Route 66 Going Solar In Missouri - VIDEO

A section of Route 66 in Missouri will soon be covered in solar panels from Idaho startup, Solar Roadways. “It gets Missouri and MDOT prepared for 21st century innovations,” says Tom Blair, who heads the Road to Tomorrow initiative. “We expect them to be in place, I’m hoping, by the end of this year, maybe before snow flies.”

Combining road improvement with solar energy generation could be not only a boon for the Missouri but a model for other states as well. Blair says, “If [Solar Roadway’s] version of the future is realistic, if we can make that happen, then roadways can begin paying for themselves.”
Solar Roadways describes their tempered-glass roads as “a modular system of specially engineered solar panels that can be walked and driven upon. Our panels contain LED lights to create lines and signage without paint [and] contain heating elements to prevent snow and ice accumulation.”
The panels also contain microprocessors that make it possible for the panels communicate with each other and with a central control center. They can also communicate with the vehicles driving on them. Because the panels are modular, roads could easily be repaired without major disruptions of traffic.
Solar Roadways says it has already completed two contracts in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation. “Our goal is to modernize the infrastructure with modular, intelligent panels, while producing clean renewable energy for homes and businesses,” the company says on its website. “We’ll be able to charge electric vehicles with clean energy from the sun, first on our solar parking lots and when we have enough highway infrastructure, while driving.”
Solar Roadways is not the only company working on roads that are also solar panels. France is planning to pave 600 miles of roads with solar panels manufactured by Colas, which bills itself as the “World leader in the construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure.”
The Colas panels took 5 years to develop and consist of 7 millimeter thick strips glued to the road surface. The strips use a thin film of polycrystalline silicon to make electricity from sunlight. Colas says they have been tested extensively and can withstand the weight of a 6 axle truck. They are also said to be skid resistant.
Solar roads seem like a great idea. But real world engineering problems may get in the way. In winter, water can collect between the panels and freeze, damaging the connections between them. Traffic may scuff they so badly their ability to make electricity is greatly reduced. Frost heaves and other natural phenomena may cause them to break.
It’s an interesting idea, and one that deserves to be explored. Eliminating the need to plow roads in winter could certainly save cities and states huge amounts of money, more than offsetting the cost of  solar roads. Is this an idea whose time has come? “We’ll see,” said the Zen master.

EDTA: Plug-in vehicles are successful, but auto industry "didn't build that"

Electric Drive Transportation Association Says Government Partnerships are Accelerating Advanced Vehicle Technology Success

- Industry Growth Will Reduce Foreign Oil Dependence, Boost Economy -

Washington, DC-July 26, 2012-As an ample, affordable and domestically-available resource, electricity can be a key solution to reducing American dependence on foreign oil and improving the U.S. economy, Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) President Brian Wynne testified today during a U.S. House of Representatives Science Committee (Subcommittee on Energy and Environment) hearing. The hearing reviewed the U.S. Department of Energy's (U.S. DOE) Vehicle Technologies Program (VTP) and its activities.

Since the U.S. imports approximately 45 percent of the oil used in the transportation sector, there is an economic imperative to move toward electricity generated at home as an alternative to oil. The CRS estimates that the U.S. will pay $451 billion for imported oil in 2012, $30 billion more than 2011.

"With electric drive technologies – hybrids, plug-in vehicles and fuel cells – electricity displaces oil and reduces its stranglehold on our national security and our economy," Wynne said. "Electric drive is a real solution that is here now, and the industry continues to expand."

There are now currently more than 40 hybrid vehicle being sold in the U.S. , and manufacturers are planning to increase available plug-in vehicles from ten this year to more than 20 – at multiple price points – in the next two years. The electric car charging market is also growing, as U.S.DOE has documented more than 4,000 public charging stations across the country. Pike Research predicts that by 2017 there will be more than 1.5 million charging units in the U.S. Partnering with federal, state and local entities to research and develop electric vehicles and infrastructure is accelerating the growth of electrification. For example, through VTP, the U.S. DOE has worked with industry partners to decrease the cost of lithium ion batteries by a third since 2008. In addition, ongoing collaborative efforts with industry and the U.S. DOE have resulted in fuel cell vehicles meeting aggressive costs, performance and deployment milestones for commercialization in 2015.

Collaborative deployment efforts are also yielding substantial results. The U.S. DOE Clean Cities program works with more than 100 regional coalitions to help deploy alternative fuel vehicles and infrastructure. Since its inception in 1994, Clean Cities has saved more than 3 billion gallons of petroleum.

There are also numerous state and local efforts involving utilities, manufacturers, local business and city planners who are helping promote electric drive investments. To encourage advanced transportation options, states and communities across the country are establishing policies such as access to High Occupancy Vehicle lanes, permitting for recharging infrastructure and parking incentives for electric vehicle drivers.

"The return on public government investment in advancing electric drive is a nation that is less dependent on foreign oil and spends its energy dollars domestically,"Wynne said. "We must be able to compete effectively in the global market with these advanced technologies."

DOT awards more than $112M to 46 transit projects; more than half for purchases of new hybrid, battery-electric or fuel-cell buses

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has selected 46 transit projects to share more than $112 million in funding to promote innovative and clean-fuel transit projects from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Fifty-five percent of the total award will go to 24 projects acquiring hybrid-electric, full battery-electric, or fuel-cell electric buses or transit vehicles.

Projects were selected through the FTA’s competitive Fiscal Year 2011 Sustainability Initiative, which includes funding from two FTA programs: the Clean Fuels Grant Program and the TIGGER III (Transit Investment in Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction) Grant Program.

  • 18 projects replacing older buses with hybrid-electric models will receive a total of $39.2 million (34.9%).
  • 5 projects bringing in battery-electric buses will receive a total of $17.7 million (15.8%), with the largest single project being a $6.7-million award to Long Beach (CA) Transit to support replacing 10 older buses with battery-electric models.
  • One project (SunLine Transit) received $4,917,876 (4.4%) to acquire two new fuel-cell buses.

The Federal Transit Administration reviewed 266 project applications for both grant programs representing more than $1 billion in funding requests from transit providers across the country.

Oregon DOT selects AeroVironment for 22 EV fast chargers along transportation corridors

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has selected AeroVironment to supply, install, operate and maintain twenty-two (22) electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations along major transportation corridors and travel destinations in northwest Oregon. Site review and selection is commencing and construction is scheduled to be complete by December 2012.

Funding for the project came from a $2 million U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER II (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant.

AeroVironment will install the fast charging stations at existing, convenient commercial host locations in 22 targeted communities identified by ODOT, allowing EV drivers to recharge in as little as 15 to 20 minutes. This project expands the “Green Highway” initiative, a multi-state effort to provide EV charging infrastructure up and down the West Coast.

In addition to 480-volt fast charging stations, AeroVironment went beyond the requirements of the TIGER II grant and agreed to also provide 240-volt Level II charging stations at each of the 22 locations at no additional cost to the state. More than 2,500 AeroVironment Level II charging stations have been installed in 25 U.S. states since late 2010.

While AeroVironment expands its public EV charging network in Oregon, the company will simultaneously be installing fast charging equipment in Washington State through a similar project managed by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). When completed, the Pacific Northwest will have the most robust “Green Highway” corridor in the nation.
