2016 Toyota HiLux Compact Pickup Gets Rendered

2016 Toyota HiLux

The immortal Toyota HiLux is considered near and far to be one of the most dependable, durable compact trucks on the market today. Since its inception, it has set the bar for survivability, making it the go-to choice for third world dictators, freedom fighters, and world travelers … but, according to Toyota, the go-anywhere, un-killable HiLux hasn’t really had a place in the US market. Not until now, maybe.
That’s because the upcoming Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon twins are generating a ton of buzz, and Ford – despite demand! – is holding its European Ranger at bay to artificially pump up demand for its aluminum F150. Toyota, then, has a chance to really do something big, and this rendering of a more car-like Toyota HiLux (which recently appeared on Carscoops), might be just that. Sporting a face that incorporates Toyota’s latest corporate design language, with a Highlander / Corolla-style grille divided by horizontal chrome bars sitting above trapezoidal lower-intake, there’s nothing too radical in the dimensions of the proposed new HiLux, and that’s a good thing.
Under the hood, the next generation HiLux will most likely use a tried-and-true format of Toyota’s 4 and 6 cyl. engines (think Camry), and maybe a diesel if the new Nissan Frontier + Cummins project gains traction.
What do you guys think? Do you like what you see in this rendering? Would you like to see the a 2016 Toyota HiLux show up in Toyota’s US showrooms? Crucially, if it did- would you buy one? Watch the guys at Top Gear try to kill a current HiLux, then let us know what you think, in the comments.
