Living With A Chevy Volt

Yesterday was my first full day with the Chevy Volt the folks at Chevrolet have kindly placed at my disposal. I decided I would use it exactly the way I use my regular car, a 2010 Honda Civic, on a normal day. Apart from all the “saving the planet” goodness of driving an electric car, I wanted to know, “Is this a car I could live with on a daily basis?”

When I am not parked at my keyboard creating stories for Gas2, I am a constable for the State of Rhode Island. That means I deliver court notices to people. Not many of my “customers” are all that happy to see me. Basically what I do is leave the house and drive to dozens of locations in northern Rhode Island. If no one is home, I leave a note on the door asking someone to contact me. It’s surprising how many do. I call it “littering;” my wife calls it “disturbing the peace.”
I can spend up to 8 hours doing that on a typical day. Performance is rarely an issue, but comfort and getting in and out easily are important to me. My car is primarily a business tool. Ideally, it will assist me in getting the job done rather than putting road blocks in my way. Reliability is more important to me than acceleration and style.
I started the day with a 57 miles of range and 1754 miles on the odometer. I finished the day with zero miles of range and 1837 miles on the odo. That means I drove a staggering 83 miles on battery power alone. The gasoline engine never came on, even after the range indicator told me I had no range left.This is what people want — a car that under-promises and over-delivers. Congratulations, Chevrolet. Color me impressed.
How do I account for that? I don’t. I drove the car exactly as I would my Civic. I stopped to see my son in law in Providence who drives a Honda Fit EV. We drove around a bit and did a few full throttle starts in performance mode just to see what the car could do. I drove mostly on city streets, got caught behind a school bus or two, and drove about 12 miles on a highway. I did not try any hyper-miling techniques. I just drove normally, traffic permitting.
The Volt I have is loaded with every option known to modern science. Frankly, I don’t know what half the buttons are for yet. I noticed while I was driving on the highway that the steering seemed heavy. A couple of times it seemed like I had to fight the wheel. I noticed an indicator light was lit on the left side of the steering wheel and remembered the fellow who brought the car to me mentioning something about a lane departure system.
I cancelled the lane keeping function and the steering immediately became more responsive to my input. Note to Chevy. I can do without the lane departure technology, thank you very much.
While on the highway, I was approaching an exit I wanted to take. There was a knot of traffic around me that made it unsafe for me to get into the right lane. No problem. I pushed down on the accelerator and the Volt wafted its way, silently and effortlessly, to the front of the line. No drama, just the extra speed I needed when I needed it.
About halfway through the day, I got curious why there seemed to be little regenerative braking going on. Somewhere in the back of my head, I remembered reading about how the L setting on the gear selector would engage more regen. I tried it and sure enough, there was the regen braking I had been expecting all along.
I have to say, I am uncomfortable driving around in L. That’s what we did in my Mom’s Impala years ago when we wanted to make a lot of noise and impress our dates. It just doesn’t feel right being always in L mode. Time to think of another letter, Chevrolet. I recommend D1 and D2, with a programmable function that allows the driver to choose which is which. People who like a lot of regen should be able to make it the default setting for them.

Regen adds a whole new level to the electric car experience. It makes true “one pedal” driving possible, where the brakes are used seldom if at all. With a little practice, the driver can bring the car to nearly a complete halt just by lifting off the throttle. It’s an acquired taste. I don’t think I would care for it on the highway. But around town in traffic, it is just about the best idea since sliced bread.
Here are a few more things I like. The blind spot detection is sweet. I know lots of cars have this today, but it was my first experience with it. It works great. The backup camera has an audible alert that warns of a person, car or obstruction lurking behind you.
As I was practicing my one pedal driving technique, I got closer to the car in front at a traffic light than the car’s computer thought was prudent. Suddenly, a series of bright red LED’s illuminated directly in my line of sight and an audible warning went off. I was surprised the first time it happened, but I like how the system works. Definitely want this on my next car.
My first day with the Chevy Volt convinced me this is a car I could live with. Sure it’s “green,” but it’s also a darn good car. It is nearly silent but powerful. It tracks and steers accurately. It rides comfortably. I purposely drove it over some manhole covers that upset the suspension in my Honda but the Volt handled them with aplomb.
I mentioned that my son in law drives a Fit EV. He is an electric car enthusiast, someone who looks with scorn at any car with a gasoline engine. At the end of our test drive, he said, “Nice car. I’d buy one.” Coming from someone who already owns a battery electric car and has sworn never to own a car with an internal combustion engine again, that is high praise indeed.
I could do without some of the bells and whistles on this fully equipped car, but overall, I was thoroughly impressed by the Volt. No roaring engine, no shuffling gears — just quiet, confident, sure footed driving. It reinforces the opinion I and so many others have — the best way to sell someone an electric car is to get them behind the wheel and let them drive one. Are you listening, Chevrolet?

Chevy Volt reclaims US plug-in sales crown from Nissan Leaf


Sure, the big plug-in "sales" news of the last week was the tremendous number of Tesla Model 3 deposits. But as we all know, Chevy and Nissan have been building and selling plug-in vehicles for over five years now, and as the monthly sales figures rolled in, something interesting has happened.
Let's start with the latest numbers. Volt sales hit 1,865 last month, a 192 percent increase over March 2015's paltry 639 sales. Year-to-date, the new Volt is solidly beating the plug-in hybrid's meager numbers from 2015, when Volt customers were mostly waiting for the second-gen model to arrive. The 3,987 Volts sold this year 2016 are up 113 percent over the 1,874 in the same time in 2015.

Things were not as good for the Nissan Leaf last month, but the world's best-selling all-electric vehicle is not out of the running yet. 1,246 Leafs were sold last month, a drop of 31 percent compared to the 1,817 sold in March 2015. Year-to-date, Leaf sales are down 28 percent, 4,085 to 2,931.

This is the first time since March 2015 that the Volt has been in the lead.
The more interesting numbers, though, come from adding up all of the sales of these two plug-in leaders since they went on sale in late 2010. In those 5-plus years, the Chevy Volt has sold 92,737 units, while the Nissan Leaf has sold 92,522. That's a difference of only 215 cars, and it marks the first time since March 2015 that the Volt has been in the lead. Given Nissan's refusal to talk about a second-gen Leaf in any detail, we have to assume that General Motors will continue to expand its lead for the foreseeable future.

Take An Inside Look Into The 2016 Chevrolet Volt Drivetrain: Video



It’s a debate that has existed since the the original Chevrolet Volt entered the scene years ago: what exactly is it? Some call it their trusty electric car, while others take a more technical approach and say it’s a partial hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV.
Thankfully, someone else has taken the time to explain what’s going on inside the 2016 Chevrolet Volt’s drivetrain to help curious minds understand.
Truthfully, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid in every way. The second-generation Voltec powertrain combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack to give the car its green credentials. Altogether, there’s 149 hp and 294 lb-ft of torque on tap.
The main difference between the first- and second-generation Volt lies in the second planetary gear set on the 2016 Volt. The first-generation Volt only used one. The second gear set opens up a whole new world for drive modes, and allows the car to behave much differently.

Which Electric Cars Most Excite Potential Electric Car Buyers

Without surprise, current EV ownership matched historical EV sales fairly well — 33.9% had the Nissan LEAF, 21.4% the Tesla Model S, 16% the Chevy Volt, 6.5% the BMW i3, and then much smaller percentages had numerous other electric cars.
Importantly, I think this indicates that the EV-driver respondents are quite representative of the broader EV consumer market, which bodes well for making broad generalizations from this report.

More interesting than the cars people currently have (which we already basically know anyway) were the electric cars people intended to buy and were most excited about. Naturally, these results weren’t a huge surprise either, as there are just a few very exciting electric models publicly planned for market in the coming few years, but it was interesting to see how the preferences were split. Breaking out results for each model, here are the 7 hottest electric vehicles:

There are a few other long-range and competitively affordable electric cars tentatively planned for market, but their release dates are less certain, which likely caused them to rank lower.
However, another reason they don’t have as much buyer interest or enthusiasm may be due to Nissan, GM, and Tesla benefiting from “first-mover advantage.” The Nissan LEAFChevy Volt, andTesla Model S were the first genuinely mass-market electric vehicles in the United States. Many more of them have been sold than any other electric car models. Both early adopters and EV enthusiasts eager to join the EV movement seem to trust these companies and want to reward them for their leadership in this sector.

Tesla clearly stands out, even far above Nissan and GM, in consumer interest. I had a little fun with a couple of questions about the electric car company, and the results were impressive: 54.2% of EV owners/lessees self-identified as fanbois/fangurls (typically derogatory terms), and 28.6% said they were “perhaps” fanbois/fangurls. Interestingly, almost the exact same percentages came out of non-owner/lessee responses — 54.5% and 29.10%.

It’s unspecified why respondents were so enthusiastic about Tesla and its products, but there are several likely reasons. One is that Tesla is 100% focused on fully electric vehicles. Not only does it not produce fossil-fuel-gulping cars; it even stays away from fossil-fuel-sipping plug-in hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles. This, by itself, must endear it to EV enthusiasts.
The company, mostly via well known CEO and product architect Elon Musk, is passionate about combating climate change, air pollution, and oil dependency. This is important to many people, and we like Tesla more for its passion on this front.
Tesla has also demonstrated the ability and desire to produce extremely high-performance and innovative vehicles. The Tesla Model S has broken many auto industry records and turned the general concept of electric cars on its head. Additionally, Tesla is the only company with a super-fast charging network in place, a topic I’ll come back to later in the report.
Tesla has long held plans to release a long-range and affordable electric car. It is widely assumed that Tesla’s batteries come at a lower cost per kilowatt-hour than any other EV batteries on the market. Making that assumption, when Tesla does bring a mid-market car to production, many potential buyers believe they will be able to get “more car for the money” from Tesla than from any other automaker.
Given the reviews of the Tesla Model S and Model X, as well as Tesla’s Supercharger network, many EV enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting a Tesla model they can affordably get their hands on. Even those who have bought or plan to buy a higher-cost Model S or Model X are enthusiastic because the Model 3 will presumably bring long-range, fully electric transportation to millions of people — if all goes as planned. That would mark a huge step forward for the electric vehicle movement.

2016 Chevy Volt Wins Green Car Of The Year Award

The 2016 Chevy Volt has won the Green Car Of The Year award at the Los Angeles auto show. The  award is based on a number of factors, including fuel efficiency, performance, affordability, accessibility and availability. The 11 member selection panel also considers certifications from the Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board when making its decision. Other cars in the running this year were the Audi A3 e-tron, Honda Civic, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Prius.
“Chevrolet’s all-new Volt is a milestone, building on an already-technologically advanced ‘green’ car and delivering what buyers have longed for, including an impressive 53-mile driving range on a single charge,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal. “A visually appealing design, increased five passenger seating, and an array of on-board electronics combine with the Volt’s inherent efficiencies to make the 2016 Chevrolet Volt a real winner,” Cogan told Electric Cars Report.
The second generation Volt is an improvement over the original car in almost every way. It can travel more than 50 miles on battery power alone. Several people who have taken test drives in the new car report that range is accurate in real world driving. Since the average US driver travels only 40 miles a day or less, the Volt is fully capable of functioning as a pure electric car most of the time.
In fact, the car’s computer is instructed to start the on-board range extender engine from time to time just to make sure that the internal engine bits are kept properly lubricated while it waits to called upon. The new car is more fuel efficient that the original. It is rated at 42 mpg on the highway versus 37 and has an EPA rating of 106 MPGe.
The new car has been extensively restyled inside and out, giving it a more refined and upmarket look. The interior in particular looks like that of a more expensive luxury car. Robin Purchia ofCleanTechnica drove one recently and reported the Chevy Volt is quite capable of being a family vehicle, too.
The 2016 Chevy Volt is available now in California and 10 other states. It will find its way into showrooms nationwide by early next year. Not only is it handsome and fun to drive, with a larger battery and longer range, it is also priced at $1,000 less than the prior model. Well played, Chevrolet!

Los Angeles Adds 288 Electric & Plug-In Hybrid Electric Cars To Fleet

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced on September 11 that the city will lease 160 electric cars for use by the city’s police, fire, and general services departments and the Department of Water and Power. Garcetti said the move will give LA the largest pure EV fleet in the nation, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In addition, the Department of Water and Power and the General Services Department will lease 128 plug-in hybrids. Garcetti said the 288 cars would save taxpayers money and advance sustainability goals. Earlier this year, Garcetti released the Sustainable City pLAn designed to make the city more sustainable and deliver environmental and economic benefits. The announcement comes on the eve of the US-China Climate Leaders Summit to be hosted in LA on September 15–16.
“When we laid out our sustainable city plan … we promised that 50% of new city fleet vehicles purchased each year would be EV by 2017,” Garcetti said. “Now we’re fulfilling that promise ahead of schedule.”
A hundred of the battery-electric vehicles will be dedicated to the LAPD and will be used by detectives, investigators, and administrative employees. The LAPD is also being loaned a Tesla Model S P85D and a BMW i3, which were on display outside police headquarters on Friday. Those vehicles will be used for testing and research by LAPD technical experts to determine how the technology can support future needs.
“You can see right here behind me, the future,” Garcetti said, gesturing toward the Tesla and BMW. “Our goal is to one day go from gas-powered to battery electric in our squad cars. And if we do that, the impact could be national in scale. LA could once again the lead the way to help transform not just our department, but other departments and cities around the country.”
“I think that today, this announcement, will trickle across the nation as a challenge to other cities, other police departments, other fire departments to look at what you’re doing and to take a step that makes a change for the positive,” Chief Beck said. “Great day for policing, great day for the city. Proud to be an Angeleno.”

Getting A Chevy Volt For $17,400

With a much-improved 2nd-generation Chevy Volt about to hit garages, there are some great offers out there on 1st-gen Volts.

As just one example, an Iowan recently spotted a 2014 Volt for $25,900 that is still eligible for the $7,500 tax credit, bringing it down to just $18,400. However, he actually got it down another $1,000 by getting a “private offer” from another forum member.
The sticker price on this car, which is admittedly a “bare bones” vehicle without extra options, is $35,490. Chopping that approximately in half is pretty sweet, no?
In the forum thread where I found this, other forum members noted great deals they had seen, such as a drop from $37,980 on a loaded 2014 Volt to $27,628. This was another Iowa deal, incidentally.
In any case, no matter where you are living (in North America, at least), you should be able to scout out good Volt offers, and remember, even if the 2016 Volt is much better, the first Volts won a good number of awards, and was the car most loved by its owners for a couple of years… until the Tesla Model S came along and took over the top spot.

US Pricing For 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Announced

I just received an email from a representative of Audi that US pricing for the 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron has been announced. The MSRP base is $37,900 before the US federal tax credit for electric cars and before any state or local incentives.

The plug-in hybrid e-tron is the first plug-in electric Audi to hit the US market. It has already been on sale in Europe and has been doing quite well there relative to other models.
Some other key stats about the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron are that it produces 204 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque, has a 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and 240-volt charging refills the battery in ~2 hours & 15 minutes. (Recharging via a normal 120-volt electricity outlet just takes 8 hours, which is basically quick enough to recharge overnight.) EPA ratings for range and fuel economy haven’t been finalized yet, but will reportedly be announced in the near future.

This initial plug-in offering from Audi will hit dealerships in October. While $37,900 is the base MSRP, the “Prestige” package brings that up to $46,800. So, this basically puts it between the Volkswagen e-Golf ($35,445) and the Mercedes B-Class Electric ($41,450) or BMW i3 ($41,350). The US federal tax credit for the e-tron is expected to be $4,168, so a few thousand less than those all-electric models get ($7,500).

I think the e-tron is going to have a harder time finding a good sales rhythm in the US than it has in Europe. For one, the 2016 Chevy Volt is probably its top competitor, and it will offer a lot more electric range (53 miles, compared to <20 a="" and="" e-tron="" for="" href="http://gas2.org/2015/05/04/2016-chevy-volt-priced-at-33995-1175-less-than-2015-model/" lower="" miles="" price="" style="-webkit-transition: 0.8s ease-in-out; color: #3081ee; font-weight: 700; transition: 0.8s ease-in-out;" the="">$33,995

The e-tron is a little sportier and can get to 60 mph in about 7.6 seconds, perhaps a second faster than the new Volt, and it will of course appeal to those who like the Audi brand, but I think the majority of people interested in a plug-in hybrid will go for the cheaper Volt, Ford Fusion Energi ($33,900), or Ford C-Max Energi ($31,635) — mostly the Volt. But we’ll see, and some extra competition is certainly welcome!… even if it took Audi a few years too long to bring it to market.
Here are some more details on the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron from Audi itself:

Plug-in hybrid system
The 2016 A3 Sportback e-tron features a 1.4 liter TFSI® engine with a six-speed S tronic® transmission. Combined with a liquid-cooled, permanent magnet-driven electric motor, the A3 e-tron produces 204 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque for impressive off-the-line acceleration and high-end power. An 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides electrical energy storage and is packaged beneath the rear seat, allowing for a fully-usable trunk.
Charging and connectivity
The charging connection for the A3 Sportback e-tron is located behind the four rings in the Singleframe® grille. This placement in the front of the vehicle is convenient for charging from a power source on either side of the vehicle and the port is hidden when not in use.
  • 240-volt charging quickly replenishes the battery in about 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • Vehicle comes standard with 240 volt mobile electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) which can also be used in a common 120-volt outlet
  • Recharging through a 120-volt outlet takes approximately 8 hours
  • Home installation of a 240-volt outlet and home charging station are optional
  • Available smartphone app allows the driver to remotely check on the status of their A3 e-tron. It can be used to check battery status and for “charge planning” – setting times for charging to automatically begin
  • The driver can also use the app to adjust climate control remotely for added comfort and energy savings
Unique drive modes
The A3 Sportback e-tron also delivers a four driving choices for motorists, including full battery propulsion and battery recharge mode:
  • In EV mode, the vehicle is powered only by the electric motor for a smooth and quiet ride featuring quick acceleration
  • Hybrid mode allows the car to intelligently select the most efficient power source – either EV, Hybrid or gasoline
  • Hold Battery mode allows hybrid driving while preserving EV range for later use
  • Charge Battery mode uses the gasoline engine to recharge the battery while driving at highway speed
  • The electric engine can also supplement the gas engine to provide an extra boost of power when desired.

To ensure driving an A3 Sportback e-tron is convenient and sustainable, Audi is providing the Audi energy portfolio of products with each vehicle sold. Audi energy includes:
  • A standard Audi-designed mobile charging system that works with standard U.S. household outlets or 240-volt service
  • The option for professional 240-volt plug installation through Bosch Automotive Service Solutions, which can lower home charging times to around 2.25 hours
  • Optional solar power installation with rebates through SunPower
  • Audi contributions to environmental conservation programs through 3Degrees to help offset the carbon footprint of every A3 Sportback e-tron sold

The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron offers several advanced technology features, including:

  • The electromechanically assisted steering system operates sensitively and efficiently together with various assistance systems, while reducing mechanical drag for greater efficiency
  • In the four-link rear suspension, which utilizes a steel cross member, the springs and shock absorbers are mounted separately
  • The electronic stability control (ESC) also includes an electronic differential lock and secondary collision brake assist.
  • When driving through curves, it can brake the inside front wheel very slightly to help minimize understeer and improve traction

2016 Chevy Volt Pics Surface

GM-Volt forum member “cab” dropped a bunch of pictures of the 2016 Chevy Volt yesterday. These pictures from the wild make me like the 2016 Chevy Volt even more, and I was already a fan. It’s one of the best-looking electric vehicles on the market, imho. With 50 miles of all-electric range, it also means most people can drive electric on it for the vast majority of their trips (95–99%). If you feel a need for a gasoline backup but you want to drive electric, the Volt seems like a given.

I can’t say I’m a fan of the bright silver grill, and the gold-ish Chevy symbol, but overall, think this is a great-looking car. I can’t wait to see how this beast sells! And can’t wait to review it.

ChargePoint introduces new 24 kW express charging station

ChargePoint has introduced the 24 kW Express 100 compact DC fast charger, designed for businesses including retail locations, restaurants and convenience stores. Earlier this year, ChargePoint announced the Express 200, a 50 kW output DC fast charger with a maximum charging rate of 200 RPH (miles of range per hour); the Express 100 can provide 100 RPH.

With its compact design and state-of-the-art power conversion electronics, the Express 100 is one of the lowest cost DC fast chargers available. The station is designed to isolate critical electronic components from the outside environment, increasing reliability and performance, and with remote diagnostic capabilities, the ChargePoint Support team instantly detect problems thereby reducing down time.
Express chargers give drivers the ability to recharge in just 20-30 minutes and are crucial for long distance travel as well as quick recharging around town. In January, ChargePoint announced a partnership with Volkswagen and BMW to create Express corridors on the East and West Coasts. There are already 144 Express locations on the ChargePoint network.
Also this year, ChargePoint unveiled ChargePoint Home for single-family homes and ChargePoint Multi-family Home Service for apartment and condo dwellers.
Drivers can find charging stations and see their availability in real-time at ChargePoint.com or with the free ChargePoint mobile app. To start a charging session, drivers simply tap their ChargePoint card in front of the station, use the ChargePoint mobile app or call the 1-888 number printed on the ChargePoint station.

Deliveries of the 500 HP BYD Tang Plug-In SUV Begin in July

BYD is one of China’s most ambitious automakers, not only moving beyond China’s borders to sell its vehicles, but going all-in with plug-in car technology. One of the most anticipated plug-in cars of 2015 is the BYD Tang, a 500 horsepower plug-in SUV that is slated to arrive at dealerships this July, reports CarNewsChina. While the $48,360 base price might seem like a lot to swallow, buyers in China will benefit from a slew of incentives designed to make plug-ins more appealing.
2016-byd-tang-plug-in-hybrid-1The BYD Tang is the first of the automaker’s second-generation plug-in cars, often referred to as the 5-4-2; 0 to 60 MPH in under 5 seconds, 4-wheel drive, and less than 2 liters of fuel consumption per 100 km. Motivation comes from a pair of 150 horsepower electric motors, joined by a 2.0 liter turbo engine making a combined 505 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque.
Maximum electric driving range is rated at 50 miles per charge, comparable to the 2016 Chevy Volt. The Tang Ultimate Edition will push the envelope even farther, offering a 0 to 60 MPH sprint of just 4.4 seconds, rivaling the once-dominant Tesla P85+ (but not the AWD P85D). Speaking of Tesla, BYD is planning a Gigafactory of its own as it strives to stay competitive with Musk.
While the $48,000 price tag is pretty hefty, incentives could bring the cost down to about $35,000. Even in America, the federal tax rebate would bring the cost to just over $40,000, not that far out of line for your typical well-appointed SUV. The interior looks plush and techie enough without being overwhelming, the Tang’s exterior aesthetics would like right at home on America’s roads, and it’ll have plenty of passing power to play with.
If BYD is planning to invade America, the Tang should lead the way.

2016 Chevy Volt Stars In “Tomorrowland” Ad



When it was first introduced nearly a decade ago, the Chevy Volt was hailed as the car of the future, equal parts electric and combustion powered, a no-compromises clean car. The 2016 Chevy Volt introduces a new generation of GM’s Voltec technology, adding a host of improvements for an even lower cost. The 2016 Chevy Volt has shaped up to be a great car on paper, but GM still has to sell them, and it is turning once again to Hollywood to get the Volt in front of potential buyers.
A new 30-second TV spot called “Tomorrow, Today” sees the 2016 Volt morphing from five different previous GM concept cars into the extended-range electric vehicle introduced in January. I’ve always loved concept cars, and GM has built some of the coolest ever, with the Volt morphing through five are the most influential concepts in the General’s portfolio. In order of appearance;
  • Firebird III, which debuted at the 1959 Motorama. It was an extravagant prototype with a fiberglass exterior, seven short wings and tail fins. This vehicle, like both generations of the Volt, allowed drivers to pre-condition the interior temperature before entering the vehicle.
  • Firebird IV was an experimental car created to highlight what could be possible on automatic highways, including the latest infotainment at the time – in-vehicle television. The vehicle was built for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, which plays a key part in the plot of “Tomorrowland.”
  • Aerodynamics, also key to the design of the Volt, heavily influenced the design of the Astro II prototype. The vehicle was revealed at the 1968 New York Auto Show and at the time had speculators wondering if it was the next generation of the Corvette.
  • The 1969 Astro III was a sleek, two-passenger experimental car resembling an executive jet aircraft, even down to its low center of gravity tricycle-type wheel arrangement. The Chevrolet Volt’s battery lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity, enhancing stability and handling in inclement weather.
  • Chevrolet built the Express concept in 1987 as part of a project consulting with the federal government about building high-speed, limited access commuter roads open to specialized vehicles. The concept is described as “whisper-quiet” much like the Volt when operating in electric mode.
Tomorrowland, which stars George Clooney, hits theaters on May 22nd, and both the Chevy Volt and Chevy EN-V concepts will be on hand at the premiere, continuing GM’s tried-and-true tradition of product placement. I ain’t even mad though.

Plug In America surveys EV promotion landscape



"Got Juice?" Maybe that's on way to generate more nationwide awareness of plug-in vehicles. It worked for the dairy industry, right? Something needs to happen, because according to plug-in vehicle advocacy group Plug In America, something needs to be done.

In a nutshell, Plug In America says the cars aren't the problem. Indeed, satisfaction levels tend to be high for cars like the Tesla Roadster and Model SNissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt. Since mass-produced plug-ins started hitting US roads four years ago, about 300,000 have been sold, so that means a lot of happy customers.

But as the number of plug-in vehicle models available in the US (most of them just in California) doubles to about 40 by the end of next year, national and regional government entities need to do a better job coming up with a unified message touting the attributes of plug-in vehicles in order to reach Plug In America's target of having electric vehicles account for 80 percent of US vehicles by 2050. The analysis comes from a recent 35-page report titled The Promotion of Electric Vehicles in the United States.

Plug In America says the Multi-State ZEV Action Plan that eight states launched in 2013 to get 3.3 million electric vehicles on their roads within the next decade is a good starting point. Still, overall public efforts remain spotty, especially in the flyover states, where neither governments nor automakers are doing an optimal job to ensure those residents get the message.
