Verizon and VIA Motors unveil extended-range electric cargo vans


Verizon has collaborated with electric-vehicle developer and manufacturer VIA Motors to produce an extended-range electric cargo van. VIA developed and built the van, based on Verizon’s direction and fleet concepts, and expects it to achieve 100 miles per gallon with near zero emissions. Verizon will now test and deploy two of the vans in New Jersey and New York.
Bob Lutz, former vice chairman of General Motors and a VIA board member, unveiled Verizon’s new vehicle on Monday at the North American International Auto Show.
Because the average total miles per day traveled by Verizon’s fleet is low, the company expects the new vans to operate entirely under electric power most days; doing so would annually reduce CO2emissions by approximately 2.4 metric tons and reduce the use of petroleum fuel by about 750 gallons.
The dashboard of the new van is equipped with a removable tablet, which aims to prevent distracted driving by providing voice prompts and easy-to-read route information. Verizon will also provide technological capabilities, through its acquisition of Hughes Telematics, including fuel and route optimization, vehicle maintenance and diagnostics, emergency assistance, and voice and data services.
Overall, VIA anticipates the Verizon electrified work vehicles should improve fleet fuel economy by up to 300% while cutting emissions in half or more. The vehicles have up to 40 miles of all-electric range, using Li-ion batteries, with the added capability to drive additional miles by using VIA’s range extender.
In addition, VIA’s exportable power system option can provide 15 kW of continuous 110-volt or 220-volt power for emergency or job-site application.

VIA Motors and Verizon to Develop Innovative Electric Vehicles for Verizon's Fleet

Verizon and VIA Motors announced today, that they will collaborate to develop and demonstrate plug-in electric work vehicles using VIA's proprietary eREV (extended range electric vehicle) technology and evaluate the technology for possible wide scale application into Verizon's fleet.

The announcement was made at a press conference held today at the National Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, where VIA demonstrated an "electrified" pick-up truck and cargo van, two of the most widely used vehicles in Verizon's fleet, and provided test drives for the media and the public at the show.

Both models use VIA's proprietary eREV power train technology, enabling them to drive a majority of their daily work routes emission-free and entirely on electric power. The vehicles have up to 40 miles of all-electric range using advanced technology lithium ion batteries, with the added capability to drive unlimited additional miles using VIA's onboard electric generator or "range extender." Both vehicles can be charged from a typical 110V household outlet overnight for as little as $1 a day in some states.

In independent testing, VIA's eREV pick-up trucks have demonstrated up to 100 mpg in typical fleet driving. VIA anticipates the Verizon electrified work vehicles should improve fleet fuel economy up to 300% while cutting emissions in half or more.

"By collaborating with VIA on this extended range technology we hope to create a game-changing opportunity for Verizon and other industries to reduce emissions and cut maintenance costs without having to wait years for large-scale electric charging infrastructure."

In addition to significant fuel savings, Verizon anticipates utilizing the vehicles onboard generator and power export option to power work tools or even provide power to their network in an emergency. Work vehicles, which typically carry thousands of pounds of equipment and cargo, can save significantly more money than lighter vehicles by shifting to electricity that costs just 50 cents per equivalent gallon in many states.

Cargo vans and pick-up trucks are widely used by Verizon and many other large fleets from communications to delivery fleets and contractors. Electrifying these work vehicles could have a significant impact on reducing emissions and oil consumption nationwide.

OnStar, Verizon unveil second-generation research vehicle at CES; Volt with Verizon 4G LTE Network


OnStar and Verizon Wireless unveiled a second-generation connected research vehicle at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The static Chevrolet Volt research concept vehicle focuses on a comprehensive in-vehicle experience as in-vehicle energy management applications.

Users in the car have access to streaming content from the cloud enabled by the Verizon 4G LTE network and building on OnStar’s Advanced Telematics Operating System (ATOMS). Prototype applications demonstrate streaming content, sharing content throughout the vehicle, rear seat infotainment management, and video chat via Skype: vehicle to home, vehicle to mobile device, or vehicle to vehicle.

Additionally, OnStar built on its work with smart grid technology and home connectivity to develop in-vehicle energy management applications:

  • OnStar RemoteLink: Full integration of OnStar’s RemoteLink mobile application, giving the Volt owner the opportunity to access remote vehicle information and services.

  • Real time diagnostics and Eco Routing: Volt owners can access charge status, distance on remaining charge, find and reserve charging locations and manage pertinent Volt information and vehicle diagnostics.

  • Home Energy Management: OnStar allows users to control the home thermostat, lights, garage door and other systems directly from the vehicle.

Following the 2011 CES joint research vehicle, OnStar’s advanced innovation engineering team continued collaboration with Verizon’s LTE Innovation Center to further investigate the potential of the connected vehicle. The takeaway was developing a more holistic cloud-connected in-vehicle experience.

While the applications shown in the static Chevrolet Volt research vehicle are only conceptual, they demonstrate future opportunities the OnStar ATOMS Cloud capabilities can provide in combination with broadband accessibility, OnStar said.
