EnerDel electrifies trikes in the Philippines

Boracay is certainly a long way from Indiana. But business is business, and EnerDel has found some on that island in the Philippines. And, to quote the hip-hop lexicon, there's some three-wheeled motion to boot.

The Indianapolis-based company reached what it says is a "long-term" agreement with GerWeiss Motors Corp. in the Philippines to supply lithium-ion battery packs for the motorized three-wheeled vehicles that are used to ferry people around the four-square-mile island of about 12,000 people. The three-kilowatt-hour battery packs will be able to provide as many as five hours of driving on a single charge. GerWeiss plans to convert up to 500 three-wheelers to electric power by 2016 and says it may expand the program to other parts of the Philippines. Boracay is about 200 miles south of Manila.

Indianapolis-based EnerDel, whose automotive customers once included Volvo for the all-electric version of the Volvo C30 and Think with its City EV, was last heard around these parts on the fall of 2012. That's when the company said it was trying to reinvent itself by reducing its dependence on electric vehicle companies and putting more emphasis on batteries geared towards grid and home energy storage as well as medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. EnerDel, Inc., a leading manufacturer of advanced lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems, today announced it received a second supply order from Volvo Car Corporation to manufacture its 24 kWh, lithium-ion battery pack to power Volvo's C30 Electric car. EnerDel was initially selected by Volvo as its battery supplier for the Volvo C30 Electric back in September 2009 when the car was announced as part of Volvo's "Drive-E Towards Zero" strategy.

EnerDel will start manufacturing the additional multi-million-dollar order at the beginning of September with an expected final delivery slated for 2013. The split-pack design (tunnel and tank) that EnerDel designed, with integration support from Volvo's engineering team, will again be manufactured to Volvo's exacting specifications.

Battery maker EnerDel under fire over Think claims

When electric vehicle maker Think filed for bankruptcy last spring, it owed millions of dollars to EnerDel subsidiary Ener1. Ener1 was also a major investor in Think and a lot of the company's worth was tied up with the Norwegian EV maker. Any way you slice it, Think's failure put Ener1 in a bind. They were unable to collect on their debts, and their investments were suddenly worthless. Just recently, Ener1 was forced to restate their losses in 2010 from $69 million all the way up to $165 million as they factored in the departure of Think.

It follows that this was a big setback for investors in Ener1. According to many small investors in the company, it was also a big surprise. Investors have reported that Ener1 had been making positive statements about the condition of Think, leading those investors to overestimate the value of both Think and Ener1. As Ener1 was moving to restate its losses, investors were lining up to take the company to court. However, proving this type of case is often difficult and investors will have to show that Ener1 was both aware of Think's true condition and that they reported false information leading to a loss for the investors.

To complicate matters, Think has been acquired by a group headed by Russian investor Boris Zingarevich, who is also a major investor in Ener1. Zingarevich isn't exactly a newcomer on the scene, since he had a sizable stake in the company before it failed. So for the most part Think is operating under new ownership that's remarkably like the old ownership, Ener1 is still supplying the batteries, and both companies are still joined at the hip, but a lot of money has gone away.

Those TV viewers mourning the end of certain soap operas on daytime may find they can get similar enjoyment out of watching what happens next in this saga.
