Translogic has confirmed that the much-anticipated 2011 Chevrolet Volt will begin production on November 11, 2010. The official start of production (sometimes known as "Job 1" in the auto industry) finally gives consumers and dealers a clear indication of when they'll get their hands on the vehicle. People familiar with the Volt's launch activities confirmed the November date, citing the company's plans to bring forth a major media effort that may or may not line up with the company's planned IPO. According to company insiders, the start of Volt production and the company's Wall Street re-debut would be a powerful duo. Perhaps coincidentally, November 11 is also Veterans Day in the U.S.
Though the official start of Volt production has been officially slated for November 11, Chevrolet dealers receiving the car in California, Michigan and Washington D.C. won't learn how many Volts they'll get their hands on until November 17, the date the official dealer allocations are posted online.
The American automaker has poured copious resources into the development and marketing of the not-quite-electric, not-quite-hybrid green machine. Fresh out of bankruptcy and on the verge of a much-hyped IPO, the Volt has some very high expectations to meet in order for Chevrolet and GM to gain credibility as the leader in the burgeoning EV market.
Expecting favorable consumer response to the car, GM plans to build 10,000 Volts by the end of the 2011 calendar year, with another 30,000 in 2012. That means the Hamtramck plant will produce an average of about 24 Volts per day until the end of next year.
