Chevrolet Shows Off Its Chunky Colorado ZH2 Fuel Cell Truck

The US Army is always on the alert for new technology that will help it accomplish its mission. Often in today’s world, small detachments of troops are required to operate independently far from established bases. Many such areas have no electricity and no water available. Vehicles with internal combustion engines also have two noticeable drawbacks. They are noisy and they make a lot of excess heat. Both make it difficult for Army teams to move about undetected by the enemy.

Working with the U.S. Army Automotive Research, Development, and Engineering Center, Chevrolet has built a heavily modified Colorado pickup called the ZH2 that will soon undergo field testing. Looking like a younger, beefier brother to the the venerable HUMVEE, the Colorado ZH2 features a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain that offers several advantages in military use. The testing will focus on “near-silent operation,” “reduced acoustic and thermal signatures,” “high wheel torque at all speeds,” “low fuel consumption across operating range,” and “water by-product for field uses.”
One characteristic of all electric vehicles is instantaneous torque at low speeds. That’s important to the Army as it looks for a vehicle that can move heavy loads over rough terrain. The fact that the powertrain is nearly silent and has a low heat signature is also important. But there are other less obvious advantages to a fuel cell powered vehicle. It can generate electricity in the field and provide troops with fresh water when none is available.
“One of the things we started testing about 10 years ago is this exportable power take-off,” explains GM Executive Director of Global Fuel Cell Activities Charlie Freese. “Whether you’re using the vehicle in a site where you have no access to plug-in power, or if you’re a camper, or if you’re in this military environment, the ability to export 25 kW continuous, or up to 50 kW at its peak, is a really great functionality that comes out of this fuel cell system.”
GM developed the Colorado ZH2 in less than a year. It has been working on fuel cell technology for more than a decade and that allowed it to convert the Colorado to fuel cell operation in record time. Internal GM preparation of the vehicle will continue into next year, at which time it will be handed over to the Army for a full year of field trials.
And here’s another possibility. With America’s mania for in your face trucks, if Chevrolet offered a civilian version of the ZH2, with or without the fuel cell powertrain, these brutalized behemoths with their 37″ wheels would fly off the lot. Just the thing for camping trips or motoring on down to Home  Depot to pick up a box of finish nails!

GM 8-Speed Automatic Transmission To See Wide Use

GM’s new 8-speed automatic transmission, known internally as 8L90, will be introduced shortly on the 2015 Corvette, giving it up to 29 MPG on the highway. But its use won’t stop there. According to IHS Automotive, as many as 200,000 8-speed transmission units may be fitted to the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks in each of the next two years.
Starting in 2016, the 8L90 will appear in the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon midsize pickups. The General’s full-size Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans will get the 8 speed garbox in 2018, followed by the Cadillac ATS and CTS models, as well as select Camaros, will also get versions of the 8L90 as well. This new transmission will help GM stretch to meet stringent fuel economy mandates in 2020.
While GM has worked hard to perfect fast shifting for the Corvette application, having an 8-speeds pays significant fuel economy dividends in any rear wheel drive application. GM global product chief Mark Reuss says that transmissions with higher numbers of gears will be “a big part of our product lineup” in the future.
IHS Automotive expects the 8-speed transmission to be superseded by a 10-speed unit that GM is developing jointly with Ford by model year 2018.

2016 Ford Ranger Spotted Testing In US, Again

The Ford Ranger was, by far, the most popular small truck in America…right up to the moment Ford killed it. Many people have loudly decried this move as a mistake, and Ford may be coming around to our way of seeing things.
For the second time in a month, the 2016 Ford Ranger has been caught testing in America, this time completely uncovered in pictures sent to Jalopnik. But that doesn’t mean a new Ranger is a sure thing for the US.
Of course, it would be a great addition to Ford’s lineup, especially if it came with the 3.2 liter diesel engine capable of towing a train locomotive. The “global Ranger” as it is colloquially called, is about 10% smaller than the best-selling Ford F150, but it is capable of much better fuel economy, sometimes even managing above 30 MPG. Of course the new aluminum body structure and 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 mean the 2015 F150 could deliver incredible fuel economy as well, but it’s still more truck than many people need, your humble writer included. A smaller, cheaper Ranger aimed at entry level truck buyers could find wider appeal in a market where fuel economy is now a primary factor when it comes to new car buying decisions.
Even if the global Ranger does come to America though, there’s no garauntee the diesel engine will come with it. More likely, we’d see an EcoBoost four-cylinder and V6 engine offered, whereas GM is bringing a four-cylinder Duramax diesel with its new compact trucks, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. Which drivetrain would buyers prefer? Until we have some official MPG numbers/confirmation on the Ranger coming to America, it’s hard to make any sort of fair comparison. At the very least though, Ford seems to be considering re-entry into the small truck market.
Count me as a fan of this move.

Here is yet another company willing to convert existing vehicles to dramatically improve fuel economy. Of all the free money issued by the US Government these days, wouldn't a subsidy for this type of conversion be appropriate? If we could convert even one third of our existing light duty truck fleet then there would be a savings of hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil daily. Indeed, VW has estimated that if one third of the US fleet was converted to diesel engines, the savings would be 1.4 million barrels per day. There are so many ways we can reduce our consumption of imported oil yet none of the solutions seems to be taking hold. The technology is here, now but the willingness and support is absent.
