2016 Ford GT - first spy pictures of production car


First unveiled at the Detroit motor show in January this year, and subsequently shown in Geneva in March, the road car will look to compete against the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador.
Ford officials have already confirmed the show car is very close to the production version which will go on sale. This early prototype ditches the bright blue paintwork of the show car, but keeps the concept's shape.
Dave Pericak, the Ford performance boss, said of the GT: "We didn't unveil a concept car. This car is 95% how the production car will look."
The GT road car will be built in Canada by Multimatic Motorsports, which has worked with Ford on its race programmes for more than 30 years. It will start production late next year and will hit showrooms before the end of 2016. It will be sold in global markets, including Europe. 
Ford's group vice president and chief technical officer, Raj Nair said: "It will be made in a limited series, even more exclusive than the 2005 GT." Ford design boss Moray Callum also confirmed that availability would mean hundreds of units, rather than thousands.
Power comes from a mid-mounted 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine that develops more than 600bhp and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The car's body - predominantly carbonfibre, with aluminium structures at either end to house the engine and suspension - is expected to result in a light kerb weight. Indeed, Ford says the GT will have one of the best power-to-weight ratios "of any production car".
Though performance details have yet to be revealed, Ford says the new model will offer "outstanding acceleration and handling with improved efficiency".
"This is the ultimate Ford, a new halo," said Nair. "The ultimate embodiment of all our innovation - everything from the wheels, aerodynamics, engine. All this new technology is important for future Fords. The GT is the flagship for this innovation, and that's why we're building it.
"There are loads of new innovations here, and the hi-tech Ecoboost engine is a perfect fit for the car," he added. "The 3.5 V6 has more power than the 6.2 V8, and better economy. That blend of performance with efficiency is so important."
The new GT's styling keeps hints of the look of its predecessors by sitting low and wide and riding on 20-inch wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup rubber. The suspension is a torsion bar and pushrod arrangement, and incorporates adjustable ride height settings. Carbon-ceramic brake discs feature in all four corners.
It also features a rear wing that is height and pitch adjustable depending on driver input, and a large rear diffuser.
"Aero plays key role in efficiency - there's fully active aero. The teardrop shape is very efficient and the body surfaces reduce drag," said Nair. "It's important to improve aerodynamics to aid efficiency, and also cooling, because these smaller, power-dense engines need plenty of cooling."
Inside, the two-seat GT offers what Ford calls a "purposeful" interior, which is accessed via upward-swinging doors. The driver and passenger seats are bolted directly into the floor.
The rear-wheel-drive GT is one of 12 new models that will be launched under the Ford Performance banner by 2020. Other vehicles that will form part of the Performance sub-brand include theFocus RS, F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350 and recently unveiled GT350R.
The new GT will come to market to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford's GT race cars placing first, second and third at the 1966 Le Mans 24Hrs.
Speaking at the unveiling of the model, Ford boss Mark Fields said the company had been "thinking and kicking around ideas about how we can use innovation to make the ultimate ford performance vehicle".
Executive chairman Bill Ford said: "I have chassis number one of the 2003 GT, and I didn't think we'd top it; I think we just have, though."
Callum says that fewer than 50 people saw the GT before its Detroit unveiling - something which, combined with the lack of focus groups, he says has been a massive help.
The Ford GT will be one of the headline cars within the new Ford Performance sub-brand. Nair believed that Ford Performance vehicles would have a positive effect on the Blue Oval's conventional model range.
"It's good for business to make cars like this," he said. "Performance vehicles attract new customers, keep existing customers and allow us to bring in younger, wealthier buyers into the brand.
"There's an obvious, large new investment in Ford Performance. The real fun is to watch how these new cars will influence future Ford products. Performance is our passion, but importantly innovation with cars like this drives the rest of the range.
"Ford Performance is a halo under which we will deliver performance cars. It will increase our engineering capabilities. Cars like this are a proving ground for passionate engineers.
"[Cars like this] generate great business - sales have been up 70% in the US since 2009, and even more so in Europe. They are bought by younger and better educated buyers."
He added that existing hot ST-branded models helped lay the groundwork for Ford Performance: "ST has helped us create this foundation: 65% of ST buyers are new to the brand. 50 per cent of performance Ford buyers buy a Ford as their next car. 50 per cent of ST buyers are under 35, and 30% earn $100k or more a year."
Nair said a hybrid system would not have suited the new Ford GT's attributes: "We've a lot of work going on around electrification, but the GT is all about efficiency. It's not hybrid because it would add too much weight. We chose to reduce weight, a real focus as this benefits all attributes."
As for the timing of the confirmation of the new GT model, Nair said: "[2014] was a good year for sales [2014] but even through the tough times we've always invested in performance models. Doing it now is not because we're doing well as a company, but instead it's about where we are with the technology.
"Cars like this are embodied in our DNA. I can't imagine our company not producing cars like this. It's good for us and it's in our blood."
Rumours abound that Ford will go racing with the new GT next year in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of winning the Le Mans 24 Hours with the original Ford GT.
On that subject, Nair said: "Clearly the car makes a great platform for racing. Right now we're focusing on production but that's an interesting question."
Q&A with Moray Callum, Ford design boss
How do you set about redesigning a classic?
"It was important to us to design a car that was all about how you'd design a car with the ethos of the GT40 today, as opposed to redesigning the GT40. Yes, we wanted to pay homage to what had gone before - and there are details all over the car that do that - but there majority of the car was created to achieve today's goals.
"Above all, it couldn't be a cartoon of what went before. Frankly, the availability of materials like carbon fibre make things possible today that weren't even close to being available all those years ago."
How quickly has the project come together?
"We started just 14 months ago, and it has come together incredibly quickly. We did a quick scale model, then a full size one in foam and then a clay model really fast. There was a team of seven or eight designers working on the car in a room that we opened and kept out-of-bounds.
"It was a skunkworks project, and we were having meetings in the evenings and at weekends to ensure word didn't get out. That had the benefit of meaning decisions were made quickly and by a tight group."
How early was the powertrain set?
"Very early on, and that helped. We could fix the plan view, work out the cooling requirements, the frontal area and proportions and so on. Having an EcoBoost engine also validates the car - it makes it relevant. But the packaging is still tight, we've had to work very closely with engineering to meet their requirements, hit the aero targets and achieve our design goals."
How close is this car on display to reality?
"Probably 95 per cent. The project is ongoing and developing, but it'll be things like the door mirrors and headlamps that might be refined, nothing more. The intriguing aspect is that a lot of this car is a genuine test bed for us: we're learning so much about construction techniques, material usage, aerodynamic influences and so on."

2016 Ford Explorer Debuts With 2.3 Liter EcoBoost, New Features

The Ford Explorer helped define the SUV segment in the early 90s, and today the Blue Oval revealed the latest iteration of its globe-trotting top-seller. The biggest change for the 2016 Ford Explorer is the addition of the 2.3 liter EcoBoost engine, which can be paired with a tow package for the first time.
The 2.3 liter EcoBoost debuted last year on the Lincoln MKC and then the 2015 Ford Mustang, offering up to 310 horsepower in the iconic sports car. Offering 270 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, it offers 13% more horsepower than the 2.0 liter EcoBoost it replaces, but should still offer up to 28 MPG. Active Grille Shutters are a new part of the fuel economy equation, another carryover from the 2015 Mustang, though those seeking more power can find it in the 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 with 365 ponies on tap.

Ford has also introduced the new Platinum trim level for buyers wanting to go all-in with every feature and option, including the four-wheel drive Terrain Management System and dual-moonroof. Naturally it gets the range-topping EcoBoost V6, and for 2016 Ford has reworked the Explorer’s look ever-so-slightly, and soccer moms/NASCAR dads will benefit from a new external camera system and self-parking features that make parallel parking jitters a thing of the past. There’s also an increased emphasis on luxury on the inside for these top-end models, which makes Lincoln feel all the more redundant.
Not a bad look for the Explorer if you ask me, but I’m still waiting for Ford to plug in one of its hybrid systems to its larger vehicle lineup. There also isn’t mention of weight lightening or increased aluminum usage. I guess we’ll have to wait for the next redesign for that.

Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang Comes to L.A. With Flat-Plane V-8

The rumors are true -- the highly anticipated performance car Ford has been teasing is the Shelby GT350 Mustang, the first go-fast variant of the 2015 Ford Mustang. And for the first time, Ford will bring to market a race-inspired flat-plane-crank V-8 that supplies the Shelby GT350 Mustang with more than 500 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

After a long tease that gave us ambiguous images and false clues regarding EcoBoost engines, Ford's upcoming performance vehicle has been revealed to be the GT350. The car's 5.2-liter V-8 engine is the most powerful naturally aspirated production engine Ford has ever built. Unique to the Shelby GT350 Mustang, the V-8's flat-plane crankshaft should deliver the lightning-fast responsiveness of a racing engine, and is also said to have a broad, flat torque output. The engine mates to a lightweight six-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels through a standard Torsen limited-slip differential. Back in September, we confirmed that a flat-plane 5.2-liter V-8 was possible, and speculated that such an engine would find its way into the GT350.

UPDATE: Ford revealed the new Shelby GT350 in the sheetmetal at Shelby's facility in Gardena, Calif. The 2015 Ford Mustang-based Shelby GT350 drifted from behind a curtain to the side of the projector screen. While Ford is still tight-lipped regarding several important specs, the automaker did reveal a few more details about the new Ford Shelby GT350. Front track width has been increased by 35 mm to make room for the specially developed Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires that measure 295/35R19 up front. Rear tires measure 305/35R19. The GT350-specific front clip is lower and wider than the standard Mustang, while the hood and fenders are made of aluminum to reduce weight. Ford hasn’t released power ratings yet; only saying the 5.2-liter flat-plane-crank V-8 makes more than 500 hp and around 400 lb-ft of torque. The engine is backed by a Tremec 3160 six-speed manual transmission. Out back, quad exhaust tips frame the functional rear diffuser. 



“Make no mistake,” Ford Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer Jamal Hameedi said in a statement, “this is an American interpretation of a flat-plane crankshaft V-8, and the 5.2-liter produces a distinctive, throaty howl from its four exhaust tips.” The Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang matches its new powertrain with comprehensive aerodynamic, chassis, and visual upgrades. Compared to a regular Mustang, the GT350 boasts a lowered hood, a wider front track, stiffer suspension components, and beefier brakes. In fact, Ford says all bodywork from the windshield forward is unique to the GT350, and sits two inches lower than that of the standard Mustang GT.

 

The new aluminum hood is lowered and sloped compared to the 2015 Ford Mustang GT, and it is complemented by a mean-looking front fascia with a wider front splitter and a ducted belly pan. A carbon-fiber composite grille opening adds attitude to the fully overhauled front end, which is finished with Shelby’s signature cobra emblem. Wider aluminum front fenders help accommodate the wider track and wheels, and use special vents to direct air away from the wheels. Aerodynamic improvements at the rear include large rear diffuser meant to increase downforce and help funnel air to the optional differential cooler. A lip spoiler on the decklid also helps maximize downforce while keeping the Shelby GT350 Mustang nice and slippery. An optional Track package adds an engine oil cooler and transmission cooler, and a front strut-tower brace is an additional option for improved rigidity. In addition to recalibrated spring rates and bushings, the Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang brings to the table MagneRide adaptive dampers -- the first time Ford has offered the technology -- and a track-bred braking system. Up front are 15.5-inch two piece cross-drilled brake discs and Brembo six-piston fixed calipers, while the rear uses 15.0-inch rotors and four-piston calipers. The new system should be able to bring the GT350’s 19-inch wheels (10.5 inches wide in front and 11 inches wide at the rear) to a screeching halt. The staggered wheels wear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires with a unique sidewall construction, tread, and compound.

The Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang is no less purpose-driven inside the cockpit. Drivers can choose from five performance modes that adjust ABS, traction control, stability control, steering effort, and throttle mapping, while Track junkies will be pleased with the Mustang’s Recaro sport seats, flat-bottom steering wheel, and distinctive gauges. Attention to detail is supreme -- the interior even has fewer reflective materials to eliminate sun glare that could distract drivers. Big brakes or not, nobody wants to be careening around a turn at 100 mph while blinded by the sun. Creature comforts like power-operated and leather-trimmed seats, a Shaker audio system, an 8-inch screen with MyFord Touch, and dual-zone climate control, are part of the optional Tech package. While the new Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang might not be as crazy powerful as the old supercharged GT500, with its absurd 662 horses and 200-plus-mph top speed, there’s no reason to believe the new car won’t deliver fantastic performance. We’ll know more when the car is officially unveiled at this week's 2014 Los Angeles auto show, but we’re already slack-jawed at the prospect of a face-off with the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. Let the games begin.

2015 Mustang EcoBoost Good For At Least 31 MPG?

The 2.3 liter EcoBoost engine found in the 2015 Mustang is one of the most talked-about motors of the past two years, and we finally have some hard numbers attached to it. The official ratings are 310 horsepower and 320 ft-lbs of torque, which is comparable to the Mustang’s V8 engines of just a decade ago. Now we’re getting the first reports on fuel economy, and it ain’t too shabby.
A post over on reddit from u/noname87scr claims to work at a Ford dealer, where a 2015 Mustang EcoBoost just showed up. He posted the above shot of the engine bay, and says that the Ford rep claimed he was getting 31 MPG on the highway. 310 horsepower and 31 MPG? I’m still set on getting a Tesla, but those are the kinds of numbers that make it a good time to be a Mustang fan, especially after hearing this torquey EcoBoost engine gettin’ it on at the track.
Just wait until the aftermarket gets its hands on this engine too. 400 horsepower shouldn’t take much more than an ECO reflash, a bigger exhaust, and a small shot of nitrous. The tiny turbocharger could also do with an upgrade, pushing well into Mustang GT territory. The EcoBoost engine comes at a $1,500 premium to the base V6, but is some $7,000 cheaper than the heavier V8-powered GT model, adding to my argument that the V8 muscle car is on its way out.
Ford still hasn’t revealed the official fuel economy figures, but could Ford land numbers as high as 35 MPG on the highway? If a Ford rep was really managing 31 MPG on the highway, and was driving it with any sort of gusto, 35 MPG wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost: Huge Push For Turbo Four-Cylinder On The Way



One of the most talked-about features of the redesigned 2015 Ford Mustang is an optional turbocharged EcoBoost 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine.
It's not the first four-cylinder Mustang engine, but the EcoBoost will carve out a space in a lineup that's traditionally been dominated by larger V-6 and V-8 engines.
That would explain why, according to Mustangs Daily, a huge marketing push for the EcoBoost is on the way, one that will discourage buying the V-6.
That 3.7-liter V-6 is likely to remain the Mustang's base engine--with the EcoBoost placed between it and the available 5.0-liter V-8--and it's done pretty well in that position so far. Over half of current-generation Mustangs sold are reportedly V-6 models, and now Ford will have to convince buyers to pay more for a smaller engine.
The EcoBoost is expected to produce 305 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, compared to 300 hp and 270 lb-ft for the V-6.
It likely will get better EPA fuel economy ratings, although it's really more about less-inefficient performance than gas mileage.
One part of Ford's dissuasion strategy is simply not offering the V-6 in certain markets--like Europe--making the EcoBoost the de facto base engine.
Ford will also limit the options available with the V-6.
Buyers won't be able to get options like Recaro sport seats, the TrackApps connectivity feature, or larger 19- or 20-inch wheels.
The V-6 2015 Mustang also won't be available with the Performance and Premium packages. The former includes upgraded suspension, brakes, and wheels, while the latter upgrades the interior beyond the basic black-cloth seats.
These tactics underscore the need for customers to buy the EcoBoost Mustang, and not simply to justify its existence.
While the EcoBoost four isn't necessarily for fuel economy, it should still perform better than the V-6, contributing to a better Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) mix for the company.
CAFE standards will require 2025-model-year vehicles to achieve a fleet average of54.5 mpg, which translates to an EPA window-sticker rating of around 42 mpg.

Forget LA, Detroit, Chicago, or even SEMA. If you’re a dedicated go-fast enthusiast, the Performance and Racing Industry trade show (aka, the PRI Show) is the one you want to be at. With serious hardware from motorsports’ major players and some trick new toys on display, the 2013 show at Indy was no exception- and that’s especially true if you like a little “sustainable” with your crazy levels of horsepower.
After several years in Orlando, the PRI Show is back in its spiritual home in Indianapolis- just a few minutes away from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Over the next few days, I’ll be trying to bring you the best green/sustainable fuels tech from a show that’s heavy in alternative, sustainable fuels like ethanol, propane, and more- including a real “blast from the past” entry for our Recycled Hawtness series and a review of my ride to and from the trip- a 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid.

Craigslist Find: An All-Electric Ford Mustang





As far as American cars go, only a handful have the staying power of the Ford Mustang. Introduced in 1964, the Mustang has captivated hearts and minds for decades and has cultivated an enormous aftermarket that means any and everything you can imagine doing is possible.
This includes converting a near-classic Fox-body Mustang into an all-electric personal commuter…and it can be yours for just $4,995.

American Muscle Powered By Electrons

I stumbled across this Sarasota craigslist advertisement on one of the larger Mustang forums, and the conversion certainly looks pretty clean. The drive system consists of a 144 volt battery setup of 12 12-volt Alpha gel cell batteries, an electric motor, a Curtis controller, and a clutchless five-speed manual transmission.

According to the seller, the flip-up sunroof, AM/FM radio, and custom instrument cluster all work on this one-of-a-kind Mustang, though highway driving range is limited to just 25 miles or so. In other words, this Mustang isn’t good for much more than putzing around town…but an upgrade to some lithium-ion batteries could easily double or even triple the range.

A Cooler, Kinder Commuter

I know this electric Mustang might rub some people the wrong way. But considering the abundance of underpowered, 4-cylinder Mustangs out there (mine among them), an EV conversion would actually be a pretty cool commuter car..and cheap too. The asking price is less than $5,000, and running costs can be measured in pennies a day.

As far as EV conversions go, this isn’t quite as cool as the GT-40 replica, or as fast as EV West’s BMW M3. There are even hybrid retrofit kits in developmentthat could one day make converting your car to a hybrid as easy as bolting on an air filter. But in its own way, this electric Mustang is a pretty cool car.

Sure, you might be able to replicate this build on your own…but it wouldn’t be a bad base to get started on either. Could you see yourself rocking this muscle-car-turned-EV on a daily basis?
