Tesla Collecting More Data As Engineers Quit Autopilot Division

Elon Musk is not a man who is easily deterred. Nearly a year ago, he announced that a Tesla using Autopilot software would drive from Los Angeles to New York City without any input from a human driver before the end of 2017. The end of the year is rapidly approaching, so Father Time is holding Musk’s feet to the fire to make good on his claim.

One facet of Tesla’s Autopilot system — now known as AP 2 — that few people understand or pay much attention to is that every Tesla manufactured since October 2016 has been gathering data from every mile it is driven and sharing that data with the Tesla Mother Ship in Silicon Valley. Operating in “shadow mode,” the system does not directly affect how an individual car operates but it does provide the raw data engineers need to drive progress toward a future in which self driving cars are the norm.
Now, members of the Tesla Motors Club forum indicate that the latest updates to the Autopilot software have expanded the amount of data being collected. After one Model S owner gained access to the data stream being downloaded from his car, Tesla released a statement saying it has begun capturing short video clips from cameras on Model S and Model X vehicles. “We are working hard to improve autonomous safety features and make self-driving a reality for you as soon as possible,” the company now says in its Data Sharing Policy.
The expanded data collection comes at a time when there are rumblings of discontent from within Tesla’s Autopilot division. The Wall Street Journal reported in August that some engineers believe the company is writing checks it can’t cash when it comes to claims about the autonomous driving capability of its cars.
Although the company is careful to say that full autonomy depends on extensive validation of the software and approval from state and federal regulators, it still refers to Autopilot as a “full self-driving” system. That language has led to the departure of several top people who were in charge of Autopilot development for Tesla.
The most recent person to find the exit door was Chris Lattner, a highly respected engineer at Apple who quit after only two months on the job, apparently after butting heads personally with Elon Musk. CNN reported recently that there are still many members of the team who are uncomfortable with the sweeping claims Musk is making for his Autopilot system and the aggressive timetable he has established for its final rollout.
The enhanced data collection suggests the project is still going forward with all possible speed and faster than some within the company are comfortable with. It will be interesting to see whether that transcontinental self driving escape will in fact take place before the end of the year.

Elon Confirms Tesla Model 3 Production Will Begin In July, New Autopilot Software Update In June

When Elon Musk said last year that production of the Tesla Model 3 would begin in July of 2017, everyone rolled their eyes and snickered up their sleeves. After the Model X fiasco, the conventional wisdom said projections by the serial entrepreneur were always wildly optimistic. July? More like December, if past experience is any guide. Even Musk admitted the timetable was ambitious and that actual production by late in the third quarter was more realistic.

On May 21, Musk took to Twitter to tell his faithful followers that a major Autopilot software upgrade for cars with the Hardware 2 package of autonomous driving sensors is coming in June. The HW2 package has been baked into all cars manufactured since last October, but the software to make all the pieces function smoothly together has been a work in progress. Right at this moment, cars with the older HW1 package are still able to do some things the newer cars cannot. Midway through a series of tweets about the new software update, Musk slipped in this little tidbit:

So Model 3 production really will begin in July, just as Elon promised, according to this latest update. How fast will the line move at the beginning? When will the Design Studio that allows people to actually order their cars go live? What options will be available first? All of those questions will have to wait for answers. For now, all we know is the first Model 3 sedans will start rolling off the assembly line in about two months time.
Musk being Musk, he had lots of other things to say. To one owner of an older Model S who said he was anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Model 3, he said, “I’d highly recommend upgrading to latest Model S (which is approx version 4). Only if you really want a smaller sedan, should you get a 3.” The reference to a “version 4” reinforces one of the advantages that comes with owning a Tesla — no annual model changes. The cars evolve; they do not become obsolete.
Musk has been actively working to temper people’s expectations for the Model 3 for a few months, saying the car is a smaller, simpler car with less techno-features. His message is that the Model S is like a BMW 7 Series sedan, and the Model 3 will be more like the BMW 3 Series. Both are fine cars, but they are built to appeal to different audiences.
He also put the kibosh (again) on any hopes that people with older cars could upgrade them to the new Hardware 2. “There’s just no way. Hundreds of parts and most of wiring harness would have to be replaced. Would cost more to retrofit than trading in.”
What about that software update? What is that all about? Musk tweeted, “Excited about the Tesla Autopilot software release rolling out next month. New control algorithm feels as smooth as silk.” Some owners have complained that the Autopilot on their HW2 equipped cars does not operate as smoothly as they would like. “Yeah, control algorithm is safe, but unpleasant. New one is even safer, but super smooth,” Musk says.
Here are a few other key points from Musk’s most recent Twitter blast: Parallel parking and automatic rain sensing wipers will be part of the June software update for cars with HW2 package. Those features are already available to drivers of cars with the first-generation sensor package, so the new update should bring the two into parity with each other. Musk promised an improved web browser would also be part of the upgrade.
A cross-country autonomous driving demonstration run from LA to NYC continues to be planned for later this year. “Still on for end of year. Just software limited. Any Tesla car with HW2 (all cars built since Oct last year) will be able to do this.” What Musk is saying somewhat indirectly is that all cars with the HW2 sensor package will be capable of full Level 5 autonomy once state and federal regulators give their approval and the demo run would be carefully controlled so as not to run afoul and any legal restrictions.
Finally, Musk was asked about when Teslas would be available in India. “Maybe I’m misinformed, but I was told that 30% of parts must be locally sourced and the supply doesn’t yet exist in India to support that.”
India is widely considered to be in the cards for a future Tesla factory. The world is eagerly anticipating where Tesla will build new factories next as the company begins making millions of cars a year, something Musk has suggested it will do by 2020.

China is a given, most observers think, but where in China is a closely guarded secret at present. A factory somewhere in Europe is also widely expected, with several local groups already wooing Tesla with highly creative ad campaigns designed to convince Musk theirs is the best place. Perhaps that news will come in Elon’s next Twitter barrage.

Tesla Model 3 Will Be Ten Times Safer Than Conventional Car

dam Jonas, a stock analyst at Morgan Stanley, released a research note for his clients on Thursday. Jonas has been consistently bullish on the prospects for Tesla stock and currently has a target price of $305 per share on its shares. His latest note says:

“We think the Model 3 will feature hardware and software that provide a level of active safety that could significantly lead all other cars on sale today and could, if the company achieves its goal, be an order of magnitude (i.e. 10x) safer than the average car on the road. According to nearly every OEM we talk to, safety is the number 1 determinant of car purchases. Look for safety to be the ‘ah-hah!’ moment for this car due to launch this year.”
The Model 3 will have all the sensors needed to provide true self driving capability. It will feature a liquid cooled supercomputer manufactured by NVIDIA that is capable of processing 40 times more data than the the first Autopilot computer introduced in October, 2015. Model 3 owners will be able to select enhanced Autopilot or “full self driving capability.” Both are extra cost options but are expected to be popular with Model 3 customers.
Elon Musk tweeted 2 months ago that he expects a 90% reduction in collisions in cars equipped with what the company calls its Hardware 2 package of cameras, forward looking radar, and ultrasonic sensors. The software to manage all those inputs is gradually being optimized to provide enhanced Autopilot operation. Once approved by regulators, it will be capable of true Level 5 autonomous driving.

What most people don’t realize is that data from every mile driven by a Tesla automobile equipped with Autopilot is transmitted wirelessly to the factory, where Tesla engineers use it to improve the self driving software. Tesla has a huge lead over all other car makers because it now has over 4 billion miles of data available to it. Elon Musk says regulators will need access to 20 billion miles worth of data before approving full self driving operation. Once the Model 3 goes on sale, the amount of data Tesla collects daily will sky rocket, bringing the day when true self driving operation can begin closer to reality.
Jonas had one other thing to be bullish about. The Model 3 is a sedan. The market for sedans is falling rapidly as customers flock to SUVs and crossover vehicles. Tesla is already working on an SUV version of the Model 3 which will be known as the Model Y. Whether it will come with the iconic falcon wing doors of the Model X is still a matter of conjecture, but Jonas believes the Model Y will be the best selling Tesla of all.
“We believe the small SUV segment will eventually be the largest segment in the world across all OEMs,” Jonas wrote. “We also expect Model Y to be at the center of an on-demand ride sharing service (“Tesla Mobility”) due to its larger passenger compartment, luggage space, and modular seat configuration.” If Jonas is correct, his target price of $305 per share may be too low.

Elon Musk Tweets Tesla Software 8.1 Update Due Next Week

The death of Joshua Brown on a Florida highway last spring rocked the world of Elon Musk and Tesla. Suddenly, the highly touted Autopilot system didn’t seem so reliable. NHTSA opened an investigation into the accident. Germany’s minister of transportation called Autopilot a menace on the highway. The long working relationship between Tesla and MobliEye blew up into an embarrassing public spat. Tesla blamed MobilEye’s camera. MobilEye blamed Tesla software.

Prior to that fatal accident, Tesla’s Autopilot relied on a forward facing camera as its primary means of gathering information about the outside world. After the accident, Musk and company ripped up the Autopilot playbook and made the forward looking radar the primary input device. Tesla engineers even figured out how to bounce radar signals under and around a car in front to determine if there was a dangerous situation taking place up the road.
In October, Tesla stopped building cars with the original Autopilot hardware suite and started installing what it called Hardware 2 on all cars built at the factory in Fremont, California. But there was a problem. The new hardware package required all new software to make the car function correctly in Autopilot mode. Tesla had accumulated many millions of miles worth of driving data from the old system but had relatively little data with which to write the code for the new system. As a result, owners of earlier cars had more functionality from their Autopilot systems than owners of newer cars.
Elon Musk said Version 8.1 of the Tesla software would be available last December. It wasn’t. Then he said it would be available in January. It wasn’t. February came and went. Earlier this month, he tweeted that the upgrade was coming in about 10 days.

Finally this week, Elon tweeted that the upgrade would be ready next week, probably on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Once the upgrade is ready and downloaded, owners of Teslas built since last October should finally have an Autopilot system that is as good or better than the original. Eventually, once enough data has been collected with the new system, cars with the Hardware 2 package should be capable of fully autonomous driving — something earlier cars could not do. As Musk says, once self driving is permitted by regulators, a person in New York City could summon his car parked in Los Angeles to drive across the country on its own and park itself in downtown Manhattan without any help from a human driver.
That scenario may not be pertinent to most people, but the dramatic increase in safety the new system will provide certainly will be.

Tesla Autopilot On Snow Covered Road With No Lane Markings

Below is a dashcam video showing how the latest version of Tesla Autopilot can navigate on a snow covered two lane road with no visible lane markings and no car ahead to follow. It’s difficult to keep all the details about Tesla Autopilot straight, so here’s a quick refresher. (Note: I am not a Tesla engineer nor do I eat, sleep, and breathe Tesla 24/7, so if I get a few details wrong, I apologize in advance.)

Tesla began installing the hardware pieces for its Autopilot system on every car built starting in October of 2014. The system consisted of a forward facing camera supplied by MobilEye, a forward facing radar, and 12 ultrasonic senses mounted around the perimeter of the car. For the first year, the system operated in shadow mode, which means it captured data from real cars in real world driving and fed that information back to engineers at Tesla. They used that data to refine and validate software that would become the basis for the suite of semi-autonomous operations known as Autopilot.
Then in the fall of 2015, Tesla rolled out a working version of Autopilot via an over the air wireless update. In the original scheme of things, the camera was the primary input device and the radar was secondary. The system relied on visible lane markings on road surfaces and could lock on to a car ahead to help guide it. Then in May of this year, a driver using Tesla Autopilot was killed on a Florida highway when his Model S failed to recognize a tractor trailer crossing the road. That incident led to parting of the ways between Tesla and MobilEye, with each blaming the other for the tragedy.
Tesla went back to the drawing boards. It completely reversed the priorities of its hardware, making the radar primary and the camera secondary. It rolled out the new programming in September of this year. In the video, we are seeing how the new software is able to drive the car without human assistance on a road where the lane markings are obscured by snow and with no car ahead for the system to follow.
In October of this year, Tesla completely changed the hardware that operates the Autopilot system. It added a camera with three lenses — a wide angle, a close range focus, and one with a medium range focus — as well as cameras at all four corners of the car. The radar was upgraded as were the ultrasonic sensors. It also added a new “supercompter in a box” from Nvidia with 40 times more processing power to manage the increased flow of data. The new package is referred to as Hardware 2.
Here’s where things get confusing. Once Tesla gets the new system calibrated, validated, and de-bugged, it will be known as Enhanced Autopilot. But Tesla is not at that point yet. When it announced the changes, it said the new system would operate in shadow mode only until its engineers could tweak the software and make it road worthy. The company promised it would start rolling out the changes in December. As of this moment, in typical Tesla fashion, it has over-promised and under-delivered. Until it gets its Enhanced Autopilot fully deployed, cars with the original hardware package and latest software updates have greater semi-autonomous functionality than newer cars.
The wait will be worth it in the long run. When fully realized, Enhanced Autopilot will allow full Level 5 autonomous driving in those jurisdictions where it is permitted. At the moment, only Michigan does so.

Tesla Autopilot Upgrade Puts More Emphasis On Radar, Less On Cameras

Tesla Motors released firmwware version 8 on Sunday, which includes an important upgrade to its Autopilot system. Stung by criticism about the death of Joshua Brown in May when his Tesla Model S struck a tractor trailer broadside on a Florida highway, Tesla has gone back to the deawing board and re-invented its world leading autonomous driving system. Starting with version 8, the technology will now rely more heavily on input from radar and less on that from cameras.

In a blog post, Tesla says “the most significant upgrade to Autopilot will be the use of more advanced signal processing to create a picture of the world using the onboard radar. The radar was added to all Tesla vehicles in October 2014 as part of the Autopilot hardware suite, but was only meant to be a supplementary sensor to the primary camera and image processing system. After careful consideration, we now believe it can be used as a primary control sensor without requiring the camera to confirm visual image recognition.”
Tesla acknowledges that the world can look like a strange place to a radar sensor. Radio waves can “see” through rain, fog, dust, and snow, but have difficulty with metal and people. The concave bottom of an aluminum can can actually intensify a radar beam, making it look larger than it really is.

To brake or not to brake. That is the question.

“[T[he big problem in using radar to stop the car is avoiding false alarms. Slamming on the brakes is critical if you are about to hit something large and solid, but not if you are merely about to run over a soda can. Having lots of unnecessary braking events would at best be very annoying and at worst cause injury.
“The first part of solving that problem is having a more detailed point cloud. Software 8.0 unlocks access to six times as many radar objects with the same hardware with a lot more information per object.
“The second part consists of assembling those radar snapshots, which take place every tenth of a second, into a 3D “picture” of the world. It is hard to tell from a single frame whether an object is moving or stationary or to distinguish spurious reflections. By comparing several contiguous frames against vehicle velocity and expected path, the car can tell if something is real and assess the probability of collision.
“The third part is a lot more difficult. When the car is approaching an overhead highway road sign positioned on a rise in the road or a bridge where the road dips underneath, this often looks like a collision course. The navigation data and height accuracy of the GPS are not enough to know whether the car will pass under the object or not. By the time the car is close and the road pitch changes, it is too late to brake.”
You may remember that Tesla first said that the software in Joshua Brown’s car may have mistaken the tractor trailer for an overhead highway sign. Tesla intends to rely on fleet learning to help solve the dilemma as to whether a large object will pass safely overhead or requires emergency braking intervention.
“This is where fleet learning comes in handy. Initially, the vehicle fleet will take no action except to note the position of road signs, bridges and other stationary objects, mapping the world according to radar. The car computer will then silently compare when it would have braked to the driver action and upload that to the Tesla database. If several cars drive safely past a given radar object, whether Autopilot is turned on or off, then that object is added to the geocoded whitelist.
“When the data shows that false braking events would be rare, the car will begin mild braking using radar, even if the camera doesn’t notice the object ahead. As the system confidence level rises, the braking force will gradually increase to full strength when it is approximately 99.99% certain of a collision. This may not always prevent a collision entirely, but the impact speed will be dramatically reduced to the point where there are unlikely to be serious injuries to the vehicle occupants.
Taking things to a bit of an extreme, Telsa says the new software will be able to control the vehicle correctly even if a UFO lands on the road ahead in a dense fog. Good to know if you are a Trekkie or a fan of The X Files. And there’s more. Teslas may now be able to see what’s in front of the car driving ahead.
“Taking this one step further, a Tesla will also be able to bounce the radar signal under a vehicle in front – using the radar pulse signature and photon time of flight to distinguish the signal – and still brake even when trailing a car that is opaque to both vision and radar. The car in front might hit the UFO in dense fog, but the Tesla will not.”
Version 8 offers lots of improvments for real world drivers, even in the absence of any alien spacecraft that may be in the vicinity. Here’s the complete list of tweaks.
  • TACC braking max ramp rate increased and latency reduced by a factor of five
  • Now controls for two cars ahead using radar echo, improving cut-out response and reaction time to otherwise-invisible heavy braking events
  • Will take highway exit if indicator on (8.0) or if nav system active (8.1). Available in the United States initially
  • Car offsets in lane when overtaking a slower vehicle driving close to its lane edge
  • Interface alerts are much more prominent, including flashing white border on instrument panel
  • Improved cut-in detection using blinker on vehicle ahead
  • Reduced likelihood of overtaking in right lane in Europe
  • Improved auto lane change availability
  • Car will not allow reengagement of Autosteer until parked if user ignores repeated warnings
  • Automatic braking will now amplify user braking in emergencies
  • In manual mode, alerts driver if about to leave the road and no torque on steering wheel has been detected since Autosteer was deactivated
  • With further data gathering, car will activate Autosteer to avoid collision when probability ~100%
  • Curve speed adaptation now uses fleet-learned roadway curvature
  • Approximately 200 small enhancements that aren’t worth a bullet point
The Tesla blog post does not say so specifically, but apparently all these upgrades are simply the result of alterations in software. No changes in hardware have been mentioned, so any Tesla built since October 2014 should be able to benefit from the improvements once the version 8 software has been downloaded and installed.
