Long Rumored Mid-Engine Corvette Coming In 2019

Rumors of a mid-engine Corvette have been floating around for decades. In theory, putting the mass of the engine near the center of a car improves handling. Why? Because it allows the car to turn and change direction more quickly. Let’s try a little experiment to see if that’s true.

Take a 4 feet long stick and attach a one pound weight to the front of it. Hold the stick in the center with one hand and turn it left and right. Your wrist will tell you it takes some effort to get the stick moving. When you try to turn it back the other way, it takes more effort to get it to stop turning one way and start turning the other. You have just discovered what scientists call the polar moment of inertia.
 Congratulations, you have simulated the handling characteristics of a 1954 Buick, the one that featured “Advanced Thrust” because engineers had moved the engine as far forward in the chassis as possible.
Now turn the stick around so the weight is in the back. One again, your wrist will tell you the weight makes it hard to start moving the stick in one direction and hard to get it to stop moving in that direction and turn back the other way. This time you have simulated the handling of early Porsches, which had the engine as far back as possible in the chassis.
Now put the weight in the center of the stick. Suddenly, you can twirl it one way and then the other with ease. The polar moment of inertia has been reduced almost to zero. A car built this way would be perfectly balanced, ready to eat up any curve that comes its way. It would be instantly responsive to the driver’s commands. That’s the theory, anyway.
In reality, things are much more complex. There are heavy items like the chassis, brakes, transmission, windows, doors, people, and luggage that keep any car from being perfectly balanced. But putting the engine — the heaviest component of all — in the middle of the car helps make the finished product as well balanced as possible.
Sources tell the Detroit News, “It’s happening. Mark Reuss wants it,” referring to the automaker’s global product development chief. “It’s the worst kept secret in town.” Bob Lutz, formerly the head honcho at GM, says the car was actually approved back in 2007 but the infamous corporate bankruptcy forced it onto the back burner. He thinks the mid-engine configuration could open up the possibility of adding electric motors to the front wheels of the car for limited all wheel drive capability and an overall fuel economy rating approaching 80 mpg city.
Such an electrified Corvette would be similar to the new Acura NSX and the Ferrari LaFerrari but cost much less. Corvette has always offered supercar performance at a relatively affordable price.
Corvette buyers are getting older. A plug-in hybrid electric car could appeal to younger customers or it could drive away the Corvette faithful. The car has remained basically the same since 1953 — a front engine, rear wheel drive, two seat sports car using a pushrod internal combustion engine. Jeep struck out when it dropped round headlights. Harley Davidson owners gave the cold shoulder to the technically brilliant V-Rod because it didn’t sound right. New Coke was the biggest disaster in marketing history.
Will Corvette buyers accept a mid-engine car? That remains to be seen. The design concept by Car and Driver — with its enormous flying buttresses — is quite unappealing, especially compared to the daringly swoopy seventh generation Corvette in showrooms today. It will be interesting to see what sort of package the designers come up with for the new mid-engine Corvette. Look for it to break cover in 2018, if the rumors are true.

In almost six decades on sale, the Chevrolet Corvette has become a pop culture icon as well as a mainstay of American performance.
So wouldn't it be a coup for electric cars if Chevy added a plug-in hybrid powertrain to the Corvette?

GM is now developing the eighth-generation Corvette, and no less of a personage than former GM product czar Bob Lutz believes the new model will get a plug-in hybrid option.
GM is giving the next-generation Corvette—known as the C8—a longer development period in order to add a plug-in powertrain, Lutz speculated in an e-mail to The Detroit News.
The C8 will start production in late 2018, and go on sale in 2019, the paper says.
Lutz predicts "10- to 15-mile plug-in electric capability," courtesy of a lithium-ion battery pack no larger than 5 kilowatt hours.

He also expects the plug-in Corvette to achieve 50 mpg city in EPA testing.
Such a powertrain would mark a dramatic change in what is already expected to be one of the most radical Corvette redesigns in the model's history.
Numerous publications have speculated that the next Corvette will drop the front-engine layout used since the model's inception for a mid-engine design.

GM has toyed with this idea as far back as the 1960s, building many mid-engine Corvette prototypes and concept cars but never committing to production.
In addition, the plug-in hybrid powertrain could enable another production Corvette first: all-wheel drive.
That would be enabled by an electric motor mounted to the front axle, augmenting the traditional rear-wheel drive internal-combustion setup, Lutz speculates.

While it doesn't have quite as long a history, the idea of a hybrid or plug-in hybrid Corvette has been discussed before.
Back in 2013, GM president Mark Reuss called a hybrid Corvette a "very attractive idea," noting that such a car could compete with anticipated high-performance hybrid models from other manufacturers.

Since Reuss made that comment, Acura launched the hybrid 2017 NSX supercar, and Nissan has discussed using a hybrid powertrain in the next generation of its GT-R.
Prior to that, in 2010, GM vice president of global vehicle engineering Karl-Friedrich Stracke said a hybrid Corvette was an "interesting idea."

Unlike the mid-engine Corvette, though, GM hasn't shown any hybrid prototype or concept cars to the public.
All electrified Corvettes so far have been of the homebrew variety.
One notable example is the all-electric GXE, built by a startup called Genovation.
The 700-horsepower Corvette recently achieved a land-speed record for street-legal electric cars, reaching 205.6 mph on a Florida track.

GM Actually Considering A Hybrid Corvette?

It’s been just over a year since the 2014 Corvette Stingray debuted, and GM is already hard at work on the next generaton of Corvettes. In a recent interview, GM product chief Mark Reuss wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a hybrid Corvette in response to competitors and MPG mandates.
While Reuss wouldn’t rule out either a hybrid or electric Corvette for the next generation, I think the jump to a full-on battery electric ‘Vette is too dramatic a shift from the status quo. Corvette buyers love their big V8s, and big V8s are likely to remain the staple of the Corvette lineup for years to come. GM has actually managed to deliver as much as 29 MPG in the 2014 Corvette thanks to features like an aluminum frame and cylinder deactivation. 30 MPG in a 450 horsepower sports car is all but unheard of…but it won’t be enough.
Eventually, even cars like the Corvette will have to contribute to the 54.5 MPG CAFE fleet average automakers have to meet. That could necessitate a plug-in hybrid drivetrain similar to the BMW i8 to meet MPG mandates. The i8 uses a pair of electric motors and three-cylinder range extender to provide ample motivation and 94 MPGe thanks to a 21-mile electric driving range. A similar setup could see a hybrid Corvette with that big V8 still driving the rear wheels, but a small battery and electric motor to improve efficiency in around town driving, resulting in a huge jump on gas mileage. I mean, who would complain about a 400 HP Corvette that delivers 50+ MPG? Not this guy.
If it seems like a far-fetched idea, well frankly, it is, at least right now. An all-new Corvette is at least eight years out, and even though new fuel economy mandates are pushing for more hybrids and electrics, there’s still room for one more generation of V8-powered sports cars. A variety of factors could affect the urgency GM feels in bringing a greener ‘Vette to dealerships, and it’s still too far out to say which way we could go. GM even teased the idea of a hybrid sports car in the 2009 Corvette Stingray Concept nicknamed Sideswipe for the Transformers movies, but
Eventually though, a hybrid Corvette makes a lot of sense, especially if GM wants to lure in younger buyers. I love the look of the new Corvette Stingray, but it still reeks of “old man car” when you get right down to it. Independent shops have tried bringing the Corvette’s drivetrain into the 21st century, but now GM seems to be on board too.
There are those people who think the only way to go fast is with a big engine, but those people are becoming the exception, rather than the rule. Hybrid and electric drivetrains are the future, even for a car like the mighty Corvette, and I for one can’t wait for a hybrid version to hit dealerships.
