Experimental Electrode Designs May Reduce Charging Times From Hours To Minutes

Researchers at Drexel University School of Engineering claim they have created a new highly conductive two dimensional material they call MXene that will permit faster battery charging. Led by professor Yuri Gogotsi, the team says electrodes made from MXene will allow ordinary batteries to charge as fast as supercapacitors but with the energy storage potential of a conventional battery.


“This paper refutes the widely accepted dogma that chemical charge storage, used in batteries and pseudocapacitors, is always much slower than physical storage used in electrical double-layer capacitors, also known as supercapacitors,” Gogotsi says. “We demonstrate charging of thin MXene electrodes in tens of milliseconds. This is enabled by very high electronic conductivity of MXene. This paves the way to development of ultrafast energy storage devices than can be charged and discharged within seconds, but store much more energy than conventional supercapacitors.”
Put simply, MXene has more places to store electrons than the electrodes in use today. More electron storage equals more electrical energy stored and transmitted. The team has recently published its work in the journal Nature Energy. Working with professors Patrice Simon and Zifeng Lin at the Université Paul Sabatier in France, the team developed a hydrogel electrode with greater volumetric performance, an important measure of a battery’s ability to store energy.
“In traditional batteries and supercapacitors, ions have a tortuous path toward charge storage ports, which not only slows down everything, but it also creates a situation where very few ions actually reach their destination at fast charging rates,” says Maria Lukatskaya, the lead author on the paper. “The ideal electrode architecture would be something like ions moving to the ports via multi-lane, high-speed highways instead of taking single lane roads. Our macro-porous electrode design achieves this goal, which allows for rapid charging — on the order of a few seconds or less.”
The primary advantage of MXene electrodes is their superior conductivity, which is equivalent to metals such as copper and aluminum. MXene was first created in Drexel labs in 2011 and researchers have been exploring its many and varied uses ever since — from energy storage to electromagnetic radiation shielding and water filtration.
“If we start using low dimensional and electronically conducting materials as battery electrodes, we can make batteries working much, much faster than today,” Gogotsi said. “Eventually, appreciation of this fact will lead us to car, laptop and cell-phone batteries capable of charging at much higher rates — seconds or minutes rather than hours.”
Henrik Fisker is also going down a similar path. He says his latest car, the Fisker EMotion, will use a proprietary system that is similar to a supercapacitor that will permit the car to have a 400 mile range and a 9 minute recharge time. Sitting idle waiting for an electric car to charge may be one of the biggest road blocks to mainstream acceptance of EVs.
Even Tesla, which has the largest high power charging network in the world, requires its drivers to wait 30 minutes of more to charge their batteries while travelling away from home. If someone could cut that wait time to a few minutes, the impact on the electric car market would be enormous.
The usual caveats apply. Researchers around the world on working on improvements that will make EV batteries, lighter, more energy dense, and less expensive while slashing charging times. Breakthroughs in battery technology are announced almost daily. But getting new tech out of the lab and into the real world is often fraught with danger.
More startups fail than succeed. So for the moment, this announcement from Drexel must be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. But if the promise shown in the Drexel lab can translate to reality? It’s game over for fossil fueled vehicles.

Fisker EMotion Electric Car Previewed Ahead Of August Reveal

Time was when a the first time a new car got shown to the public was at an event called a reveal. Now, the industry likes to tease the public with photos that show only portions of an upcoming new car in what might be termed a pre-reveal. The Fisker EMotion electric car is getting just such pre-reveal treatment this week. The company has just released a photo of the front of the car to whet people’s appetites.

Henrik Fisker is a respected automotive designer who previously worked for BMW and Aston Martin, among others. His first attempt at designing an electric car resulted in the Fisker Karma. It was actually more of a hybrid with a 4 cylinder Chevy engine wedged in under the hood. When the Tesla Model S was introduced, sales of the Karma plummeted and the company went bankrupt. It has now re-emerged as Karma Automotive.
Henrik Fisker is back with an all new company, one he claims will make a fast-charging, long-range electric car that has no battery. Instead, it will employ graphene-based ultracapacitors. The technology breakthrough comes courtesy of Nanotech Energy, a UCLA research group that specializes in perfecting graphene energy storage devices.
“Graphene shows a higher electron mobility, meaning that electrons can move faster through it. This will charge a battery much faster,” says Lucia Gauchia, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and energy storage systems at Michigan Technological University. “Graphene is also lighter and it can present a higher active surface, so that more charge can be stored.”
Jack Kavanaugh, formerly with Nanotech Energy, has now partnered with Henrik Fisker to form Fisker Nanotech. “The challenge with using graphene in a supercapacitor in the past has been that you don’t have the same density and ability to store as much energy,” Kavanaugh says. “We have solved that issue with technology we are working on. Altering the structure of the graphene has allowed them to improve the supercapacitor’s energy density.”
In addition to its cutting-edge electricity storage feature, Fisker says the EMotion will be lighter than a comparable car because it will feature a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber in its construction.

August 17 is now scheduled to be the day when the entire Fisker EMotion is revealed for all the world to see. We know the car will feature four butterfly doors. Fisker also says it will have a range of 400 miles. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid 2018.

Details Released About New Fisker Electric Sedan

We just got done talking about what Henrik Fisker has in mind for his next car. At the time that story ran a few days ago, there were no pictures available of the new car. Fisker has taken a page from Elon Musk’s playbook. He is now giving updates about his new company, Fisker, Inc., via Twitter. Yesterday he posted a photo of what he says is his latest car, which still has no name, so far as anyone knows.

There is little doubt what the new car’s target is. “I think it’s pretty clear when you look at the market, when you look at the premium market, there’s really only one company that is out there, and it’s Tesla,” he told Business Insider last week. To compete, you always need a hook. Elon Musk made falcon wing doors the hook for this latest car, the Model X SUV. Not to be outdone, Fisker’s latest creation will have two pairs of butterfly doors.
Younger people will recognize them from the McLaren F1. Older readers will associate them with the original bad boy supercar, the Lamborghini Countach. In any case, they are not gull wing doors and anyone who calls them that will be cold rolled in hounds tooth upholstery from a 1953 Mercedes 300 SL.
The designer says his sedan will be built primarily out of aluminum and carbon fiber. He also claims it will offer a roomier interior than “its closest competitor.” Gee, do you think he is talking about the Chevy Bolt when he says that?
Speaking of claims, Henrik says his other new venture, Fisker Nanotech, has created a revolutionary new battery that combines the best features of a lithium ion battery and a supercapacitor. Look for 400 miles of range and fast recharging times, he says. The comments we got to that news in our prior article suggest most of our readers are highly skeptical about whether that news is real or just vaporware. After all, Henrik has had some spectacularly bad experience with new battery technology before.
So we will take a wait and see attitude when it comes to the latest Fisker offering. If it performs as advertised, it could actually be the kind of “compelling electric car” Elon Musk is always begging other car companies to make. Fisker says he will be releasing more information about the new car next week. Maybe by then the car will have a name?

Fisker is coming back, he says, with 400-mile electric car using graphene cells

Henrik Fisker has designed some remarkable cars, among them Aston Martins, the BMW Z8, and of course the striking Fisker Karma range-extended electric luxury sedan. That vehicle, launched in 2012 by his namesake company, saw production of less than 3,000 units before the company collapsed in bankruptcy.

The same vehicle will relaunch next year as the 2017 Karma Revero, to be built in Southern California by the Chinese firm Wanxiang. The Danish designer left the company he cofounded several months before it was shuttered and subsequently sold in bankruptcy court. He joined former GM product czar Bob Lutz in VLF, a company that re-engineers old Karmas with powerful Corvette engines transmissions, removing the plug-in powertrain entirely to create a vehicle called the VLF Destino. Yesterday, Fisker revealed that he has formed a new company—called Fisker Inc.—that will unveil a luxury electric car with a 400-mile range in the second half of next year.

Big plans, eh?
The report comes via Bloomberg, which interviewed Fisker about his new ventures—including the creation of Fisker Nanotech, a separate company focused on electric-car batteries. "We have the [battery] technology that nobody else has," Fisker said in the interview. "And there is nobody even close to what we are doing out there.”

Jack Kavanaugh, who heads Fisker Nanotech, says that the new battery technology comes from research conducted at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Now based in L.A., Fisker declined to give details about the secret battery or the new car that will use it, except that it would be luxurious, sporty, spacious, and good-looking.
It will, he told Bloomberg, "look completely different" than anything else on the market. It will include some of his signature design elements, and target the Tesla Model S.

This time, though, part of the business plan is to sell battery technology to other carmakers as well, Fisker said.
The first vehicle will pave the way for the company to produce a second, higher-volume electric car with a price of $40,000 or less, Fisker suggested.
Targeting the planned Tesla Model 3, the second vehicle will still offer more range than competing vehicles in that segment.

In other words, that's pretty much the game plan from the original Fisker Automotive.
That company had unveiled a design concept for its second vehicle, the less-pricey Fisker Atlantic sedan (developed under the code name "Nina") before it went under.
Fisker gave few details beyond the establishment of the new companies and the various adjectives, though he noted the projects have been underway in stealth mode for two years.

New (Sort Of) Karma Revero Seeks To Take A Bite Out Of Tesla Model S Market

The Fisker Karma is back, sort of. After Fisker went bust in 2013, its assets were purchased by Wanxiang, a Chinese company. From 22 employees then, the company has grown to over 600 today. It plans to have nearly 1,000 by the end of the year. The Fisker name is nowhere to be found any more, but the Karma name has been retained. The new version is known officially as the Revero.

Details revealed during the launch this week include a starting price of $130,000, with few options available. The powertrain is virtually unchanged from the original Fisker Karma. It remains a plug-in hybrid with a 260 horsepower turbocharged four cylinder gasoline engine sourced from General Motors. 40 kW  DC fast charging is now available. The battery still uses cells supplied by A123 but has been upgraded from 20.4 kWh to 21.4 kWh. A recharge on standard household current takes 12 hours or 3 hours with the DC fast charging option.
All electric range is said to be 50 miles, which means Revero owners should be able to get to work and back without ever needing an assist from the engine.  The onboard charger has been upgraded from 3.3 kW to 6.6 kW. 0-60 in Sport Mode now happens in 5.4 seconds — 1 second faster than the original car was capable of.
Owners of the Fisker Karma complained bitterly about the lousy touchscreen. Wanxiang has focused the bulk of its attention on making the touchscreen in the new car faster and more responsive. Apple CarPlay is standard. Android Auto will be available soon. Over the air software updates are standard. All cars will come with a built-in 4G wireless hot spot.
Karma will use the same machines at its new California assembly plant that Valmet used to build the Fisker Karma in Finland. Many of the production manuals were in Finnish, so they needed translating before production began. One new feature of the Revero is a solar panel roof that can generate enough electricity in a day to move the car about 1.5 miles.
The Revero is obviously aimed at Tesla Model S owners who still suffer from range anxiety. The car is priced near the top of the Model S range. It is 2 seconds slower than the fastest Model S. It has an exhaust pipe. And while it is not unattractive, it is no ravisbhing beauty, either. Chances are the Revero’s main selling point will be that it is not a Tesla. While there may be a dozen or more Teslas at the local country club, the Revero owner will have the advantage of exclusivity.

2017 Karma Revero revealed with solar roof that can power car


The Karma Revero has been part-revealed on video alongside claims that its solar roof helps to power the car.
The hybrid-electric model is essentially a successor to the Karma of now defunct car maker Fisker, and it builds on that car’s overall design with a largely unchanged exterior. But the fitment of solar panels on the Revero’s roof is an all-new feature, and one that Karma says can actually supply energy to the four-door model’s electrified drivetrain.


Most other solar panel-equipped models, such as the Nissan Leaf(which offers it as an option), use the sun’s energy to power in-car accessories.
American brand Karma says this is the first time a production car has featured such an energy system in the US market.
No further details have been released about the Revero’s drivetrain, but previous reports claim it will use an extensively re-engineered version of the old Karma's drivetrain and battery system, with new parts supplied by BMW.
The original Fisker Karma was built around an aluminium spaceframe and featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. The plug-in hybrid system could offer more than 30 miles of pure-electric range.
Karma says the Revero will use a new infotainment system that "represents a departure from the norm", suggesting it'll be a defining feature of the car.
As a hybrid model the Karma Revero will straddle the lines between all-electric rival the Tesla Model S, and more conventional alternatives, such as the Porsche Panamera. Porsche's future Mission E production model could also be an eventual rival.
Karma will fully reveal its new Revero next month and will start taking orders later this year. Cars will be built at the firm’s California factory.
The newly formed Karma Automotive has been built upon the remains of Fisker Automotive, which closed for business in 2013 because of a lack of funding. With new Chinese owners Wanxiang Group providing a stronger financial backing to the renamed Karma, insiders are anticipating a more productive future for the American company.

The Fisker Karma Returns As The Elux Karma This Month

In march of 2013, Fisker Automotive filed documents to declare bankruptcy after the company burned through hundreds of millions of dollars in public and private equity to build its debut car, the Karma. It would take another year for Wanxiang Group to pick up where Henrik Fisker left off, and later this month we’ll get our first look at the “new” Elux Karma. Will the Karma be any better a second time around?
Right now all we’ve got to go on is a single teaser image and rumors that Wanxiang hasn’t done much to make the Fisker Karma 2.0 look much different from Henrik’s original vision. That much actually be to the company’s benefit, as one of the few high marks for the Karma was its beautiful styling. By keeping the styling the same, Wanxiang also avoids expensive crash testing, though another rumor predicts that the company will place a higher price tag on the remade Karma, which was a money-losing proposition from the start.
Of greater concern than aesthetics were hundreds of “bugs” in the original design that led to early embarrassments, breakdowns, and even fires. Despite this though, some old names are coming back for the Karma’s rebirth, for better or worse. Wanxiang’s owner has not been shy about his ambitions to build a world-spanning electric automaker, and using the Karma as a launching point for his Elux brand that could eventually compete with Elon Musk’s Tesla.
Can a rival to Tesla be born from the ashes of Fisker? Or is this one brand that was better off dead?

Henrik Fisker Newest Project Is Probably A 2015 Mustang

While Elon Musk has been embraced by Silicon Valley as the hero of the auto industry, another green car innovator has been out of sight since the company that bears his name was bought by Chinese auto interests. That innovator is Henrik Fisker, who is hoping to make a triumphant return to the auto industry with the “ultimate” American muscle car, which is probably a 2015 Mustang.
Fisker released the first teaser of his new vehicle, one of two he is building with the help of SoCal’s Galpin Auto Sports. GAS as its known is part of Galpin Ford, which almost certainly means the car Fisker is working on wears a Blue Oval badge. And what super important sports car has Ford launched this year? Why none other than the 2015 Mustang, and while nobody has said as much, the nickname “Rocket” has been leaked out, and there’s talk that Fisker redesigned (and even re-bodied) the Mustang’s look from front to back. GAS also revealed a 725 horsepower Mustang earlier this month at the SEMA show, so I doubt the tuning house is ready to take a step backwards.
As for Henrik, designer of gorgeous vehicles like the Aston Martin DB9, the BMW Z4, and of course the Fisker Karma, he’s mostly laid low since being ousted from the automaker he founded. Unless GAS shoved an electric or hybrid drivetrain under the hood of his latest design, I’d say that the world class designer has given up on the green car game. That’s not to say he hasn’t been busy, revealing new Viking motorcycle design earlier this year, but his moment in the sun seems to have come and gone.
However, Henrik’s legacy may live on if Wanxiang’s ambitions to build a new electric car company out of the ashes of Fisker comes to fruition. That is of course if the Fisker name sticks around with the relaunch of the Karma. It must be an odd feeling knowing there’s a car company named after you, using your design, and you don’t have a damn thing to do with it anymore.
Can you imagine a world where Fisker, not Musk, was heralded as the savior of the electric car industry? Where a failed Tesla CEO was giving advice to a successful hybrid automaker?

2015 Fisker Atlantic, Karma Headed for Production

Troubled automaker Fisker won a stay of execution when Wanxiang bought its assets out of court. In the days after the purchase, speculation about the future of Fisker ranged from starting where they’d left off to ditching the Karma’s troublesome hybrid drivetrain in favor of a more primitive and powerful Corvette V8, a la VL Destino. Earlier this week, we got our first hint of Wanxiang’s plans for Fisker’s future from the company itself, in the form of a newly launched website and a “promise” to build the Fisker Atlantic.
First shown back in 2012, the Fisker Atlantic was the baby brother to the Karma. A luxurious, good-looking plug-in hybrid that was intended to do battle with mainstream Mercedes and BMW models while the sexier, slinkier Fisker Karma acted as the brand’s halo car. The Karma did well enough before Fisker’s troubles started, and will probably do well again. No reason to believe, then, that a reborn Fisker with real funding won’t do better.

Fisker Auction Delayed As Bidding Price Doubles

With the surprise last-minute bid for the remains of Fisker Automotive, a Federal judge decided to delay the Fisker auction until late February. In response to a better bid from the Wanxiang Group, Hybrid Holdings LLC. has more than doubled its bid. Is this the beginning of a bidding war? Sure seems like it.
Hybrid Tech Holdings, owned by Hong Kong billionaire investor Richard Li, originally put in a paltry bid of just $25 million for the rights to Fisker, a company indebited to  U.S. taxpayers to the tune of $192 million. Wanxiang, which owns Fisker’s battery maker A123 Systems, came in with a $25.8 million bid as well as assumed debt, before upping their bid to $35.7 million.
In response, Hybrid Holdings upped the ante with a $55 million bid, and also has the backing of whatever is left of Fisker’s management, who hold the opinion that Wanxiang deliberately held back battery deliveries to kill Fisker faster. Seems a little silly given the fact that Fisker was losing some $30,000 on every vehicle it sold and had a preferential contract with A123 Systems, which also went bankrupt.
Both Wanxiang and Hybrid Holdings claim they want to relaunch the Fisker Karma and continue development of the smaller Fisker Atlantic. Since Wanxiang already owns Fisker’s battery maker it seems like the better hope for resuming Karma production, at least to me. America has been willing to give Chrysler and GM a second chance, but can a boutique car maker like Fisker really bounce back after a very public and politically-toxic meltdown?
