He then remarked, “This car is biblically quick!”
Sadly, the testers found the car to be lacking a bit in cornering prowess — not unexpected since it was weighted down with 1,000 lbs of batteries carried high in the chassis. Top Gear reported the car only went 55 miles on a battery charge during its admittedly rigorous use. At one point, a Roadster was filmed being pushed off the track, suggesting it had run out of power.
Elon Musk was furious and Tesla actually sued the BBC for libel but ultimately lost the case in the British courts. In the end, the controversy brought Tesla a world of free publicity. Public awareness of the Tesla Roadster specifically and electric cars in general can be traced directly to that episode of Top Gear and the controversy that followed. As politicians are fond of saying, “Write whatever you want about me. Just make sure you spell my name right.”

A Battery Upgrade & A New Roadster

Tesla says it has partnered with LG Chem to develop an upgraded battery for the original Roadster. Lithium-ion battery technology has come a long way in the past decade or more. The new battery pack, which costs $29,000 and has 40% more capacity, is rated at 80 kWh versus the original 52 kWh. The extra capacity gives the Roadster enough range to go from Los Angeles to San Francisco on a single charge.
The company says the cost is high because the new battery packs are built by hand at the rate of only one or two a week. Removing the old battery and installing the new one is a labor-intensive process that includes a new power controller and associated electronics. Roadster owners can also elect a separate upgrade that adds new, more aerodynamically efficient bodywork and low-rolling-resistance tires to further boost range.
Tesla says it intends to offer an entirely new Roadster based on a shortened version of the Model S chassis for model year 2019. No other details are known at this time.

What is the Tesla Roadster Like to Drive?

The Tesla Roadster was priced at $98,000 in 2008. That number had risen to $109,000 a year later. Did owners get value for their money? In November of 2009, Jason Cammisa, west coast editor for Automobile Magazine, spent a week driving one. He reported the car “explodes off the line, pulling like a small jet plane. It’s like driving a Lamborghini with a big V-12 revved over 6000 rpm at all times, waiting to pounce — without the noise, vibration, or misdemeanor arrest for disturbing the peace.”
Later he took the car to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, to put it through its paces on track. He praised the car for its robustness, saying it “wins the Coolest Car I’ve Ever Driven award. Why? Despite the flat-out sprints, the drag racing, the donuts, the top speed runs, and dicing through traffic like there’s a jet pack strapped to the trunk, Pacific Gas and Electric — which generated power for the Tesla — released into the atmosphere the same amount of carbon dioxide as would a gasoline powered car getting 99 mpg.”
He added, “And the Roadster didn’t break. It didn’t smoke, lock up, freeze, or experience flux-capacitor failure. Over the past ten decades, no company has been able to reinvent the car — not General Motors with the EV1, not Toyota with the Prius. And now, a bunch of dudes from Silicon Valley have created an electric car that really works — as both an environmental fix and a speed fix.”
You aren’t likely to find any higher praise for a car than that.

1300 HP Toroidion Electric Supercar Debuts - VIDEO



First teased back in February, the Finnish Toroidion was supposed to be a 1300+ horsepower hyper-exotic capable of running down anything this side of an NHRA Funny Car without burning a drop of gas or oil. When the first, darkened images appeared back then, it was easy to dismiss the project as little more than typical, hyper-exotic vaporware.
It is, apparently, more than that.
The 1MW Toroidion super car was recently shown to Russia’s RT News, and it seems to be a well-sorted proof of concept, at least! The prototype features smooth, tight-fitting composite body panels with plenty of stylish (if somewhat derivative) curves, a slick, motorsports-inspired interior, and a potentially decent range with this much battery power behind it. The Finnish ride also offers rapid battery-swap technology built in, which could give it something of an advantage over cars like the CPO Tesla Roadsters in the event that the concept ever reaches production. And, you know, that they sell enough of them to put battery swap stations pretty much everywhere.
Yeah, you know what? The Supercharger thing Tesla’s doing is much, much smarter- even if 20-30 minutes is a long time to wait for your car to gas up.

Tesla Loss Of Battery Range Less Than Feared

Research from Plug In America and others shows Tesla owners don’t need to be overly concerned about battery loss. In 2013, PIA did a study of Tesla Roadster battery longevity using data from 126 Roadsters driven a total 3.2 million miles. The study concluded that the typical Roadster would still have 80-85 percent battery capacity after 100,000 miles (though some Roadster owners have lost much more). The Model S has a superior battery management system to the one found on the Roadster, so it stands to reason that battery degradation should be even less.
And according to a Dutch engineering professor, it is. Based on 84 data points from the 85-kWh version of the Model S and six from 60-kWh cars, the study concludes that the Model S will retain about 94 percent of its capacity after 50,000 miles, with losses thereafter shrinking to about 1 percent per 30,000 miles. That means that after 100,000 miles, the typical Model S is projected to retain about 92 percent of its battery capacity and range.
Tom Saxton, chief science officer for Plug In America, says a Model S85 is projected to retain about 90 percent battery capacity until 86,000 miles according to Green Car Reports. According to Saxton’s data, the S60 version, whose smaller battery must undergo more charge/discharge cycles to travel the same distance, retains 90 percent capacity to about 67,000 miles. The high-mileage car in the ongoing study had 92,000 miles as of last summer and still retained 92 percent of battery capacity.
While there is no data or scientific evidence, many electric car owners believe that not charging their battery to 100% capacity regularly prolongs battery life. The same goes for not overdoing it with high powered DC fast chargers. As the saying goes, it’s true if you believe it’s true.

Tesla Roadster 3.0 Prototype Goes 340 Miles On One Charge

Last year Elon Musk promised an upgrade to the battery of the Tesla Roadster, and in December the first details of the “Roadster 3.0” came out. On the one-year anniversary of the first Tesla cross-country rally last year, an upgraded Tesla Roadster drove for 340 miles on a single charge from San Jose to the Santa Monica pier, without plugging in once.
Thanks to battery cell enhancements, aerodynamic improvements, and low rolling resistance tires, Tesla has been able to improve driving range by about 40 to 50% on the Roadster over the official 245 mile EPA-rated range. According to the official Tesla blog (which just got a much-needed upgrade), the team of two drivers completed the six hour journey from San Jose to the Santa Monica pier covering a total of 340 miles at “around the speed limit” and still managed to pull in with 20 miles remaining on the battery pack.
While not quite the 400 miles Elon Musk had initially asserted, it’s a sizable improvement, giving the Roadster a lot more viability in daly driving, and about 100 miles more of driving range than the 85 kWh Model S. Alas, Model S owners hoping for a bump in range had better not get their hopes up, as the Roadster upgrade takes improvements from the Model S and retroactively improves the original Tesla vehicle. As the disclaimer at the top of the blog post reminds us, there are no expected range increases for the Model S anytime soon.
However, given that Tesla has a habit of upgrading their vehicles, and that the battery packs are easily swappable, a 500-mile Model S isn’t out of the question. One day.

Now Is A Great Time To Buy A Tesla Roadster

On Christmas day Elon Musk announced that a new 400-mile battery pack upgrade would be offered to Tesla Roadster owners, giving it even more driving range than the Model S. As it turns out, now is a great time to buy a used Roadster, as one example sold on eBay for less than $55,000…about what you’d pay to buy a Toyota RAV4 EV (if you could find one, that is). It’s a great time to buy a Tesla, Roadster that is.
So what’s a $100,000 Tesla Roadster doing selling for about half its original price? One word friends…depreciation. It’s a bitch, especially when you buy a high-end vehicle like a Tesla. Also keep in mind that this was a 2008 Tesla Roadster, built in 2007, which means its already over eight years old! All in all, that’s about what one should expect to pay for a Roadster these days, even a Certified Pre-Owned one from Tesla itself.
This particular Roadster just about 11,700 miles on it so far and comes with all the home charging equipment needed to plug it in. It’s also got the adjustable suspension upgrade and the hardtop, two items you definitely want to go with your Roadster. With only 2,400 of the first-gen Teslas sold though, this is an item that could actually appreciate significantly in value one day down the road, especially if the electric automaker becomes a truly global player. And now with Tesla offering a 400-mile upgrade, you won’t be stuck driving old hat technology for much longer.
This is a future classic at a bargain price, and one day Tesla Roadsters will be prized by car collectors. I guarantee it.

As foretold earlier this week, Tesla has rolled out the prototype “Roadster 3.0 Package“.
With precious few days left in 2014 to make good on an earlier promise to update the battery technology found in the Roadster, which first hit the market in 2008, Elon Musk tweeted that all would be revealed after Christmas.
That day turned out to be today, as Tesla Motors announced that current Roadster owners (~2,500 of them) are looking at being able to swap out their old batteries  (53 kWh) for new ones with improved technology providing 70 kWh of power.
In addition, and also somewhat unexpected, a Roadster 3.0 retrofit aero kit is part of the package that will make the 2 seater 15% more efficient slipping through the air, along with a new available set of tires, wheel bearings etc. that will aid the car in achieving more range.
How much more range is now on tap? the company says to expect 40-50% more miles.  The original iteration of Roadster had been rated by the EPA at 244 miles.   Under the right set of circumstance, the company says one could expect to get more than 400 miles.
Tesla will demo the long-range Roadster 3.0 in early 2015.  We expect this prototype package to be identical to that which is offered to owners in 2015 (otherwise why do it?).   Pricing has yet to be announced.  Tesla also says this will not be the last of the upgrades available to owners in the future.
Our own off-the-cuff estimate would be that, given the limit amount of cars to potentially upgrade, Tesla doesn’t want to price the retrofit too exorbitantly but also doesn’t want to lose money either.  $25,000-$30,000 sounds about right to us.

The Roadster 3.0 package applies what we’ve learned in Model S to Roadster. No new Model S battery pack or major range upgrade is expected in the near term.
Battery technology has continued a steady improvement in recent years, as has our experience in optimizing total vehicle efficiency through Model S development. We have long been excited to apply our learning back to our first vehicle, and are thrilled to do just that with the prototype Roadster 3.0 package. It consists of three main improvement areas.
1. Batteries
The original Roadster battery was the very first lithium ion battery put into production in any vehicle. It was state of the art in 2008, but cell technology has improved substantially since then. We have identified a new cell that has 31% more energy than the original Roadster cell. Using this new cell we have created a battery pack that delivers roughly 70kWh in the same package as the original battery.
2. Aerodynamics
The original Roadster had a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.36. Using modern computational methods we expect to make a 15% improvement, dropping the total Cd down to 0.31 with a retrofit aero kit.
3. Rolling Resistance
The original Roadster tires have a rolling resistance coefficient (Crr) of 11.0 kg/ton. New tires that we will use on the Roadster 3.0 have a Crr of roughly 8.9 kg/ton, about a 20% improvement. We are also making improvements in the wheel bearings and residual brake drag that further reduce overall rolling resistance of the car.
Summary
Combining all of these improvements we can achieve a predicted 40-50% improvement on range between the original Roadster and Roadster 3.0. There is a set of speeds and driving conditions where we can confidently drive the Roadster 3.0 over 400 miles. We will be demonstrating this in the real world during a non-stop drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the early weeks of 2015.
We are confident that this will not be the last update the Roadster will receive in the many years to come.

Tesla Roadster Upgrade Coming Next Week

Earlier this year Elon Musk mentioned that an upgrade for Tesla Roadster owners was in the works, and the popular theory is it will be 400+ mile battery pack. In a recent tweet Musk revealed that the Tesla Roadster upgrade would be revealed next week, having been delayed by several “crisis issues” that required immediate attention.
What are those issues? Musk can’t say, though one could infer that these “crisis issues” have to do with the again-delayed Tesla Model X. Musk also just revealed that the first battery swapping pilot project would be open for business next week as well, making good on two big promises he made earlier in the year. Better late than never, and he certainly addressed a couple of issues I was starting to take with the man.
As far as the upgrade for the Tesla Roadster, a new battery pack makes the most sense. Some Roadster owners have complained of diminishing range levels, and while the 245+ miles of EPA-rated range is second only to the Model S, the 53 kWh battery pack leaves room for improvement. Potentially shoehorning the 85 kWh battery pack would almost certainly deliver 400 miles of real-world range.
Another possibility is the addition of the Supercharging capability to the Roadster, adding the ability to travel across the U.S. on free energy (courtesy of Tesla). A third possibility is additional battery armor, same as what the Model S received, though there haven’t been any reports of battery fires relating to the Roadster as far as I know.
For Tesla Roadster owners, this belated Christmas gift is welcome news indeed, whatever it is. With all the hubbub around the Model S these days, it’s easy to forget the car that came before it. Unless you’re Elon Musk that is.

New Tesla Roadster Coming in 2017 … Maybe

Tesla launched its brand with a simply styled, brutally fast convertible called the Tesla Roadster. It was based heavily on the featherweight Lotus Elise roadster, which may or may not become the car you see, above: the on-again, off-again 2015 Lotus Elise concept.
Now, rumors are starting to circulate about an all-new Tesla Roadster coming in 2017. All of which begs the question, “Will Tesla’s next Roadster, then, be based on Lotus’ next Elise?”
All the same, an updated Tesla Roadster is expected to be one of four – four! – all-new Tesla models that (the usually reliable) Autobild magazine claims will be released by 2017, just in time to carry a “2018″ model year designation. We already know about the hot-selling Model X SUV/crossover and Model 3 “mainstream” sedan made to take on the Chevy Volt PHEV and Nissan Leaf, but Autobild is claiming that, along with the new Tesla Roadster, a new compact city car – similar in size and concept to the BMW i3 – will be joining the lineup, as well.
With a compact, a pair of sedans, an SUV, and – now – an updated sports car, Tesla could become the first full-line, all-electric carmaker in … maybe 100 years? Something like that.

Tesla Roadster Could Get An Upgrade Later This Year

It’s been three years since the last Tesla Roadster was built, but Elon Musk isn’t done with it yet. At a recent Tesla shareholders conference, Elon Musk said that Tesla would do “something cool” for the Roadster. Way to leave it open-ended.
Musk has gone on record as saying that he wishes they’d done the original Tesla Roadster differently, as they had to re-engineer most of the Lotus Elise body. Tesla only sold about 2,300 of the $100,000 Roadsters, and with it being three years since production ended, nobody was expecting any sort of upgrade.
But that’s how Tesla does, apparently, and while we lack specifics, it isn’t hard to guess what this “something cool” might be. Being all electric, Tesla can tweak and tune the Roadster’s performance with a simple software upgrade. This upgrade could unlock more driving range, improve charging, or amp up the power output, plain and simple.
Will this upgrade be free? I don’t know, but it’d set a new precedent for customer support and service post-sale. Free upgrades for an out-of-production car that won’t be replaced for another five years is unheard of in the auto industry. But for Tesla, it’s as easy as downloading a song.

Detroit Electric SP:01 Sports Car Production Begins This Summer

When Tesla Roadster production ceased, the world was suddenly left without a fast, fun, and (comparatively) affordable all-electric sports car. The revival of the Detroit Electric name hopes to change that with the SP:01, a Lotus-based electric coupe that will begin production this summer. In many ways, this is like the Tesla Roadster 2.0…but with a hardtop roof.
Let’s skip all the hyperbole and get straight to the meat and potatoes. The Detroit Electric SP:01 uses a custom made carbon fiber body based on the Lotus Exige, a hardtop version of the Lotus Elise, which underpins the Tesla Roadster. Power comes from two 37 kWh battery packs motivating an AC electric motor that makes 201 horsepower and 166 ft-lbs of torque.
That doesn’t sound like a lot, but its apparently enough power to sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds, the same time as a Tesla. The Detroit Electric also offers between 150 and 180 miles of driving range, depending on how you measure range. Again, this is comparable to the Tesla Roadster.
But there is one key difference that enthusiasts are sure to appreciate between the Detroit Electric and Tesla, and that is the transmission. Where the Tesla uses a one-speed automatic, Detroit Electric will use a 4-speed manual with an optional 5th gear, as well as a two-speed automatic. For my money, the 5-speed is the only way to go in an electric sports car that weighs just 2,400 pounds. Who couldn’t have fun with that?
What this will all come down to, however, is price. With the Tesla Roadster no longer in production, the market for a $100,000 electric sports car is wide open. Sure other companies are offering electric supercars, like Mercedes and Rimac, but those cars cost anywhere from $500,000 to almost a million bucks. Can Detroit make a name for itself…again?

Tesla Roadster Owners Can Trade-In For Model S



Trading in an old car towards a newer one is a popular way to offset some of the new car’s costs…but most niche manufacturers don’t offer their well-off clientele that option. But Tesla Motors will be offering any owners of its Roadster model a chance to trade that car in for a more-versatile Model S sedan.

The Tesla Roadster is without a doubt a cool car, and Tesla managed to sell around 2
,500 Roadsters between 2008 and 2011. Not bad for a $109,000 electric sports car, eh? Alas, since it has no trunk, just two seats, or even power steering, the Tesla Roadster isn’t what you’d call versatile. I imagine Tesla had fielded more than a few questions from Roadster owners looking to upgrade to the Model S sedan. The Tesla Model S can hold as many as seven passengers, has a longer range (if you opt for the 85 kWh battery pack), and will be able to use the new Supercharger network. All good reasons to upgrade.

That is why Tesla will take trade-ins on its Roadster model towards the Model S, while reselling the old Roadster models at its store. Pricing on the used Roadster models will vary, selling for as little as $73,000 for a four-year old model with high mileage.

A newer Roadster model with lower mileage will likely still cost over $90,000. That’s some pretty good resale value, though it isn’t mentioned how much Tesla will offer customers for their old Roadster models. It will probably vary on a case-by-case basis, but it will allow Tesla to offer cheaper Roadster sales, as well as get new buyers behind the wheel of the company’s flagship Model S.

With prices for the Model S ranging from $57,500 to over $100,000, it is even possible that Tesla would write Roadster owners a check…if they opted for the bare-bones Model S. But why would they do that?
