GM’s luxury brand Cadillac wants to compete with the likes of Tesla Motors, and their opening salvo in this green luxury car war comes in the form of the Chevy Volt-based Cadillac ELR. While Consumer Reports calls the Cadillac ELR overpriced, GM thinks there are enough people willing to pay the $75,995 asking price, and the first units are shipping to dealers today.
Despite receiving plenty of criticism though, the Cadillac ELR is a sportier take on the plug-in hybrid concept, an important first step for GM that could lead to even cooler hybrid concepts. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, for example, help control the regenerative braking, and the 2+2 coupe setup certainly implies more sportiness than the Volt sedan.
With 35 miles of all-electric driving range and one of the nicest interiors of any GM product, the success or failure of the flagship ELR could determine just how green Cadillac’s future looks. But Cadillac is currently without a coupe, and GM knows that Cadillac buyers will be a premium to have two fewer doors. With the ELR as their only choice, perhaps the Cadillac ELR will find a niche to fill by mistake.
I’ll tell you what though, I wouldn’t complain if Santa dropped an ELR off in my driveway for Christmas.
