Sparrow 2, the updated three-wheeled EV, on the drawing board for late 2012

An updated version of the Sparrow, the entirely quirky three-wheeled battery-electric vehicle that sold around 300 units before its parent company went bankrupt almost a decade ago, could make a comeback later this year, Wired magazine reported.

This new vehicle, the Sparrow 2, is the latest incarnation of what was first called the Corbin Sparrow, the brainchild of motorcycle-seat maker Mike Corbin. Corbin started deliveries of the $14,000 Sparrow in 1998 and at one time had taken $40 million in orders. Ultimately, the company only made 289 cars before going bankrupt in 2003, according to Wired. Corbin has long been working on a successor to the Sparrow, even pitching a gas-powered version called the Raven in 2007 through his Sparrow Motors. Corbin has said that vehicle would get as much as 100 miles per gallon in fuel economy. His new mission is to get the Sparrow 2 onto the road, but he's got a long way to go.

The upcoming Sparrow 2 is different from the Duo from Myers Motors. Myers ended up with the leftovers of Corbin Motors and created the NMG (No More Gas), a one-seat, high-top-shoe-shaped vehicle that costs $29,995. The updated version, the Duo (which stands for Don't Use Oil and seats two), has been claimed in the past to cost about $25,000 before the federal tax credit for EVs kicks in and may have a single-charge range of about 60 miles as well as a top speed of 75 miles per hour. Tallmadge, OH-based Myers Motors, which is taking $250 pre-orders on its website, was set to deliver the vehicle (which is classified as a motorcycle) last spring. The website now says, "Start driving electric in 2012."

Myers Motors unveiled the NMG2 (or whatever its final name will be) back in September, and the company is already prepared to take pre-orders for the two-seat electric trike. The car's base price is $29,995 but, if a thousand people drop $250 on a pre-order, the price for everyone will drop by $5,000 (actually, for every 200 people who pre-order, Myers can get volume discounts and so will drop the price by $1,000). Myers will wait until June 5, 2010 to see how many pre-orders they have and set the final price then. Throw in an estimated Federal tax credit of $2,499.50, and Myers says the best possible price will be $22,495.50.

Of course, this is a vehicle and so there will be options. The only information on these released thus far are two upgraded battery packs. The base vehicle ships will a 60-mile li-ion pack, but 80-mile and 100-mile packs will also be available for $2,500 and $5,000 respectively. Myers says that more information will be made available later.

Myers Motors NMG For TWO!

We have featured the Myers Motors NMG in the past and could only come up with one knock, namely the room for a single passenger. Apparently, others have expressed the same concern and to Dana Myer's credit, they have listened. Now the customer has a choice, one seat or two.

Their new model (as yet to be named, be sure to enter the competition for finding the right moniker) is still similar in appearance to the original yet has its own striking, good looks. In fact, we tend to prefer the lines and character of the new model. There are plenty of photos on the website, so have a look and tell us what you think.

One of the biggest challenges for the original NMG's was their use of lead acid batteries, which gave them a 30 mile range and short life span. Now, all NMG's come with Lithium ion battery packs, which yield a 60 mile range in the two seat version. Now, we have an EV that is extremely practical for commuters and even has plenty of room for the groceries that might be needed after work. Myers plans to offer this new two-seat model at a price that is even lower than the original NMG, which makes it a no brainer.

The Myers Motors NMG all-electric vehicle is one of only a handful available for public consumption. What is unique about the NMG is that it is capable of freeway speeds. There are several all-electric NEV's (Neighborhood Electric Vehicles) for sale but these are limited to 25 mph top speed. In most communities, this limitation will get you run over, honked at or flipped off. Some of the NEV's can now be modified for a top speed of 35 mph, which may or may not be legal in your neck of the woods. But I digress, so let's return our focus on the very cool NMG, which stands for No More Gas.

The car could travel about 30 miles with a top speed of 75 mph, meaning you could run on the freeway. Of course, you would not be able to travel far on the freeway! Nevertheless, Corbin had a great idea but could not maintain the marketing and quality necessary to succeed.

Dana Myers then stepped in to buy the ailing business and renamed it the NMG. He has worked hard to re-make the vehicle and promoted it well. The product today is a vast step up in quality from the Corbin days and their product support is solid. I have made the trip to Tallmadge, Ohio to visit their facility and drive the vehicle and I must say I am very impressed. It is quick and responsive and oh so quiet. You just cannot beat an all-electric vehicle.

The Myers Motors NMG is marketed towards the daily commuter who needs less than 30 miles range to get there and back. Of course, if you can plug the car in at work, that range may be doubled. I would personally like to see a two seat version and 50 miles range to make it worth the 30 grand selling price. Maybe some day, especially with Li ion prices coming down. Nevertheless, this is another brick in the road on our journey towards utilizing alternate energy vehicles.
