How Much EV Range Is Enough? It Depends Who You Ask

The marketplace for electric cars is a bubbling cauldron of innovation these days, as manufacturers try to decide what products will get customers excited. All agree that EV range is a critical factor in the minds of most shoppers. The basic Nissan LEAF has a 24 kWh battery and about 80 miles of range. It is currently the best selling electric car in the world. Since the average motorist only drives 36 miles a day, 80 miles of range should be more than enough. But is it?

Chevrolet and Tesla have decided that a mass market EV needs to have 200 miles of range. Both the Chevy Bolt and the upcoming Tesla Model 3 will come with a 60 kWh battery pack that will allow each to travel about 200 miles on a single charge. Both manufacturers believe attitudes are more important than statistics.
“Today’s drivers of 100-mile electric cars always need to look for the next charge,” said Larry Nitz, G.M.’s director of global transmissions and electrification. He thinks 200 miles of range is essential to get people to stop worrying about whether they will be able to get to work and back without running out of electricity, even in winter when range may drop significantly. Asked by Popular Mechanics if other car makers will offer cars with the same or more range, he said, “They have to. That’s how the free market works.”
Nissan is quietly rolling out a 30 kWh battery that will give the LEAF a 107 mile range. It is only available in models with more amenities, which cost $5,000 more than the entry level LEAF S. But it has a concept car with a 60 kWh battery in the works. “We are very aware of what’s happening in the market,” says Ken Kcomp, director of product planning at Nissan. “Nissan is developing longer range batteries. There are different ways to look at EV leadership. Range is one of them. It’s not lost on us.”

“I question the race to the 200-mile electric car,” says Jose Guerrero, head product manager of electric vehicles, high-performance models, and connected technology for BMW of North America.He is somebody who looks at the statistics and wonders why someone driving 36 miles a day needs a 200 mile car. “We don’t see exponentially increasing sales with a 200-mile battery,” Guerrero says.
BMW prides itself on building cars that are fun to drive. Guerrero thinks loading an i3 electric sedan down with hundreds of more pounds for a larger battery would diminish the cars handling prowess. “Putting a 60 kilowatt-hour battery in an i3 would kill the dynamism of the car,” he says.

Siegfried Pint used to agree with Guerrero. He worked at BMW when he was part of the team that developed the BMW i3. But now he works for Audi, where he is head of the electric powertrain program and has different ideas about EV range. “I had that opinion six or seven years ago,” Pint says, “but if you want to sell a decent number of cars, you need ‘first-car ability’.” By that he means an electric car will need to do everything the conventional car with the internal combustion engine sitting outside in the driveway can do.
For its part, Audi is hard at work on an electric SUV, the Audi e-tron quattro. That car will have a 95 kWh battery and 300 miles of range. That’s quite a bit more than the Tesla’s electric SUV, the Model X. The Audi will also be priced below the Tesla at about $70,000. Why did Audi push driving range of the e-tron all the way to 300 miles? “That was a strong requirement from the sales department,” Pint said.
Sales professionals say people buy on emotion and justify their decisions later with facts. Attitudes are important motivators when it comes to choosing one product over another. A person may only need80 miles of range, but want 200 miles or more. Typically, wants trump needs when it comes time to make a buying decision. It seems a consensus is developing among electric car buyers that 200 miles of EV range is something they expect from an electric car.

We have heard a lot about other automakers’ bold new visions for future, longer range electric cars recently.  The Tesla Model 3, GM’s Chevrolet Bolt, any number of German press releases – but little from the company who has almost produced 200,000 LEAFs.
In fact, Nissan has been eerily quiet all year while other OEMs have touted future products.  Which has lead many to question the company. “Has Nissan dropped the ball and fallen behind the other EV makers?”
We think this is highly unlikely.  In fact, we think all the data is pointing to Nissan surprising the market and announcing a longer range option for the LEAF this fall in the United States.
Here are our top three reasons to believe Nissan has something up its sleeve for the 2016 model year, which first arrives fall.

After back-to-back years of approximately 8 months worth of production for the 2013 and 2014 Nissan LEAF, the current 2015 model year car is uncharacteristically planned to run almost 18 months (April 2014 – September 2015) before the 2016 edition starts to land at dealers in October.

So, why the unnecessarily long wait?
Also, one has to note that the next generation, longer range LEAF is tentatively scheduled to arrive in Q2 2017 according to the company, which is just after Nissan’s current “Power 88″ 5 year plan ends in Q1 of 2017.
This means there will likely be no 2017 model year LEAF, but a new 2018 model debuting sometime around April/May of 2017.  Therefore, an unchanged 2016 version would have to soldier on a torturous 18 months – all while facing the introduction of the 200 mile Chevrolet Bolt and into the reported introduction year of the Tesla Model 3, not to mention the other 22 plug-in models that have been announced to arrive before 2017 ends.

When close to a next generational launch (within 6-12 months or so), car executives clam-up until the last possible moment, so as not to bastardize current gen sales.
Need proof of this in the real world?  GM hardly said anything about the next generation 2016 Chevrolet Volt (details) until it hit the stand at the biggest auto show venue in the world this past January in Detroit at the NAIAS – just four months before production ended on gen 1.
Yet the 200 mile 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV (details) which stands to really damage nothing in GM’s present stable, also debuted at the exact same show, almost 2 years ahead of its arrival.
However, when a product is still several years out, auto executives can’t help but divulge “future-tense” details.
Enter Ex-Nissan VP of Product Planning  Andy Palmer almost two years at the Frankfurt Auto Show (who recently left the company last September to take over the top job at Aston Martin) who casually said at the time:
“For sure within the current model cycle,” when commenting on a real world, ‘reliable’ 200 km (124 mile) range, “the LEAF was introduced in 2010 and is expected to have a six-year life…We can do 200 kilometers now (2013). But it’s a cost balance. You can go to bigger batteries, that is relatively easy, but the more interesting stuff is the changing of the chemistry to get more kW hours out of the same packaging space.”
The 2016 model year LEAF will be the last full year of production, and it only makes sense to offer longer range batteries in the same package before switching to full production of the next generation car.

The most common place that new knowledge slips out of an automaker is from the lips of the boss – most notably after a long day at an auto or trade show.
This year (March 2015) from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Carlos Ghosn said the following on range autonomy on the LEAF, answering a question about delivering more battery life than will enable people to travel and transport longer.
“First you are going to see evolution of the autonomy.  Today the autonomy is between 100 to 115 miles (NEDC rating of various model year LEAFs range from 109 to 120 miles currently in Europe).  You are going to more than double this…we are going to, and others also, because we know, we follow all the technology developed by some of the suppliers.” 
The CEO adds that also “like any new technology the costs are going down, because there is much more efficiency, much more supply base moving in.  So I’m much more optimistic that we are going to get to something much more competitive in the next year to come.”

Conclusion

Putting all the data points together, we think that a longer range option for the current generation, 2016 Nissan LEAF, first arriving this October/November is a very strong possibility.

Add in the fact the CEO also recently said at the New York Auto Show last month that Nissan has high upcoming sales expectations for the LEAF (despite selling just over 30,000 copies in 2014)
“…selling 50,000 EVs in North America should not be, in my opinion, a task which is beyond our capacity”
With an already slow start to this year’s LEAF sales, and the additional sales pressure that will be applied by the 2016 Chevrolet Volt PHEV (and its 50 miles of all-electric range) in September, we see no way this 50k level could possibly be achieved until at least 2018, that is, at least without a range increase (or significant price cut) on the 2016 model.
Given the density of the next generation cells that Nissan (and LG Chem) are expected to produce, the current 24 kWh pack could be expanded to as much as 36-38 kWh without any significant modifications needed.  That would mean a theoretical limit of about 120-130 miles…or just about bang on to what Nissan promised was coming years ago.
So, is Nissan hiding in the weeds right now?   Are they waiting as long as they can, in order to sell as many 2015 LEAFs with 84 miles of range, before surprising the market?  Or has the industry leader with 4 LEAF-platform production facilities around the world, and more than $5 billion invested in the car, actually been caught flat-footed and is being passed by the other players?

After 28,000 Miles, Tesla Model S Still Has 99% Range - VIDEO

We’re just two years into the great Tesla experiment, but some drivers have already driven enough to circumnavigate the planet. One question many would-be Tesla buyers have is how well will the battery last after a bunch of driving? After 28,000 miles, one owner has an answer.
A YouTuber that goes by the moniker KManAuto posted this video showing his 60 kWh Tesla Model S still retains 99% of its battery capacity 28,000 miles after he first got it. When he first got his car, the Model S gave him an estimated range of 209 miles, but after essentially driving around the Earth, the Tesla is still good for an estimated 206 miles of driving.

The longevity of Tesla’s battery pack has to do with how they’ve built their batteries, relying on thousands of individual battery cells rather than a single large unit. This allows for high-speed Supercharging and a long-lasting battery. Tesla also liquid cools its batteries to keep range-reducing heat from adversely affecting it, helping making it likely the best battery on the market.
Though maybe not for long. Tesla has opened its patents to the world, and will allow other automakers to use its technology to advance electric vehicles. Those worrying that a costly electric vehicle might end up as dead weight with a dead battery after a few years can breathe a sigh of relief.

Nissan Leaf Customers Surveyed Regarding 150-Mile Range

The Nissan Leaf may get a big range upgrade, if a recent survey asking how much customers would be willing to pay for a Leaf with a 150-mile range is any indication. The survey also asked how customers feeling about receiving an 80% charge on a 150-mile Nissan Leaf in 30 minutes, nearly rivaling Tesla Motor’s own Supercharger system.
One of the biggest knocks against the Leaf is its lack of driving range, and no survey is going to convince Americans that they only need 73 miles of driving at a time. While a tremendous price cut has helped motivate Leaf sales, there’s a large segment of the population still unwilling to change their driving habits to match the limited range of electric cars. That’s where the bigger battery comes in.
The survey, sent to Nissan Leaf owners, asked how much they’d be willing to pay for a 150-mile battery pack option, the highest number being $5,000. Nissan has previously trotted out a Leaf with a 48 kWh battery pack, effectively doubling the range of the Leaf to, you guessed it, about 150 miles. The Nissan Leaf S starts at $28,980, though the bigger battery might only be available on the mid-level SV model, which starts at $32,000. That would bring the Leaf’s price into the mid-30s, though the $7,500 Federal tax credit could bring the price back under $30,000. Like the Tesla Model S, Nissan seems ready to offer customers multiple battery options.
Seems like a sure thing, and a wise move, for the Nissan Leaf. That said,I don’t expect the bigger battery to debut until the Leaf gets a major refresh, probably in the next year or two at most. Let’s not gloss over the potential Supercharger rival either; Nissan is already working to install more charging stations at local dealers, as well as providing free charging to residents of select areas.
With a bigger battery pack and Tesla-rivaling range (but for half the cost!), the Nissan Leaf could broaden its appeal exponentially.
