Ford Electric Cars: Past, Present and Future

Ford has been developing electric cars for more than a century. Will it finally deliver a winning EV?
Ford’s intent to become a leader in electric cars goes back to the company’s earliest days. In those 100-plus years, Ford produced numerous plug-in concepts, a few production models, and a lot of gas-electric hybrids. But the company’s EV efforts are mostly left undone.
Today the company is promising 16 new, pure electric cars in the next three years. As we await their arrival, let’s look for clues about the future for Ford’s electric cars by looking at its past.

PAST

As early as 1903, Henry Ford was aware that his friend Thomas Edison was experimenting with battery technology for vehicles. But it wasn’t until 1914 that Ford began openly working on a low-cost electric car. According to news accounts, the goal was to sell the so-called Edison-Ford for as low as $500, only slightly more than a Model T in the day.
“Within a year, I hope, we shall begin the manufacture of an electric automobile,” Mr. Ford told The New York Times in January 1914. “The problem so far has been to build a storage battery of light weight which would operate for long distances without recharging.”

The batteries under the seat on the first couple of electric prototypes were capable of somewhere between 50 and 100 miles on a single charge. Ford was also rumored to be establishing a Detroit-based facility to produce the first Ford EV for introduction in 1915.
During this era, electric cars were particularly appealing to women. Unlike gas cars that started with a hand-crank, battery-powered automobiles didn’t take a lot of muscle to operate. EVs were reliable, and they didn’t produce foul-smelling emissions. Henry Ford’s wife Clara, who drove an 80-mile 1914 Detroit Electric, was an early EV advocate.
By May 2014, Mr. Ford said, “It’s coming.” And he was proclaiming an EV revolution in the works. “The electric automobile will be the family carriage of the future.”
Historians aren’t certain why Ford never delivered on his promise for the Edison-Ford car. Some say that he was pulled away on other projects. But others believe that the electric self-starter was the culprit. When internal-combustion cars started replacing hand-cranks with electric-starter devices, EVs were robbed of a key selling point: ease of use. So, despite Clara’s encouragement and an investment of about $1.5 million in his electric-car project, Ford shelved his plans for a new, affordable electric vehicle.
A Long Hibernation
More than four decades passed before Ford Motor resurrected its electric-car efforts. Battery research was again underway in the late 1950s. Then, the American environmental movement gained momentum after the 1963 publication of Rachel Carson’s landmark book, Silent Spring. There was a flurry of federal legislation promoting cleaner air. Ford reportedly responded in 1966 by working on a car about the size of a Ford Falcon that could go 82 miles on a single charge.
The Wall Street Journal reported in October 1966 that Ford Motor Co. made a “major breakthrough in battery research.” The company claimed that its new batteries – using sodium-sulfur chemistry instead of lead acid – could store 15 times more energy than before. In a presentation on Oct. 3, Ford officials said the new battery technology would address the problem of limited range while offering better acceleration than gas cars.

Ford said that road testing of a new production electric car would begin in 1968. Small motors might be mounted in the wheels. But instead of introducing an EV in a popular five-passenger format like the Falcon, Ford in June 1967 unveiled its experimental all-electric Comuta minicar.
Built in England, the Ford Comuta used four 12-volt batteries to provide about 40 miles of range and a top speed of about 35 miles per hour. At the unveiling, the company said that practical electric cars would become “feasible within the next 10 years.” But the decade came and went without Ford showing progress with EVs. In 1976, Thomas J. Feaheny, vice-president for powertrain research at Ford, said, “I’m pessimistic that we’ll see many electric cars in the near term.”
Fast Forward Another 20 Years
After California reaffirmed its California zero-emissions mandates in 1996, Ford needed to produce and sell at least several thousand electric cars by 2003. The company responded with two electric vehicles: the Think City microcar and the Ford Ranger EV pickup.
In 1999, Ford Motor Co. plunked down $23 million to buy Think Global  – a Norway-based company that had been developing a funky, lightweight, plastic-bodied EV since 1991. After investing another $100 million in battery development, Ford in Nov. 1999 went into production of the Think City.

The two-seater offered about 53 miles of range and a top speed of 55 miles per hour. Ford also sold the Think Neighbor, a golf-cart-like all-electric utility vehicle with a top speed of 25 miles per hour. The City was offered in a 34-month lease for $199 a month. Ford had hoped to lease about 5,000 Think City cars but only managed to find about 1,000 customers.
“We don’t believe that this is the future of environmental transport for the mass market,” said Tim Holmes, a Ford spokesperson. By August 2002, Ford Motor Co. gave up, putting its Think division up for sale.
An All-Electric Ford Pickup
The more viable late-1990s Ford electric vehicle was the all-electric Ranger EV, a compact pickup produced with engineering support from Think. The Ranger EV was built from 1998 to 2002 – the era of General Motors’s EV1.

Ford’s electric pickup was converted from a four-cylinder Ford Ranger XL 4X2 Regular Cab. They were equipped with AM/FM radios, bench or bucket seats, and seating for two or three passengers. The nominal sticker price was set at $52,720, but Ford supported an affordable three-year lease program that put nearly all the vehicles into government fleets.
The Ranger EV used lead-acid batteries in the first year of production before switching to nickel metal hydride. The 26 kilowatt-hour nickel-based battery packs provided about 80 miles of range. The electric pickup faced a number of quality problems including diminished range after about 25,000 miles of use.
Soon after California weakened its ZEV mandates in 2003, Ford terminated the Ranger EV leases. Only 1,500 Ranger EV trucks were made over those four years. Most of them were taken back by Ford and subsequently destroyed.

PRESENT

The unexpected success of the Toyota Prius in the 2000s ushered in what might be described as the hybrid decade. That period was defined by automakers once again questioning if batteries were affordable and robust enough for pure electric cars. Ford shifted its efforts to hybrids, an approach that continues with its current lineup.

In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, Ford was well positioned to push for EVs – a technology favored by the new Obama Administration. The company unveiled its Focus Electric at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Using the Focus platform was a logical choice. Auto critics consistently pointed to the Focus as one of the most attractive small cars on the road. The EV variant, which went into production by 2011, used a 23 kilowatt-hour battery pack officially rated to provide 76 miles of range.
When it was introduced, the Focus Electric was the only pure EV that looked and drove like a so-called normal car. That was a welcome relief from geeky EV designs like the first-generation Nissan LEAF and Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Also, the Focus was fun to drive. The 134-horsepower motor provided decent zip. The liquid-cooled battery management system ensured consistent year-round range and battery life.
The big drawback with the Ford Focus Electric was lack of cargo space. As a gas car converted to run on electricity, the main battery pack was packaged under the liftgate reducing hatch cargo space by 39 percent, to just 14.5 cubic feet.

The Focus Electric’s initial starting price was $39,995 before incentives. To keep sales flowing, Ford in 2013 Ford dropped the price by $4,000 and offered a $6,000 dealership incentive, reducing the net price to $29,200. By the following year, that became the Focus Electric’s standard price.
Months before the Focus Electric went on sale, Ford’s chief executive Alan Mulally was downplaying the viability of EVs. “The infrastructure is just not there yet,” Mulally told Newsweek, from the sidelines of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. “These are very expensive vehicles because the batteries and electronics are very expensive.”
Even as Ford increased the size of the battery in 2017 to 33.5 kilowatt-hours – expanding its range to 115 miles – the Focus Electric was an also-ran. All told, Ford sold about 9,300 units before the company killed the Focus Electric (and most of its cars) in April 2018.
Experiments and Plug-in Hybrids
There were other short-lived Ford EVs. In 2010, Ford retrofitted a few hundred Transit Connect delivery vehicles to run purely on electricity. The company ran a pilot program to create a plug-in hybrid version of the Escape Plug-in Hybrid. And in 2011, it unveiled the Ford Evos, a plug-in hybrid GT concept with gull-wing doors.
The company’s most successful production plug-ins were the Ford C-Max Energi and Ford Fusion Energi (the current sole surviving model).
When the C-Max arrived in 2012, it looked like a winner. Only available as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid, the small and tall wagon-like compact provided 20 miles of all-electric range and a 188-hp power plant. The time seemed right for Americans to embrace the type of small utility car that Europeans have long embraced. But the experiment never quite worked. Consumers were confused about the in-between nature of the C-Max’s dimensions and the hard-to-describe powertrain. Besides, the Volt offered a lot more all-electric range.

In 2013, complaints and lawsuits emerged about the C-Max Hybrid not achieving its advertised 47-mpg EPA rating. Ford downgraded its fuel-economy rating of the hybrid to 40 on the highway – lowering it a second time in 2014.
The C-Max had a couple of years of decent sales. But the numbers were always well behind the Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. By November 2017, Ford pulled the plug on the C-Max.
Consumers were more open to the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid as a mid-size sedan with a traditional trunk. It ranked as the sixth most popular plug-in hybrid in 2018 – behind the Prius Prime, Honda Clarity PHEV, Chevy Volt, and BMW 530e.  With Ford eliminating its cars (in favor of SUVs and trucks), the Fusion is now a moribund model.

FUTURE

To get its EV program back on track, Ford announced in Dec. 2015 that it would invest $4.5 billion in “electrified” solutions(including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, pure EVs, self-driving cars, and all kinds of mobility services). The company promised that 40 percent of its nameplates would have electrified options by 2020.
By 2016, news emerged that Ford would create an affordable 200-mile EV, possible called the Model E, to compete with the Tesla Model 3. Sources said it would go into production in spring 2019.
But the biggest announcement about Ford’s future EV plans came in Dec. 2017. The company said it would create a new division dubbed Team Edison to design and produce electric and autonomous vehicles in a 45,000-square-foot former Ford factory in downtown Detroit.
Ford’s 300-mile SUV
On Sept. 7, 2018, Ford issued a teaser image for the first vehicle to be produced in the company’s new EV era. It showed the profile of Mustang-inspired 300-mile electric SUV, which is expected in 2020.
“We are being tasked to set the future trajectory of the company,” wrote Darren Palmer, Ford’s product development director for electric vehicles.
Palmer said that he and his team were “energized” by the company making an $11 billion investment to produce 16 fully electric vehicles by 2022. The Chinese market will figure prominently. The list of plug-in models includes versions of the Ford Escape crossover SUV, Lincoln MKC, and Transit Connect.
Ford continues to trickle out news about future electric vehicles. Last week, Jim Farley, Ford’s president of global markets, confirmed plans for an all-electric version of the F-Series pickup – the best-selling vehicle in the US for more than four decades. No date was given for when a new Ford electric pickup would be introduced.

ABOUT FACE: FORD SAYS IT WILL HAVE 40 ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES BY 2025

Despite having not launched a new electric or electrified vehicle in more than five years, it’s important to remember that Ford can be innovative. When it wants to be. After all, Ford invented the pony car when it introduced the Mustang more than 50 years ago and helped to create the modern sport utility vehicle when it put a passenger car body on a Ranger pickup chassis and called it the Explorer. Since then, though, Ford seems content to waft along, buoyed by the hefty profits derived from selling light duty pickup trucks to suburban cowboys.
Two years ago, the company announced it was committing $4.5 billion to bring electric cars to market. The rest of the industry scoffed. Porsche is spending nearly that much “just” to develop the Mission E, after all!
The Ford announcement was viewed as a half-hearted attempt to keep investors happy while still cranking out fleets of F-150s and new Ranger pick up trucks. But the world of automobiles is not a placid playground where the profits go on forever. Entire nations are threatening to ban the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines in the not too distant future- and, despite a push to lower emissions and fuel economy standards in the US, those same countries are ratcheting up their requirements.
With that in mind, Ford has elected to use the start of the 2018 Detroit auto show to announce that it is more than doubling its previous commitment to electric cars, spending up to $11 billion to produce EVs by 2022. By that time, Ford will supposedly have 16 electric models in its product lineup available for sale. Or, looked at another way, a total of 40 models with either hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric power trains- up from the 15 announced a few weeks ago.
By comparison, Ford’s crosstown rival, General Motors, says it will have 16 electrified models in its portfolio by that date. A bit of a low bar to be set by the company that launched the EV-1, no?
One of those all-electric models is reported to be a high-performance SUV that will carry the iconic Mach 1 label which first appeared as a Mustang model back in 1968. A slickly produced video from Ford shows a Mustang and an Explorer entering the company’s new Corktown development center in Detroit just as a bolt of lightning splits the nighttime sky. The implication is clear — whatever the new electric SUV is, it will combine the driving excitement of the Mustang with the utility of the Explorer. Ford says to expect it in showrooms by 2020.

Ford is Building a Fast, Electric SUV


Autoblog is suggesting that Mach 1 could become Ford’s preferred designation for all future performance vehicles, just as AMG and Polestar denote hotted up models from Mercedes and Volvo, respectively. The thinking is that Ford will hang onto model designations that resonate with customers — names like Mustang, Ranger, and Explorer — rather than giving its new electrified models names no one has ever heard of, as Volkswagen is doing with its I.D division, Mercedes plans to do with its EQ offerings, and GM does with the Bolt and the Volt.
That could be a solid marketing strategy, but first Ford needs to build the cars that will carry those legacy nameplates. Slick videos and hype won’t get the job done very much longer. The times, they are a’changing in the car business, and Ford is very close to being left behind as the EV train gets ready to leave the station.

Ford Says No Thank You To 200 Mile Electric Car

The future of the electric car is a matter of much conjecture. Last week at the SAE World Convention in Detroit, Kevin Layden, director of electrification programs and engineering for Ford, told the press his company has no plans to join the electric car range race. Instead, it will introduce a new Focus Electric with 100 miles of range this fall. The Focus Electric currently has 76 miles of range.

“I think right now with the launch of the Focus Electric at 100 miles, it is going to satisfy a big chunk of the population,” said Layden. “It’s going to be really affordable and a step up from where we are now.” Less range means the car can use a battery pack that is smaller, lighter, and less costly.
Last week, a survey by National Renewable Energy Laboratory was released that says most people thinking about the purchase of an electric car consider range and price the two most important factors. Most said they would like a car with 300 miles of range that costs less than $30,000. No such car exists at present, of course. More range costs more money. A lower purchase price means less range. There is no way to reconcile those two competing factors.
This is a remarkable statement coming just a few weeks after the stupendously successful launch of the Tesla Model 3. Tesla now has more than 400,000 reservations for its new car and that number continues to rise. Chevrolet says its Bolt will have “at least” 200 miles of range and will be in showrooms before the end of this year.
During the SAE conference, several speakers said a range of at least 200 miles is needed to alleviate consumers’ range anxiety about battery-powered cars. From a driver’s perspective, maximum possible range is not the issue. What matters is how far they can go and still have a comfortable reserve so they don’t have to worry about being stopped on the side of the road with a depleted battery.
In general, drivers only plan to make use of a about 2/3 of a battery’s maximum capacity, whatever it may be. If a car has 100 miles range, the driver starts worrying about range at about 65 miles or so. If a car has 300 miles if range, anxiety levels rise at around the 200 mile mark. It’s just human nature. There are lots of people driving conventional cars who start thinking about getting gas when the gas gauge gets below half. Very few drive around with less than a quarter of a tank of gas.
Last December, Ford said it would spend $4.5 billion to rejuvenate its electrified vehicle lineup. If its plans for the Focus Electric are an indication of how it looks at the market for electric cars, it will be content to be the bargain basement brand. That may be good for moving a lot of product but not necessarily good for generating a lot of revenue.
Ford, like FiatChrysler, does not seem to be all in on the electric car future the way Tesla Motors is. Which strategy makes the best business case won’t be known for 5 to 10 years. But Ford seems to be positioning itself to get left behind as the market transitions to the electric car era.

Ford Survey: 90% of EV Buyers Would Buy an EV Again

Even though Ford’s EV sales have been dropping in recent months, the Dearborn-based company remains committed to green vehicles and continues its efforts for developing new plug-in hybrid and all-electric models in a bid to ensure a stronger position in the EV market. As part of these efforts, Ford has decided to find out what electric vehicle owners want and how they feel about the existing EV charging infrastructure and the integration of renewable energy in the United States.
The American automaker has surveyed 10,000 electric-car owners from around the country, asking them specific questions related to home charging, renewable energy, the importance of mobile apps for EV owners and whether they intend on buying another EV in the future.
Probably the most interesting finding from this survey is the fact that the vast majority of those surveyed would consider purchasing an EV again, which suggests that EV owners are pretty satisfied with what electric drive technology has to offer. 92% of those who own a battery electric car, and 94% of plug-in hybrid owners said that they intend to buy another EV somewhere down the road. This is a strong indication that customer satisfaction levels are pretty high among EV owners, which will probably make Ford focus on the development of electric vehicles even more than they already are.
As far as how common the use of renewable energy among EV owners is, 83 percent of those surveyed by Ford said that they will consider installing a solar panel at home to charge their vehicles or have already done so. The motivation behind their decision to use renewable energy to charge their vehicles stems from the fact that it allows them to contribute to the reduction of air pollution and that it saves them a lot of money in the long run.
Ford also asked EV owners how important smartphones are for them in regards to improving the overall EV ownership experience. Most respondents said that they use smartphone apps to check their car’s battery charge and control their car’s air conditioning system remotely and check remaining driving range. In addition to that, most EV drivers said that they would want to have access to apps that would help them locate publicly available charging stations and charging time indicators.

This survey will certainly help Ford understand EV owners better, and find out a little more about their charging behaviors, satisfaction and loyalty and how interested they are in purchasing upcoming EV models. The company hopes that these indicators will help it increase EV sales in the future, which they expect will account for up to 5% of all sales by the end of this year.

Lower gas prices mean there are excellent deals on green cars right now



The phenomenon was big enough to make news in 2006then in 2008in 2011in 2012in 2013, andagain last year: a big move in gas prices means a big move in alternative-fuel-vehicle sales. True Car's TrueSavings report, which averages transaction prices across the country to figure out what people are paying compared to MSRP, shows that electric cars and hybrids are ripe for excellent savings right now.

The Ford Focus Electric presents the greatest disparity, with the average transaction price of $25,168 representing a 16.1-percent saving off its $29,995 MSRP. The Kia Optima Hybrid and Toyota Prius also snagged spots in the top five, with the Kia offering a 10.7-percent discount and the Toyota a 10.1-percent discount. One hybrid managed to show up among the top five lease offers, too: the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is just $315 a month for 36 months after $3,875 down in some markets.

Alt-energy vehicles got bumped out of the top five finance deals, however. That was dominated by light trucks and, oddly, two subcompacts. The press release below has more details.

"Fuel savings are not top of mind to many consumers right now, and that makes this a great time to buy a hybrid or electric vehicle," said John Krafcik, president of TrueCar. "With gasoline prices now averaging just $2.10 per gallon, and vehicle preferences tied so closely to short-term gasoline prices, automakers are heavily discounting their most fuel-efficient cars to clear inventories."

Toyota's Prius, the world's best-selling alternative fuel vehicle for more than a decade, also makes January's list of best savings. Customers who purchase a Prius Two model this month can save 10 percent off the hybrid car's $25,025 MSRP.

"Gasoline prices and vehicle type preferences are strongly related, and this relationship is cyclical in nature," said Krafcik. "Fuel is relatively inexpensive right now, but when the pendulum swings the other way it will make future alternative fuel vehicles more appealing."

Plug-In Car Sales Top 100,000 For 2014

With November’s sales figures still being tabulated, Inside EVs reports that 2014 sales of plug-in hybrids and electric cars in the US have already topped 105,000 units through the end of November with another month of sales still to come.
That’s a substantial increase over 2013, when a total of 97,507 cars were sold in the entire year. If the current pace continues through December, the total for calendar year 2014 should exceed 114,000 vehicles. Avid followers of plug-in and EV sales can follow Inside EV’s monthly sales tracker for up to the minute reports.
Of course, some will say that the total number of plug in and EV cars sold is a mere drop in the bucket compared to the number of conventional cars being purchased. Industry analysts expect total vehicle sales in the US market to top 17 million in 2014. But the trend toward EVs and plug-ins is growing. Navigant Research predicts they will account for about 2.5% of all sales worldwide by 2023.

Nissan’s LEAF all electric vehicle is the overall sales leader in the US with monthly sales averaging around 2500 cars. The Chevy Volt is next with about 1700 sales per month and the Tesla Model S is in third place, delivering about 1400 cars every month. The chart includes several models that have just become available, such as the Kia Soul EV, Volkswagen e-Golf and Porsche Cayenne S-E.

Ford Testing Wind And Solar Power Systems For Dealerships

Car dealerships have been catching a lot of flack for fighting against Tesla’s direct sales model and not selling plug-in cars effectively, but there are plenty of dealers out there trying to go green and do good by the environment. Ford announced a new pilot program this week to install wind and solar power systems on four of its dealerships, offsetting over 50 tons of carbon annually.
At the heart of the pilot program is a Wind Energy Corporation “Windy” turbine with Ford-emblazoned sails rotating in the gentle breeze. Along with a 7 kWh solar array, this energy will be used to power ceiling lights and electric car chargers, generating some 20,000 kWh of energy every year. This will reduce the carbon footprint of each dealer by 14 tons of CO2 every year, or about 56 tons combined, and produce enough energy to either power two average American homes or recharge the 23 kWh battery of the Ford Focus Electric some 870 times.
Ford tapped four participating dealers to take part in the program; Dana Ford Lincoln in Staten Island, New York; Tom Holzer Ford in Farmington Hills, Michigan; and two dealers in California: The Ford Store in Morgan Hill, and Fiesta Ford in Indio. Ford selected these companies based on their plug-in car sales and commitments to alternative energy. Ford itself has embarked on a major efficiency campaign, including $25 million in LED lights and the second-largest solar-powered carport in the MidWest.
Car dealers across the country have actually placed themselves at the vanguard of going green in a number of different ways. A New Jersey Honda dealer, for example, uses zero net energy thanks to efficiency techniques and a huge solar power array, and in Canada the Chevy Volt makes up 35% of one Chevy dealer’s sales, just because they took the time to do so.
Ford’s pilot program is hopefully the first step towards a nationwide effort to get its dealers to go green, with installation of the wind and solar arrays to begin early next year.

2015 Ford Focus Electric Price Cut To $29,995, A $6K Drop: Report



It appears that the 2015 Ford Focus Electric will get a major price cut of $6,000, bringing the suggested retail price to $29,995--more in line with the best-selling Nissan Leaf.
The battery-electric Focus is now in its fourth model year, and only about 4,000 have been sold since it first went on sale in December 2011.
That's roughly one-fifteenth the number of Nissan Leaf electric cars that have been sold (over a period one year longer).

Both the Focus Electric and the Leaf are five-door hatchbacks the size of conventional compact cars, with rated ranges between 80 and 85 miles.
The report comes via LeftLaneNews, which sources it to a dealer document it acquired.
The site also reports that Ford will similarly discount any remaining 2014 Focus Electric models now on dealer lots.

Earlier this year, Ford had authorized $6,000 of cash back on all Focus Electrics.
Such actions are often the prelude to a price reduction, as a $5,000 price cut on 2013 models proved to be for the 2014 Chevrolet Volt range-extended electric car.
This isn't the first time Ford has cut prices on the Focus Electric, either. The 2014 model was $4,000 less than its 2012 and 2013 predecessors, which were launched at $39,995.

That means the 2015 electric Focus carries a base price fully $10,000 lower than its launch price--fairly unusual among so-called volume models.
But the cut may have been a necessity for Ford to make even the minimum number of sales required under California's zero-emission vehicle sales rules.
Focus Electric sales were 1,738 in 2013, and are running at a rate of about 2,000 so far this year.

The price cut would seem to lessen any chances that the rumored Ford Focus Energi plug-in hybrid model will be launched.
The 2015 Focus lineup, a "mid-cycle refresh" with updated styling and additional features, came and went with little change to the electric version and no added Energi model.
Through September, Ford has sold 15,809 Energi plug-in hybrid models, against only 1,534 Focus Electrics.

The company has long downplayed its only battery-electric vehicle, stressing its limitations and suggesting that it will be unsuitable for many buyers--startling behavior for any automaker.
That has generated much debate over whether the Focus Electric is a compliance car, built only in minimal numbers to meet regulations, or a genuine effort to sell electric cars beyond states that have adopted California's rules.
This year's price cut may give Ford another chance to show it's serious about selling electric cars, but advocates will likely remain to be convinced.
